So, how do you like the new format? Hopefully I'll be able to get the 1970s-now list done before I leave tomorrow for my road trip.

Much better!

Thanks. But now it shows even more effectively how few films I've seen :-)

Not Seen "Midnight cowboy" or "Easy Rider?"

there both strong and great movies, i strongly suggest you see

Yup, both on my 'to see' list, along with 1000 others :-(

And i thought you were the man who had seen them all :-)
lol..i beat you on those 2! hhehe, but yes they are great!

Oh, no, far from it. I've got a LONG way to go! There's just not enough time in the world...

Lol, Jim, I picked up the pace again over the last several weeks and I've ALREADY seen 1500 feature length films, or very close. Just a bit sooner than expected, haha. But you were right. Maybe I should've asked if I could hit TWO THOUSAND before year's end, lol.

BTW, I just added it up and I think I've seen 1406 feature-length films (on this list). I wondered earlier if I could hit 1500 before the year's end. We'll see, as I've drastically reduced my pace. Jim has faith in me, though :-)

Guess I was wrong before. At this moment, I now have seen 1410 feature-length films (that I can remember). Wheeee... counting is fun, kids!

Wow, just today I remembered 7 seperate films I've seen that hadn't made it onto the list yet!

Was midnight cowboy in those 7? anyway i ask again..what did you think of midnight cowboy?

No, it was one I got from Netflix. I thought it was really good (MUCH better than Easy Rider, from the same year, which I also just recently watched). I think it's hilarious that the film got an NC-17 rating (though it was later dropped to an R), especially comparing it to many of today's modern R-rated movies.

I was also surprised to see Jon Voight look so young and non-Christopher-Walken-looking. I think it's the strength of Rizzo and Joe (as characters and performances) that really carry the film past any difficulties it might have.

Have you seen "If..." (1968) or "Performance" (1970) yet?

Never even heard of them. Would you recommend them?

Yes, I would recomend them, but only if you like weird stuff, and are very open minded. "If..." is about British school boys who start a small revolution, and it's very surreal, and was given an X rating when it was released. Now, I doubt it would get a PG-13, but back then, it was considered very shocking and radical. It's numer 12 on the British Film Institute's 100 Best List, and I don't think the movie has aged a day.
"Performance" is a very trippy and decadent movie about crime and rock and roll, and it shocked Warner Brothers so much that refused to realease it for 4 years. The visual style and editing on that movie are amazing, and I think the movie is still ahead of its time. It reminds me of Quentin Taratino's "Pulp Fiction".

Both of them sound great! I'll add them to my list.

Um, who are you talking to in these last two posts, lukeprog?

What the?

Dude, that's creepy.

Jim, your site is haunted by a ghost.

I got message response notifications for someone suggesting "If..." and "Performance" - he told me what they were like, I said they sounded cool. But, apprently the links in the email to reply led to the wrong place...

Oh, maybe they haven't passed moderation yet. That's usually the explanation for this sort of thing.

BTW, lukeprog, I haven't heard of If..., but I have heard of Performance, which is directed by Nicolas Roeg. Have you seen any Roeg films? He might be an acquired taste (read: loved by those who love pretentious, confusing, often boring films). I've only seen Don't Look Now from him, but I found it pretty disappointing. Great cinematography though (Roeg was a cinematographer originally, and I believe he was the cinematographer for this movie), and one of the best sex scenes in any mainstream (read: non-porn) film.

Well, time for me to go to sleep (read: porn).

hahaha. Well-executed, my friend.

Don't Look Now is on my to-see list. How do you feel about Godard films? Still haven't seen any of his yet, but I hear he's also loved by those who love pretentious, confusing, often boring films.

I have only seen Breathless, but really loved it. I think the pretension, confusion, and boredom comes from some of his later work.

Goddard? Didn't he do Alphaville? Because I thought that was a very playful movie, not at all boring or pretensious. Nicolas Roeg is an aquired taste by the way......

He's made a few films, but I've heard that almost everything he's made in the last 20 years is pretty boring and pretentious. I wouldn't know first-hand, though.

Well then I'll stay away from his new stuff.....

Well, that's just what I remember reading somewhere. Could be wrong.

Yes, but only if you are really open minded, and don't freak out easily. They are both on the British Film Institute's Best Ever List.

Jim, could you tell me why updates of this list are always layered in a diagonal line in Recent Activity?

I was wondering that as well.

