Another suggestion on the black metal front, the new one by Heresi. Only 5 songs, but damn it's good. Disappointed to see you rank Vreid so low, since I was thinking of getting that one. I recently heard a couple songs and was considering getting it on the strength of those. I guess I kind of like the whole black metal mixed with rock sound, most likely cause it's something I haven't heard much of outside of recent Satyricon.

Dude, I'm green with envy about you seeing the Host. I wonder if it'll make it to a theater in Seattle or if I'll have to rent a Korean DVD at Scarecrow. I should've made plans to go to VIFF (after talking about it back in May/June).

B+ for Beerfest? I can't wait to see your review. The preview I saw made it look like a lame National Lampoon movie, so I had no plans to check it out even though I love beer almost as much as life itself.

Dude, you might wanna scope this list out a bit. I was looking to put up a couple of these on the Hellbox music thing as payback for you offering up Mr. Lif and The Proposition. I noticed that Lair of the Minotaur is also on the list of what's on your CD rack. I think there was another one too, but I can't remember what it was.

Well, you only went down to a C with your grade. I know it was a bad movie and I might be giving it higher than it deserves. It was tremendously stupid and only moderately entertaining. If I'd seen it at home, it' might've been a C-.

Hey, I have a sort of admiration for the kind of masochism you showed in your Uwe Boll marathon. That took guts, my friend.

I figure life is short, so I better watch all the classics while I still can. It took me many years, but I've successfully rid myself of any compulsion to watch new Hollywood stuff (although Carlson's review of Lady in the Water almost got me to the theater to see that). I'm still susceptible to schlock, but I figure if I'm going to give in to that, I'll go the Hammer route or watch some giallos or something.

Got a couple you might wanna look for:

Striborg (one man black metal a la Leviathan, but this dude lives in a shack in the Tasmanian rain forest. Tasmanian rain forest black metal, really bizarre mix of weird ambient synth stuff and the whole horde of bees guitar sound and inhuman vocals).

Nachtmystium (black metal from Wheaton, IL on a label called Battle Kommand. They have a new record out called Instinct=Decay that's pretty good).

Nope. Scarecrow on VHS. Which, really, wasn't any worse than seeing it on TV. Unfortunately, my DVD player can do all regions but not PAL or I could see Fixed Bayonets and Hell & High Water on the same DVD.

Wow...you must've been drinking heavily during Izo to make it through all 2 hrs of it. I love Miike and I bailed after the first hour.

I was worried about the rotoscoping too, but was pleasantly surprised. It annoyed me a little in Waking Life, the jello-y shaky kind of quality to it. Here it works well with the story and it seems like they've improved the technique. The performances of the actors are able to come through pretty well (especially Downey).

Yeah, it was a B- when I got home from the theater yesterday but I can't stop thinking about it. Parts of it just have more weight and importance than I'd initially realized. More than anything, I really want to read the book now.

Picked up Terrorizer magazine and they have a CD sampler that comes with it. Heard "Wound Upon Wound" off the Gorgoroth record and was pretty blown away. Is the rest of the record in that vein or is there more variety to the sound? I heard it's like 8 songs and around 30 minutes. Pretty short songs for a black metal record but I like that. Also, have you heard the new Celtic Frost?

Wow, it looks like you ended the festival on a wave of mediocrity after The Unknown, which must've been something. I wish I'd gone to that. I ended it on a pretty good note. A lot of solid films, although nothing mind-blowing. Hard to believe it's over.

Just about every shot in the Red Shoes was amazing even on my small screen at home. I really hope I get a chance to see it in a theater some day. I think I'd go see most if not all of the Powells I've seen on DVD on the big screen if given the opportunity.
