TREAT OF THE WEEK - No. 9

MAGAZINE
Easily one of the best bands from the late seventies/early eighties, but hugely under-rated and largely unremembered. Fantastic musicians, widely admired guitarist (John McGeogh - RIP), with a superbly original frontman, Howard Devoto, later cloned by Thom Yorke and Radiohead. The Light Pours Out Of Me Touch and Go Permafrost Burst Definitive Gaze Give Me Everything Motorcade
Howard Devoto was the original frontman for The Buzzcocks, and this showed in the first two or three 7" singles from Magazine, because they sounded very much like a polished (early) Buzzcocks, but by the time they recorded their first album (Real Life) they had developed their own sound. Pete Shelley co-wrote 'The Light Pours Out Of Me' with Devoto and McGeogh. Devoto sung on the Buzzcocks very first record release, their essential EP 'Spiral Scratch'. &nbsp After Magazine, Devoto went on to form Luxuria with Noko. Magazine have been quoted as influences by Radiohead, Morrisey, and Coldplay.

Guitarist John McGeogh went on to join Souixie and the Banshees (see treat no. 21), and later joined John Lydon and PIL, but tragically died in his sleep in 2004 at the age of 48. McGeoch has been cited by many artists as a major influence. These include U2, The Strokes, The Rapture, John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and James Dean Bradfield of the Manic Street Preachers. Bassist Barry Adamson later joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and has released a number of solo albums. Keyboard player Dave Formula is now with Angel Brothers. Devoto and Shelley later collaborated again on their joint album 'Buzzkunst'. McGeoch, Formula and Adamson were regular members, with Midge Ure (Ultravox), in the popular band Visage.
The first two Magazine albums were momentous post-punk landmarks:

Real Life - essential tracks: My Tulpa, Shot By Both Sides, Motorcade, The Light Pours Out Of Me.

Secondhand Daylight - essential tracks: Rhythm Of Cruelty, I Wanted Your Heart, Permafrost.

Cloned From:

"later cloned by Thom Yorke and Radiohead."

In what way?

Here's another version of The Light Pours Out Of Me, unfortunately missing the great guitar work of John McGeogh, but a good example of Devoto at his best (not to forget bassist Barry Adamson). Cloned is perhaps the wrong expression. An inspiration to them would be a better description, no shame because Magazine are one of the true greats.
