Wow, you hated the Striborg pretty hard. I like it much more than the Xasthur record which had a couple amazing songs and a bunch of stuff that just did absolutely nothing for me. The wildly different subjective reactions that black metal fans seem to have for certain records is really interesting to me cause I also like the Antaeus record a lot and couldn't get into Summoning (admittedly not really a black metal record at all) yet we have some common ground in stuff like I and Agalloch.
It's funny that when I've made recommendations to you in the past about things, you've not liked them. I can usually peg my friends indie rock and punk tastes and recommend stuff I know they'll like. With metal, it's like a roll of the dice even when it's people with whom I seem to have somewhat similar tastes. Sorry if I steered you toward some stuff you hated, man.
I don't know if you can get it where you are, but I tried an American Belgian-style beer tonight that was incredible. It's the Avery Reverend, a quadrupel...and holy crap is it good. It's also an ass-kicker at 10% ABV so beware.
Ah...a fellow beer lover. I see you like the Belgians a bit. I need to learn more about them this year. I've got a good handle on the American belgian-style beers, now I need to go back to the source.
Yeah, it's surprising the number of classic films I've not seen. I'm working my way through the Altmans now and there's plenty I've missed. 3 Women and A Wedding are on deck.
Who knows, you might give it a 45 and think I'm the one on something...crack. But I highly doubt it.
Next time I'm in your neck of the woods (given my beer adventures it won't be long), I'll bring you The Host if you want to see it and haven't yet secured a copy.
Holy crap, dude. Dogfish Head World Wide Stout. 19% ABV. Just split one with my lady. $9 for a 12oz. but you've gotta try it. Don't know how they make it drinkable at that alcohol level, but they do.
The first time I listened to Live a Little, I was underwhelmed. Then, hearing the songs one by one when doing the shuffle the iPod thing, the excellence of the individual songs fell into place. Maybe they work better individually(especially "B.S. Johnson" and "Somerville") rather than as a cohesive album. It almost seems like they're going for a sound and feel similar to World Won't End, which may be their best.
Sweet that you got the Vertical. I remember how much you wanted it. I haven't seen any of it left here in Seattle.
I'm hearing bad things about the Double Bastard. It's making me want to open my bottle and see what's up. Finally had the Brown Shugga' last night. Had it as my second beer of the night...bad idea. It kicked my ass and made me want to crash out at 9pm. The sweetness makes you forget the alcohol content. I wasn't as wild about it as you are, but it was interesting enough that I'll try it again.
If you make it to Seattle next year, I found a place I'll have to take you: The Stumbling Monk. 10 taps...5 Belgians and 5 North American Microbrews in the belgian style. I had the North Coast Brother Thelonius Abbey Brown last night and will be going back for the Unibroue Chambly Noire tonight. When you order something the bartender thinks is really good, he gets all happy. Cool place.
I want to get a list like this going, but the amount of music I've heard and/or bought this year is staggering. So many great records, especially in terms of metal. I need to post the new Ludicra record on that Hellbox thing so you can hear it. Just picked up Destroyer's Rubies at the library so I can hear what all the fuss is about. Everyone seems to love that record.
Butternuts Porkslap, eh? And in cans too. I take it that's a NY brewer?
Have you seen the 2006 Double Bastard over there yet? It just hit here a couple days ago. I don't think I'll be "cellaring" mine, though. Probably give it a go one night this week. 10% ABV so I might be asleep early that night.
The End records is having a big Halloween sale and a couple Windir records are available for around $10. Between Likferd and Soknardalr can you recommend one?

I'm in again. Thanks for continuing to maintain this list!

You did it! I hope they gave you a button that says "I Survived Satantango at the NW Film Forum" or something like that.
