Despite our different aesthetics, I do love many of the films you mention, which may mean I should see Werckmeister Harmonies, the only one I haven't seen on here.

I doubt you'd like it. It is very different than the other films on the list. It's Hungarian.

Here's a preview from an IMDB review: "Some might accuse the film--which centres on a rural town riven by the arrival of a "circus" consisting only of a dead white whale in a corrugated iron trailer and a character called "The Prince" whose nihilistic and inflammatory remarks incite riots--of veering very close to a parody of miserabilist cinema. Okay, so it's in black and white; there's a lot of mud, rubbish, smoke and wetness; there's not much dialogue between not very attractive people; every take lasts between five and ten minutes; and there are many scenes of people trudging through cold and bleak landscapes. (You'll never see so much trudging in a film.)"

tangent...

I'm very surprised that so many of the best films of this decade (in my system) happen to be North American productions. In the 50s, maybe only 2 of the top 10 would've been North American productions.

Southeast Asia is creating some great films lately, just not quite top 10.

Africa makes no good films. Even Sembene is overrated.

Hmm. Do you think it's a parody, or does all of that which seems funny to the reviewer work for you dramatically?

Oh, it works for me. Not as good as Satantango, but much better than The Man From London.

Tarr is a bit like Tarkovsky. He composes each frame beautifully and stunningly. He's one of those "painterly" filmmakers.

Here's a preview:

But YouTube really doesn't do Tarr justice. Imagine Tarkovsky on YouTube.

Memento gone down? On your greatest list of all time you stated it was an 8.8? Is this deliberate? Btw, nice list, I agree with all the films on here I've seen.

Yeah, a bit, but it's ranking all-time hasn't changed. :)

I couldn't fall asleep, so...

Very nice list.

Primer barely missed my list. Personally, I prefer its twists and turns to Memento's.

Now, tell me about Hukkle.

I can't really say much of anything about what is so brilliant about Hukkle without spoiling it. Have you seen it? If not, watch it before you read anything about it.

How much does Wikipedia rule?

Its article on the 2008 South Ossetia war is about 15 pages long and has 244 hyperlinked references. The article did not exist 10 days ago. It was written for free, is available for free, and is easily the best single-point source of information on the conflict.

American rulers seem to think it rules a lot. The Wikipedia, that is.