Yes, this is a big pain. Recent Activity only shows new or deleted lines, but since lukeprog has HTML formatting in there, his opening tags are often showing up, but not the closing tags (presumably because he's editing the lines with the opening tag in it, but not editing the lines with the closing tag). That's my guess, anyway. Does it sound feasible?

Incidentally, a good way to work around this might be to save your list again, with only one unformatted line changed. That will make only that thing show up, so folks will know something is new, but it won't push reams of content to "Recent Activity" (even looking at the list itself is a mess with "highlighting" on - if you look now you'll see all that "deleted" content is a big diagonal mess at the moment). Of course, that's just a hack until/unless I can think of something better.

I've been thinking about something anyway. I don't really think there's a need for this list to appear on Recent Updates page (I'll just tick the checkbox when updating), as it's more of a reference than a 'news' item. New additions are in the 'Movies Seen Recently' list, except for movies that I don't watch again but suddenly remember I have seen, which are becoming fewer and farther between.

There, what do you think of that? Here's what I think:

1. No need scroll the 'main' page to get down to discussion.
2. List hosted off-site, so little Listology bandwidth used (right?).
3. No formatting problems.
4. Won't appear in recent updates (as I intended). Also, can't highlight changes.
5. Moving the list offsite will probably drop me an entire star rating :-)

What do YOU think?

Not too shabby. It won't show up in Listology searches either though. There are pros and cons. I do wish the IFRAME were a touch narrower.

Ah yes, won't show up in searches.

Hmmm...

Yeah, I dunno.

I have the width at 95%, so if your browser window is smaller, the iframe will squish with it. Otherwise, it'll be as wide as it can get (just like the text above it). If I set it to a fixed width, it doesn't align with the text above it at all.

Doesn't quite squish on Firebird, but it's not a biggie.

How's that?

Better, thanks.

You just have to save it one more time to keep the "deleted" one from showing up when highlighting is on.

I haven't figured out yet whether or not this is better than just making it one list WITHOUT an iframe and never sending it to the 'recent updates' page.

Grrrrr... I don't like that it won't turn up in searches, so I've put it back to 'normal.' I just won't send it to the recent updates page. I've replaced "[short]" with "*" to temporarily postpone running into the characters limit (I went over the limit when I tried to save the list without making that change).

i watched about 1hour of "Brazil (1985)" and thought it was about the strangest and most crazy movie ive ever seen. what was going on in that film? crazy, i'll have to watch it in full.

I think there are several moments in a lifelong filmlovers experience where you inevitably watch something you can't handle, something so different from anything you've seen before that you don't understand it, don't know what to think of it, and (because of the first two) don't like it.

This happened to me most recently with Metropolis (1927), which I watched about a year ago. It was the first silent movie I'd ever seen (except for a highly accessible Buster Keaton short: Cops). Not only was it silent, but it was a highly progressive film, stylistically and story/genre-wise. I simply couldn't handle it. It intrigued me (wow - there are whole types of films that I never knew existed), but I had a hard time enjoying and understanding it (it didn't help that a quarter of the film was lost forever).

The same thing happened to me much earlier, perhaps 5 years ago, when I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey. I recently re-watched the film, having developed a broader and more complex filmic history and experience, and I loved it, because I could now understand and appreciate it.

My advice to you is to continue watching films that challenge you, and then rewatch them later - you will find yourself better able to appreciate them. If you are scared away from more challenging cinema, you will miss out on hundreds of the best films ever made. Some you may always respect more than you enjoy, but many you will have a blast with once you are more able to stomach them.

I wish I could tell you that Brazil makes more sense when you watch the whole thing, but that's not necessarily the case.

I realize that I didn't answer the question you asked, but I think what I've discussed above may actually be more helpful. Feel free to reply with your own thoughts, or to insist that I explain to you, in detail, what Brazil is about.

Then, go watch Metropolis and 2001: A Space Odyssey. :-)

yes, i'll have to give it another watch.
but one thing you mentioned did alarm me. please dont think that i dont like (Can't Handle) complex, different movies. i love them. some of my faves of all time are quirky, slightly off balance, strange, complex movies. i dont want to think of me as somebody who wont sit through a complex, different movie, i dont want you to think i only watch "Spider-man" "Hulk" and other summer blockbusters. (though i do enjoy them alot) not that you were saying that i do but you did say that i shouldnt be scared off by them. but i sure was in the case of "brazil". i'll do what you mentioned, i'll watch it over again and then a couple of years later i'll watch it once more and see if i understand it more so.

