Listing goes by original title, english title, director, country.

* = pending favorites

These films are possible personal favorites that I need to see again (and again, and again...) for reassesment. They are magnificent films with great value, but somehow they are also problematic, when it comes to naming my favorite movies - meaning I can't decide if they really are personal favorites or not. This usually depends on my mood or the circumstances, but can change over the years.
For example "Heat" (1995) and "The Thin Red Line" (1998) were such "pending" favorites over a couple of years and numerous rewatches. Now they are firmly among my 50 favorite films of all times! Other movies have fallen back into the pending "category" or disappeared forever (and may resurface in the future).

I just added a lot of titles to my 'to see' list!

Well that's nice to hear :-)
But my list is of course very subjective, and this is a good way to have an overview that can be updated.

WB, my 2004 Best Picture Nominee only includes the Pictures that were actually NOMINATED for best picture. Eternal Sunshines wasn't, in fact, nominated for Best Picture. I take it then that you thought Eternal Sunshine was the best movie of the year.

Ah, I understand. It wasn't obvious from the title you had chosen.
Yes, I think it was the best picture, but as tastes differ, I have no problem if another is chosen by the academy. But to not even nominate it...

I agree enternal sunshine deserved a technical nomination for at least Best Director, but it did win Original Screenplay. It was a fine movie, as so one many were this year, the Oscar just didn't choose. Doesn't matter. People will continue to talk, critique, analyze, and rave about it no matter what Oscar says.

Really excellent. I take it you're still working on some of the earlier years? Anyway, i'm working on an extended list too, and thanks for reminding me of some. Plenty yet to see, which is always a big plus making any list much more intriguing.

Yes, the earlier years are a problem, as I've seen too many old films too long ago, while watching too many recent films (90s, 00s)in the last 1-2 years. But I don't wanna include films only because I thought they were great more than 3 years ago, as my taste has changed ("improved" I would say ;-)).
Also I really wanted to enclude only films I found great or near-perfect (besides my favorites), so that it won't get too long. So maybe if a film is "missing", it can be that I didn't like it, or much more likely it slightly failed to make it (or I haven't seen it, yet).
So I guess I'll be working a lot on it, adding (and removing) more films in the future.
But thanks for your enthusiasm! :-)

One year-topper i've not seen is 1900. Now it only seems to be available on video + dubbed. I hate dubbed. Would it be worth risking like that, or better wait till it comes out on dvd sometime for fear of ruining it?

I myself only saw it dubbed (in German) albeit the "complete" version, and the impact stayed with me. And with this film I really don't know which could be an "original language, as Depardieu didn't speak english, de Niro didn't speak italian, and there's such a mixed cast, that I assume that there are only different dubbed versions. But if you know something else, let me know!

Oh and i'm very interested to note Second Best in your list. This was filmed in the small town where i was brought up + my dad lives. His best friend played the adoption worker- not sure how she got the part but i guess it may have been cos she had the local bookshop and the book's author was in town for the film, had a good long caht with my dad. She used to have William Hurt round for meals. Chris Menges the double Oscar-winning cinematographer turned director lives nearby. Nice guy. Another female friend told me her chest was in the film- chest of drawers that is. Now, to my shame i still haven't seen it but the subect does interest me! I only wish i'd been there during filming.

The film is about the relationship of a father and his son (though he's adopted), and it is one of the most tender and honest accounts. I love William Hurt (one of my favorite actors), the boy played also good. Don't think I remember the adoption worker , though. But the female lead was also interesting (I think Jane Horrocks), as how she played into the relationship of the two protagonists.
Too bad you haven't seen it yet, it's a beautiful film I'm sure you'd enjoy (and also a great choice for your "Recommended films about family separation" -thread).
I can't believed this was filmed in your neighborhood, as the landscapes and town were imo really beautiful. And you missed the filming? I remember how I hated myself for missing a filming in Slovenia in my neighborhood when I was a child (and the film even was about my family!), but I was only a child then, not yet into films.
But it sure must have been something to talk for a while. Well, if you bump into Menges' the next time, you can tell him a film enthusiast from germany immensly enjoyed his film ;-)
I hope he'll direct more in the future, but even if he ´"only" works as a cinematographer he's imo one of the best in the world ("The Mission" just like, made me kneel down).

