Cloned From:

Oh man, I can't wait for The Wrestler.

It's AWESOME. I'm going to see it again for sure. Theres also a good chance i'll see Slumdog Millionaire in a preview showing on tuesday, that looks so good.

I agree with CaptMal, I am very jealous you got to see The Wrestler as well. I have to wait at least another three weeks for it to come to a theater anywhere near me. Slumdog Millionaire was absolutely incredible. At the moment it is my second favorite of 2008.

Glad you loved The Wrestler, man. It's one of the best films I've ever seen.

it really is. I was totally hooked. I'm classing it as a 2009 release as thats its release in the UK, but even if it was 2008 it would be up there in top 5. however if we're talking 2009 UK releases can't wait for slumdog, benjamin button and watchmen

I want to see The Wrestler too. Not very often I get excited about wanting to see a movie in the cinema, but I might make an effort for this one..

yeah as we were talking about, i managed to see it, its brilliant mate. gonna see a preview screening of slumdog too, gonna be good, seems an uplifting film.

Burn After Reading is way underrated.

oh yeah totally. I think just because it was so different too no country, people thought it was bad, its just as good, just a different type of film

I would go so far as to say that the Coens have never made a bad movie. The only one of theirs that I'm not really big on is The Big Lebowski, but that's certainly not bad.

In fact, I should probably try that one again...

Yes.

You should.

With me.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of my all-time favorite movies. Such a powerful experience.

Also, I seem to be one of the only people on the planet not to have liked Slumdog Millionaire...

i know right? so great. i didnt know what to expect but i was so taken by the movie. some very gruesome stuff too, such as their mother's injuries.

i'd say for me the most emotionally impactful moments include Setsuko and Seita in the playground area, when in attempt to cheer up his sister Seita does tricks on the monkey bars. the montage where we see what Setsuko did while seita was away, including acting like a ghost which was mentioned earlier in the film. the most emotionally impactfully moment i felt though was when Setsuko was burrying the firefly and she calmy says "he's in a grave now, like mom" something to that affect, wow.

I personally found slumdog to be a perfect mix of gritty, fairytale, sad, funny and beautiful direction. can't praise it enough from where i stand, rewatch it mate!

i did spoiler that post but it doesn't work it seems

My biggest problem with Slumdog was the simple construction of its narrative. We're supposed to believe that every question he's asked just so happens to relate to a crucial event in his life, and they're conveniently asked in chronological order? I understand that the themes of the film are destiny and fate, but it felt like a gimmick. I never bought into it.

Maybe it would've been okay if the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire bit had all been hallucinatory, or in his mind, or just clever surrealism. But when I was supposed to also believe that some gritty reality co-existed with the simplistic game show device...just didn't work for me.

Oh, and then there was the dancing. I really, really, really hated that, though it doesn't factor into my rating.

The spoiler invisotext isn't working for me either!

i don't mind so much that the answers happened to relate to something important in his life, but yes the chronological order thing now you bring it up is pretty stupid.

i hated the dancing at first, but as long as i think of it as a simple nod to bollywood, i don't mind it. Plus it does provide a break from some some pretty grim stuff the character had to go through, lol all he needed was a good dance.

Glad you liked Zack and Miri!

yeah, it was good. though i didn't laugh as much was i thought i might of. I had never seen a kevin smith film before though. highlights for me included justin long's cameo, any scene with craig robinson in, and a lot more smaller moments.

however i didn't really laugh that much during the bits where they make fun of the cliches of porn, because lets face it, its a pretty easy target :D plus some characters annoyed me, like the cameraman. but yes still good stuff

Ah man, the cameraman was one of the best characters! Then again, Will and I love Jeff Anderson from his work in Clerks.

I agree that Zack and Miri wasn't great, but I liked it more than you did. Better Kevin Smith movies are Clerks., Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Clerks II, all of which are loosely connected (for example, each one features Jay and Silent Bob). There's also Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but I didn't care for that one.

Oh, and then there's Mallrats, which is another piece of the "View Askewniverse" canon, and Jersey Girl, which is not. I like both, but there also exists plenty of hate for them.

yeah perhaps i would of enjoyed his character more if i had seen his work in previous Kevin Smith films.

Clerks has been on my too see list for a long while, i shall try to see it by at least the summer. Dogma also is onei want to see, Alan Rickman and Chris rock are the main reasons i'll check that one out.

I think you would love Clerks.

As CaptMal said, Jeff Anderson is the man.

So the Watchmen motion comics were that good, huh? I thought the idea sounded lame, but I keep hearing cool things about them. I should check 'em out.

i think so. It's deffo pretty off putting at first that a male voice actor does the female voices, but i found my issue with that went away. As really i mean thats how audio books are or when you read a book to yourself. Theres some moments where the lack of animation is bit annoying, but its watchmen, its not an action packed book anyway, its the story that matters. In that respect i felt many parts of the motion comic came across better than the book. It gave me a greater apprication for how well it all works together (such as the double meanings in the pirate story in relation to main watchmen narrative). The moments that are animated the best IMO are origin of Dr Man, Blake's funeral, Ror getting set up, and, possibly the best, dan's dream. Oh and another thing i remember you mentioning about the movie that bit where the fire comes out of nite owl's spaceship, and when i saw the movie i thought they added that for cheesy joke, but it was in the book ! it must of slipped my mind when watching the film.

So what happened while you were watching Munich? :-)

I was watching it as part of my film making class so it was a lot of pausing it and stopping it, so the tutor could point something out. so couldn't rate it as a piece of entertainment, but i did enjoy it. i just wasnt able to get a good grasp on the story but i did enjoy what i saw, especially the several assassination attempts, especially the phone bomb.

Ah, I see. I think a film class would frustrate me more than anything else, haha.

But yeah, I love Munich. And the phone bomb sequence is INTENSE.

I'm seeing Monsters vs. Aliens today.

oh awesome! its fantastic, very funny and very good time at the cinema

Hey man, how have you been? Haven't heard from you in a while.

hey man, all is well yourself?

Yup, been having a pretty good time of things.

Any movies you're looking forward to?

actually, theres really not. the only 2 that come to mind are Toy Story 3 and The Social Network. Even then the latter is only because fincher is in the director's chair. you ?

I basically feel the same as you. Definitely looking forward to Toy Story 3, and also The Social Network, though not just because of Fincher; Aaron Sorkin wrote it.

Of movies that are already out but have yet to play near me, I can't wait for Up in the Air, A Single Man, and A Serious Man. Luckily, those first two should be around here pretty shortly.

Oh, and I keep forgetting that Scorsese's Shutter Island got pushed back to 2010.

oh, a single man and serious man are on my too see list as well. shutter island not so much , though i like emily mortimer so might see it for her.