I Haven't Seen "Space 2001" but will now.
thakyou for your reply it was very helpful and in depth. i think your right it is always good to see different style movies, but i think also that it is important to actually want to see it and not just because everyone else is. Then again my theory can easily be wrong. i watched donnie darko because of people telling me how amazing it was and its one of my favourite movies of all time, so there ive already wrong my theory!! lol

your right i will carry on watching challenging movies but please dont think that i dont already :-) its just "Brazil" was in another world!! it was CrAzy!! (Capital A to show how Crazy and how much it made no sense!!)

Thankyou very much for your advice. bb mate

Oh, I wasn't saying you don't watch 'complex, challenging' movies in a generic sense. My friends were bored to death by Taxi Driver, for crying out loud. What I was saying that there's always something that will be challenging for any moviegoer. For you at this point, it might be Brazil. For me one year ago, it was Metropolis. For probably both of us, the Godard films of the last decade. So, I wasn't not talking about films that are 'challenging' in a static sense.

lol sorry if my comment seemed abit strong, just didnt want you to think that i gave up on it just because it was slighly different.

well its on again next week (its on skymovies channels) so i'll check it out for sure. you are right about there being a challenging movie to watch for everyone though. dang right!
it all comes down to what you like and what you dont like, i guess. i mean i did like the look of the movie and it was really funny. just couldnt quite see where it was going.

Would you recommend Metropolis then?

Bye mate!

Oh yes, I'd definitely recommend Metropolis, but not as the first silent film you'd watch. First, I'd watch:

One Week (1920) [short film]
Safety Last! (1923)
The Thief of Bagdad (1924)
The Battleship Potemkin (1925)
Nosferatu, A Symphony of Terror (1922)
Metropolis (1927)

If you watch them in that order, you should be able to 'ease' yourself into silent films. That'll be the best test of whether your like them or not, instead of letting your first full-length silent film be something like Metropolis or Greed. But I don't know... have you seen a few silent films already?

yes i saw "Nosferatu, A Symphony of Terror" in my media studies class. i thought it was good, though i didnt know it was so short.

I have always had interest in watching more silent movies. though when i was younger (i mean about 5 / 6), i think once on a sunnday afternoon there was a silent film on tv and it scared me!! lol it was the way the camera moved and the way the actor moved lol maybe i was a whimp.. i dont know!

Well, most 5-6 year olds aren't that hard to scare.

Jim, no matter how many times I add author comments to this list and save it, the author comments never appear.

Oh, I see, I'm entering it as "Teaser" because Author Comments isn't there. LOL! I never even noticed that Author Comments are not available for articles!!!

even though you said you hated the ending to Contact i see that you still hold it high in the pile. i love the movie, its one of the first ones i can really remember liking alot.

Yup, it's a really great ending right up until the ending, and I didn't have the heart to penalize it so much for that. And it's not that the ending is TERRIBLE, it's just not what I desperately wanted and anticipated throughout the movie.

ah, so what did you want?

It seemed to be building to a vast, highly intelligent race of aliens that WANTED to communicate with earth for whatever reason... so I would've liked to have ended with something... BIGGER. More spectacular. Something able to pay off the immense buildup.

i see your point and they did seem to forget about the aliens wanting to "Contact" us ;)

hi luke, just saw "pieces of April" just thought i'd recommend it, its really good. looks great. very funny and katie holmes looks Yummm (oh yeah!)

great movie.

Yeah, I think it's on my to-see list somewhere. Thanks for the tip.

And, if you want to post a 'new discussion' instead of making this thread run itself to death again the right-hand side of the screen, feel free.

UPDATE: Removed yearly counts of films because they were all off anyway and it definitely wasn't worth it to keep them correct.

Are there any movies set to come out late 2004 that you think will fill up the 4-10 spaces in your 2004 pile?

There are movies that have come already that I just haven't seen (because I see so few movies in theaters) that will certainly fill up the list. And there are several movies coming out in the coming months (that's Oscar season, aftera all) that I anticipate adding to the top 10 for the year (and then, spilling into the 'highly recommended' category). Just like for older years where I haven't seen that many films yet, the top ten spots won't be filled for 2004 until I've seen 10 movies that I 'highly recommend.'

I think IMDb recently changed The general from 1927 to 1926, so for The listies: movies., do you prefer The adventures of prince Achmed to it?
