If anybody has any suggestions for some winners that I havent thought of for any of the years where I only have a couple listed (or any list with less than 10), please let me know. Obviously, keep the rest of my choices in mind with your suggestions.
Cloned From:

In the case of some of those earlier "cricket-whistling" decades -- the '30s and '40s particularly -- have you not seen many films from that period, or do you simply dislike most of the films that were common at that time, particularly those from the Hollywood studio system? I love your director/canon list, but I was noticing that many of the 30s/40s-friendly directors that immediately leap to mind aren't there---Hawks, Ford, Capra, Cukor, Lubitsch, Ophuls, Preminger, Stevens, Billy Wilder, Wyler, etc. (I see Lang, but it looks like you were hanging around some of his earlier work.) Are they a territory you have yet to explore, or are these films that just don't work for you? (If you've experienced a good bit of their work and don't care for them, fair enough, but if you simply haven't gotten around to them yet, I have a list longer than my arm...)
This won't help your 30s/40s quest much, but given some of your other early "likes," I'd recommend Murnau...Faust, Sunrise, Nosferatu, The Last Laugh...everything!
For 1961...Yojimbo! Given some of your other picks, I'd think it would fit right in. La Notte? The Japanese and Italians help me round out a lot of the 50s and 60s. :-) I finally saw The Hustler (1961) recently, and I suspect that even folks who don't generally like "studio pictures" would embrace it...it was great.
Iiiits the studio films. I just cant stand the formulaic Hollywood films of the 40s and 50s. The stilted acting, the blocking, the ABC formula, the dialogue, the not-very-interesting plots, etc. Exceptions are Ray Milland, most stuff by Hitch, and *some* film noir (which I really havent seen enough of to place). Ive actually got TONS of stuff from the 20s and 30s that are on my Netflix queue, but not a whole lot from the 40s and 50s. Of your string of directors, I did enjoy The Collector by Wyler and The Lost Weekend by Wilder, but the rest Ive looked into and didnt like. I am trying my damndest to come up with as many foreign 40s and 50s as possible actually. The US just wasnt cutting it back then.
Ive thought about Kurosawa, but I couldnt get through The Bad Sleep Well...dunno if thats considered one of his better ones or not...
As for your La Notte suggestion, Ive just never liked Italian films. I am going to be exploring more Fellini sooner than later though. Ive only seen 8 1/2 and Satyricon and I didnt care much for Satyricon. Nights Of The Cabiria is probably going to be my next attempt. If that doesnt pan out, Ill probably just give up on Fellini altogether. Other than that, Ive liked what Ive seen from Elio Petri so far, but virtually none of his films are available so Im stuck there...
Thanks for the post! I do hope youll leave one on my canon list. Ill be checking out your stuff as well.
EDIT: Mentioning Ray Milland reminded me of a film that I forgot to add...and it will replace the crickets for '44 :). I went off my extensive vote history for this, but there are definitely films that slipped through the cracks.
No, we don't have similar tastes, but there are some striking resemblancies! :-)
Checked out your best of list. Looks like you still have a lot to see, though I like some of your selections (especially pre 2000). All the movies you've ever seen, you list about 1500 films. Not bad! (I'm at ca. 4500). But again, you seem to have seen a lot from the last ten years, and little before that. I'm sure that will change in the future, and I'm very glad you took some inspiration from my list. :-D
Well there are so many films that I desperately WANT to see and HAVE wanted to see for years! Ive had the same core films on my wantlist for years now and most of them are out of print/never been in print. The Traveling Executioner is one of the major ones! I dont go for age necessarily; if a film strikes my fancy, Im going to watch it regardless if its old new, silent, foreign, whatever. On my director canon list you will see some directors where Ive seen a film or two which Ive rated highly and the rest is non-highlighted AND doesnt state that its on my queue. You can bet in all those cases, those are the films that just arent available to see. Check out these links to give you a better idea (sorry, I cant seem to make them clickable -- all the common tricks I know dont seem to work):
http://imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=21223467
http://imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=33924623
http://imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=21224078
^Those are all the ones (so far) that in some way or another just ARENT available.
Here is my main available want list and my coming soon list:
http://imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=10469979
http://imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=11429205
^those plus the 500 that are on my Netflix Q and the ones from my director canon list that I failed to add to My Movies accounts for pretty much every film that I want to see.
The problem I run into is that there arent a whole lot of American films that I care to see within the '30s-'60s because I hate studio films. Most are foreign and as such, harder to find. And, I have seen more than 1600 but there is no way I can possibly remember every film Ive ever seen; I think of a few random ones most every day.
Let me know what you think of those films I linked you to! Thanks!
