Author Comments:
This list has multiple-personality disorder. This is a poll, and a best-of, and a to-see.
It's about movies which are about the film business. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if the film shows a camera filming (a film being filmed within the film).
Feedback sought.
Suggestions welcome! No crap, please. If there is crap on this list, please advise me to remove it. Titles are in no particular order.
I'm especially seeking movies which contain substantial insight into the film-making world itself, either real or fictional, TV or theatrical, comedy or drama.
I've seen the bulleted ones.

Contempt
Beware of a Holy Whore
State of Things
Living in Oblivion
Tristram Shandy
Lost in La Mancha
Cool, thanks.
No problemo.
It should be films on movie-film only? If you include TV-film, Network and The King of Comedy leapt to mind. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan revolves around his filming a documentary, but I believe it's a TV documentary.
Buster Keaton's The Cameraman? I haven't seen Dziga Vertov's The Man with the Movie Camera (Chelovek s kino-apparatom) (1929) yet, but it's well-regarded, and I'd be willing to bet it's appropriate.
American Movie and Capturing the Friedmans? (Are documentaries allowed?)
This is such a fun list! Great idea!
TV is included. Network is a good one, because it shows the process of making TV.
And documentaries.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Ooh! The Bad and the Beautiful.
And definitely The Big Knife.
Thank you! I'd like to see The Big Knife.
The House That Dripped Blood (1971) (the last segment)
The Last Movie (1971)
Silent Movie (1976)
Hollywood Boulevard (1976)
The World's Greatest Lover (1977)
The Stunt Man (1980)
Fascinating choices.
Inland Empire ;-)
Thank you!