The adoption worker Doris Irving is quite a well-built woman with grey hair, was in her 50's then. Yeah the town (Knighton) and area i was brought up in are certainly very pretty. Great for walking. It's half way up/down the England-Wales border, on Offa's Dyke, the ancient earthworks built by the English to keep out the Welsh, and known as the town on the dyke, Tref y Clawdd in Welsh.

Oh and part of Howard's End was filmed near Knighton, just the English side of the border. But it's not a very well-known area; not many big towns or tourist attractions (apart from the countryside).

I'm glad too see oyur a fan of The Pallbearer. its such a great dark comedy. all the performances are played with such comic insecurity, its great! its in My Top 20. your views on the film?

I saw it by chance once, and I thought it was a really great coming-of-age film, with the right amount of drama and laughter. I even think it's superior to such a classic as The Graduate.
Normally I wouldn't have checked it out, so I'm really glad :-)

yes i agree with your comments. i fully agree on it being better than The Graduate.

Disney's Robin Hood and Zabriskie Point the films of the year! That must be a unique double!

Yeah I know, that's really something :-)))
But lucky me I'm no filmcritic, just a guy posting on the internet, and don't have to justify everything before the world ;-)

You'll be pleased to know i've just added Avalon, Beijing Bicycle and Das Experiment to my rental list. I'd intended to see them at some point, but hadn't realised they were quite so essential! Oh and can you say something about Sky Plane Girl (the title reminds of Dog Star Man).

Sky Plane Girl is the debut film by russian director Vera Storozheva, and is based on the play "104 pages on love" by Edward Radzinsky.
The film deals with a relationship between a man and a stewardess, with the stewardess being the main protagonist. She always seems very happy, and somehow all men fall for her, but this is only attitude, as she's lonely and wants a real relationship based on love and trust, and not on ownership. Film takes place in today's russia, but has a somehow surreal touch that I can't explain. The acting of the main character would normally be considered "bad" and unrealistic, but is in fact perfect for the whole mood of the film. I think it deals with "artificial" vs. "real" , but it's hard to explain. Just see it, if you ever get the chance.
Played on some festivals, and was nominated for some Nika (russian "oscar") awards.

I don't consider Das Experiment essential, it's just one of my favorite films. A psychological Thriller by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall), with a great young german actor Moritz Bleibtreu (known maybe from run lola run) as the main character. It is the most exciting film I've ever seen, but what makes it memorable imo, is the intercutting of the plot in the "prison" with the girl who's waiting for the protagonist outside. The ending is one of my favorite ending scenes. Many viewers complained abou the "love" thing in the film, that didn't seem to fit in, but I think it is essential, and without it the movie would have been very different, and not as good.
But watch it for yourself if you're interested.
It's something of a german blockbuster with brains.
Avalon and Beijing Bicycle are imo essential.

Excluded Godfather Part II after watching it again yesterday. A very good film about silence, I liked it, but it wasn't as great as it seemed to me a few years ago. Robert De Niro was remarkable, though.
I've rated it a very good *** / ****

After watching the first two parts, I'll watch the third this week. I haven't seen it yet, so I can finally decide which part of the trilogy is the best :-)
Part I is now slightly in the lead.

After having watched the three godfathers, I think the first is best, the third is "worst", though there are two great things about it. Best Al Pacino performance of all three, and Sofia Coppola (wow :-)))
But as none of the three are included in this list, let's talk about better films.

I've watched Scarface (De Palma) yesterday, and although it wasn't great (i rated it *** 1/4 / ****), I have included it , as I seem to have a soft spot for it.
Great direction by de Palma, very good Oliver Stone script, great Pacino, very good Michelle Pfeiffer, and a perfect 80s film.
Almost everything I love and hate about the 80s in the US is here.
I am hungry for more Brian de Palma!!

