Author Comments:

11th Jan 2009 Slumdog Millionaire enters in at #1 of 2009 knocking The Wrestler down to #2. Also don't expect Slumdog to move anytime soon, it will take a hell of a movie to shift it.

10. Jan 2009 Role Models enters #2 of 2009

2nd Jan. 2009 The Wrestler enters number #1 of 2009

30th Of december 2008 made the decision for 2009 to go by UK release dates only, so that means films at the end of the US release year will be classed as UK releases (example : Benjamin Button, The Wrestler, Slumdog) Which you could say is a little unfair to 2008 as that limits it, but i feel its the best option to go with. out of interest that also means that releases like Juno, No country, there will be blood and sweeney would of all been 2008 in the UK if i had changed my system earlier.

26th. Dec 2008 "Cloverfield" & "The Dark Knight" become joint #1 of 2008

10th. Dec 2008 "Cloverfield" moves from #2 to #1 on 2008 list. As much as i loved The Dark Knight, and believe me i do, i felt after 9 rewatches of cloverfield, it just had to be #1. Though cloverfield does have that moment with hud and clover which i hated, and maybe a few too perfect camera positions, that aside, i have never been so drain emotionally in a cinema before. After viewing i felt like i was walking slower, like the film had come out of the screen and punched me square in the chest. With the dark knight, there was moments of that (sequence of joker crashing party / taking out officials, "you're lucky..he's not" and the chase.) however with rewatches of dark knight, i realised how much about set pieces it is. Bank heist, Party Crash, Chase, Jail, Hospital, Boat/building, final scene in burned out building. So much so that on rewatches, i found myself bored in the moments between, i also felt the boat bit went on too long, as did moments of the hospital bit. I mean i've seen it 7 times, got it on dvd morning of release, 7 times for a 2 1/2 hour film must go to show how much i like it. However Cloverfield i feel flows better, plus i still have the reactions i mentioned on 9 rewatches. I'm still shocked, taken back and totally in to the story. The moment where rob gets a call from his mum has yet to fail to bring me welling up, at least a bit.

7th. Dec 2008 "Home Alone" moves from #2 to #1 in 1990 list

23rd Nov. 2008 "Toy Story 2" moves from #7 to #2 in 1999 list

18th Nov. 2008 "Sweet Sixteen" enters at #3 on 2002 list

3rd of Nov. - Juno goes from #10 to #1 in 2007 list. Juno was a movie that took me 3 watches to fully love, my issues with some of the too hip for its own good dialogue have gone, as has my dislike for Jason Bateman's character. Originally There Will Be Blood was top of the list. a fantastic film without a doubt. However though i was taken a back by how good it was on watching it, i have yet to watch it again. Part of me is thinking of i really loved it so much i would have watched it again. I thought while it is like 3 hrs long, but so is The Dark Knight and i've seen that 5 times now. Juno is amazingly strong in the feel good factor and Jennifer Garner is outstanding.

You favored Sweeney Todd over Juno? How interesting!!

I had read articles in 2007 stating that everyone WOULD be anticipating Sweeney Todd but SHOULD have been anticipating Juno. I personally haven't seen Juno yet, but the majority of my friends have and are obsessed I tell ya. It really turns me off from wanting to see it at all.

I saw Sweeney Todd. Wasn't as stimulating as I thought it would be but I got what I expected to see.

Well tbh, BOTH IMO were great. I'm going to see Juno again soon so all could change. With Sweeny Todd, i've been a Burton fan for ages, i really enjoy his style. I was worried about the musical aspect of it and very much disliked the subplot of the young man trying to win over Sweeny's Daughter. However, with the gruesome style of burton, some great comical moments (mainly provided by Carter, who i feel was overlooked for oscar nod and perhaps if anything depp shouldn't of got one) a brilliant cameo by Sacha Baron Cohen and Rikcman on form as ever, for me just made for a brilliant film

I guess with juno, i really liked it, in fact i gave it an A+ on first viewing. however thinking back i felt maybe i had seen this type of thing many times before. I'm all for a quirky film, i love them but i wasn't as blown away by it as others. But it could just be me worrying that i'm giving out to many A+'s ! i'll prob end up gining it that + after rewatch which should be soon. basically its so close to call between the two.

Many are raving about Ellen Page's performance which was great but for me, i also think there is a lot to be said for performances of J. K. Simmons & Allison Janney as the parents, who ground the film with a reality and heart.

Hey guy, I know I've said this before, but we've got a lot of the same taste in films. By the way, love the photos! I've really got to work/update my list. Take it easy.

thx for the comment dude, yeah i really enjoyed collecting the photos.

Well i just try to be very honest with my list, thats why you may not see many movies that are considered classics, i mean if i like them they'll go in but a lot of the time the movies i consider favourites are the ones i know i could watch 50 times and still love. Films like Batman Returns, Die Hard, Dumb & Dumber, Toy Story, Grosse Pointe i know i could watch that many times and still love.

We share favorites for 1991 T2, 1986 Aliens, 1985 Back to the future, 1978 The deer hunter, and 1975 One flew over the cuckoo's nest; tho your 1994 Dumb and dumber is my least favorite for that year...

Your list also reminded me of Rocky, which I never rated on IMDb and so forgot to list.

Shouldn't your shared #1s be followed by #3s?

well i'm a big carrey fan, so that probably accounts for Dumb & Dumber, its a childhood fave.

yeah maybe it should be followed by #3, might change that, but then wouldn't that make one of them #2? and if thats the case i may aswell just do make one of them #2

If films Foo and Bar have ratings of 90%, and film Baz a rating of 85%, then the ranking is

1 Foo/Bar
3 Baz

oh no i understand that, and realise it means for example 2008 has 11 movies in it, but its just the way i work it out, i'll probably change it.

Ghostbusters love is always a good thing.

indeed, a brilliant film.

Hey man, we have a lot of the same taste in movies. Judging by your taste in comedies I was suprised not to see "Me and You and Everyone We Know" on the 2005 list. Have you ever seen it? If not, I highly recommend it.

no i haven't seen it but i'll look into it for sure

I had a pretty good feeling that "The Dark Knight" would top your list once you got to see it. "Cloverfield" is still my top with "Mamma Mia!" in second (really a feel good time!) and "The Dark Knight" in a strong third. I'm not sure if these films will waver throughout the rest of the year. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed "The Dark Knight" and can't wait to see it again!

damn, i've become predictable! :) it was utterly fantastic! Oh i still love cloverfield, and gonna watch that again soon, for the 7th time :)

yeah i've heard mama mia is a lot of fun, does it follow the story of the stage musical or is it just them using abba songs??

Please tell me the omission of The Shawshank Redemption is some kind of sick joke.. :)

hah a sick joke, no. a simple mistake, yes!

I wasn't that keen on the film when i first saw it, mainly due to my dvd copy (a proper release not dodgy copy) was terribly grainy. I have since rewatched, this year in fact and enjoyed it a lot. However, it would still come after just after true lies, but that like, shawshank being A- and the rest upwards being A+ so its not a huge drop :)

Except for a few directors, and the types of comedies, our favorites are pretty close. Have you seen the following?:
2008: Taken - not just another dumb action movie, an 80s-good dumb action movie
2005: Match point - a suspense flick like only Woody Allen could make
2004: Vera Drake - stunningly good
2003: Earthlings - doci that will either change your life completely, or not at all
1998: Very bad things - a comedy I think you'll like
1997: L.A. confidential
1995: Before sunrise - chick flick
1992: Baraka - better than Koyaanisqatsi
1992: The player - may ruin the 2nd half of Adaptation. forever
1987: The princess bride
1967: Cool hand Luke
