AMY WINEHOUSE.
Possessing a jazz background, and with soul and blues influences, she has been compared to Billy Holliday, Dinah Washington, and Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2007 Brit award for best female solo singer, but unlike some Brit winners who arrive in the blink of an eye and fade nearly as quickly, I think her voice and style could keep her at the top for many years.

Another young lady who has made a big impact in Britain in the last 12 months, is LILY ALLEN, also nominated for a Brit award as the best female solo singer but lost out to Amy Winehouse. Clearly, she is altogether in a different league to Amy Winehouse, but I include here an example of her work because it might be worthy of noting her recent popularity within British popular music. She is a young and delightfully original composer with the sweetest of voices, although she won't be to everyone's taste. Her father is the British comedy actor Keith Allen (The Comic Strip Presents ... )