3 new films were included:

Pather Panchali (1955 / Satyajit Ray / India)
La Derive (1964 / Paula Delsol / France)
Eat (2001 / Bill Plympton / USA)

No Taxi Driver for 1976?
No Lawrence of Arabia for 1962?

Oh, and Salò..., what like?

Wow, no verbs...

Oh, Taxi Driver I should probably include under "need to see again".
I liked it when I saw it 4 years ago, but four years is a long time, and my memory of it isn't accurate enough.

Lawrence of Arabia was listed from the start. Look Again :-)

Watched Salo in the cinema, and I thought it was a great film.
It's about power, hierarchys, fascism, etc.
Like a bitter outcry against a rotten world.
Very drastic in some scenes, but I found it to be honest and sometimes "beautiful" in its sadness. The ending with two boys dancing is one of the best and maybe the most horrible I've ever seen. Imo an important film.
Still my favorite Pasolini (out of 5 I've seen).

"Lawrence of Arabia was listed from the start. Look Again :-)" --> I need this.

Or a clean PC-screen ;-)

Oh, I had nearly overseen your answer now... hmmm, I should really try to get off these pieces of pizza and hamburger on my screen :D

With me it's more the problem that my fingers keep sticking to the keyboard.
Caaaaaaaannnnnnnnn''''t tyyyypppppppppew anyyyyymmmmmmmmmmmmmspdfkasfl............

Saw Deconstructing Harry for the second time in my life, and while I still think it's a very good film, it isn't one of my favorites anymore.
I rated it *** 1/4 / ****, and it dropped from being a favorite on 7. to 19.

Saw Spirited away for the second time, and "finally" understood it completely.
A very good film, though far too complicated for children imo...
I rated it *** 1/2 / **** and include it in this list.

Saw Punch-Drunk Love, and it was great.
Rated it *** 1/2 / ****, and it's ranked 19th on the list of 2002 films.

Some editing was done, and many films are missing. Most will return to the list after a few weeks, but some I just need to see again, as it has been too many years for a proper evaluation.

Are the special asterisks new? I love the new formatting. Thank you.

Yes, they are new, and the list is despite ongoing restructuring quite complete now.
Great that you like it, and thanks for checking in. I thought nobody was reading this ;-)

Check out the Untold Story and Cannibal Holocaust.

I've seen Cannibal Holocaust, and though I liked it, it isn't one of my favorites. I know, I need to see Untold Story. Anthony Wong is in my opinion one of the best actors around.

Wow, I'm shocked, most so called film buffs either won't touch them or have never heard of them. You are a true film buff.

The Untold Story is really good, and is supposed to be Wong's best to date.

I can think of few things more terrifying than Anthony Wong in The Untold Story. For the flipside of that, give a look-see to his loopy, hammy sneering in Ebola Syndrome.

I was disappointed by Ebola Syndrome, and I don't know why.

More Wong is always appreciated, but I heard only "funny" things about Ebola Syndrome...

Most recent entry to my elusive favorites listing has been gained by Michael Powell's masterful Peeping Tom (1960). I doubt that Karl-Heinz Böhm was ever better. A must-see for all voyeurs :-D

Thanks. The film buffs I hang around with all appreciate Cannibal Holocaust, so it's mandatory viewing. Cannibal ferox on the other hand is a whole different story ;-)

Very original taste! I'll definitely give you that! Please take a look at my "Best Film Of Every Year" and "Every Film Ive Ever Seen". We dont have the exact same taste, but I see a few similarities. There are quite a few of yours that I might be checking out

I had a bunch of these films on video tapes but I gave them all away when I moved house. To move the furniture and all the other things from a house to another, I hired the heavy equipment movers California company. The only problem was that all those video tapes were taking too much space and I didn't want to hire more than one car, so gave them to a charity shop. There was around 300 tapes!

Fucking Spammer!!!

Why can't I delete shitty posts like these!!?
