A-Z of my favourite places in Georgia, my home state

- A - The Atlanta Aquarium. It is the largest aquarium in the nation and houses whale sharks! The only place in the U.S. where you can see the largest shark in the ocean.
- 2nd is Amicolola Falls is a natural wonder. It is over 700 feet high with 7 cascades. It is the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi.
- 3rd- The Atlanta History Center has wonderful exhibits. Al.so here are the Swan House ( a mansion from the 1920's) and the Tully Smith House (a pre-Civil War plantation complete with the slaves quarters).
- B - The Blue Ridge Mountains, wonderful hiking, camping, white water rafting, and kayaking. It is beautiful up there.
- C- Callaway Gardens- Callaway Gardens is beautiful gardens that are breathtaking. Don't miss the butterfly house while you are there. It is a wonderful resort.
- 2nd is Cloudland Canyon. The Canyon is breathtaking. When you climb down there are 3 gorgeous waterfalls for you to ogle over.
- D - Dahlonega is a beautiful little gold mining town. It is beautiful. The museum is interesting to visit with the history of the Georgia gold rush. Also, go to The Smith House to eat. It is fabulous. There is a lot of wonderful hiking trails nearby.
- E- Elan, Chateau Elan. It is a beautiful resort to visit.. There are gold courses, wonderful tennis facilities, stables, and climbing walls. They have a full service spa and fitness centers. The winery is a must to visit. We spent way too much money after the wine tasting. The restaurants were all fabulous.
- 2nd- Etowah Indian Mounds. Very interesting and fascinating history of the Cherokee Indians.
- F - Fernbank Science Center- They have lots of really cool exhibits. The dinosaur exhibit is really great. I use to love the planetarium as a kid. They also have lots of great rotating exhibits.
- 2nd- The Fabulous Fox Theater is an old historic theater that has wonderful shows. It is a beautiful place to visit.
- G - Georgia State Capital- It is a beautiful buiding in Atlanta. Its top is made of real gold.
- H - Helen, GA. Helen, GA is a cute town in the North Georgia Mountains. It looks like a little Bavarian village. All buildings have to have the Bavarian theme to be approved. They also have a large Oktoberfest celebration ev ery y ear with live music and other festivities. It is a lot of fun. There is also a lot of good hiking and camping sights nearby. There are some of the prettiest hikes near there with waterfalls in the N. GA mountains.
- I - Improv Comedy at Whole world Theater and Dad's Garage Theater....both are hysterical.
- J- Jekyll Island- Prettiest beaches. They are not as crowded as in Florida. There is also the protected sea turtles that come to these remote beaches. It is wonderful to watch them, but don't disturb them!
- Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta- It is a fabulous museum. There are 2 permanent collections. One is the history of Jews in Atlanta and the 2nd is about the Holocaust. The 3rd exhibits rotate.
- K - Kennesaw Mountain- Kennesaw Mountain is a great hike, There is a civil war memorial on top because this was the site of a very bloody battle. It is a beautiful hike.
- L - Lake Lanier- Great place to go for the day. It has pretty beaches and water slide park. They also always have festival of lights that is incredible during the holidays.
- M - Use to be Music Midtown before they cancelled it for this year. It was a great 3 day music festival in May.
- Magnolia Springs State Park- You can see alligators, fish, and turtles swim in the crystal springs. It is a very beautiful place.
- Martin Luther King Center- It is a great tribute to one of the most influential men in history of our country.
- N- New Echota- It was the Cherokee capital. It is a very interesting historic site.
- O - The Occoee River. This is the river that was used for the river kayaking in the 19 96 Olympics. This is one of the best rivers in the country to kayak. But, it is by no means for beginners.
- Another wonderful place that starts with O is the Okeefenokee Swamp. There are many wonderous creatures that live in the swamps.
- P- P.O.W museum in Andersonville and Andersonville Prison. This was known as the worst prison during the Civil War. Conditions here were atrocious.
- Q - Quintessence Day Spa- I have not actually been here yet. I heard it is wonderful. It was hard to think of a Q.
- R - Rock Eagle- It is an Indian Mound shaped like an Indian. It is a beautiful, but eerie site.
- S - Savannah is a beautiful historic city. The downtown area has gorgeous architecture. There are beautiful historic homes. If you can, Savannah has one of the largest St. Paddy's Day celebration in the country. The Savannah River is dyed green on St. Paddy's Day.
- Close 2nd is Six Flags- Love Six Flags with all the rollercoasters. We get season passes every year.
- Close 3rd.....it is hard to write about Georgia and not put in Stone Mountain. It is the largest mountain of granite. It has a huge stone carving on the side of the mountain of Civil War generals. There is a beach area, waterslide park, skating rink, and horseback riding. You can chose to climb the mountain or take a tram to the top. At night, they have a lazer show.
- T - Tallulah Gorge, Georgia. Tallulah Gorge is so beautiful that Tallulah Bankhead (the singer) named her after the Gorge. You can go down into the Gorge and at the bottom is a waterfall that y ou can slide down i nto a crystal clear spring. Then you can go boulder hopping down to a series of waterfalls. A few times a year they let the dam down so that you can go kayaking. You have to prove you are an experienced kayaker to get a permit for this. It is a tough ride. Also, nearby is Panther Creek Trail, whick is a wonderful hiking trail. You also need to cross the suspension bridge over the canyon.
- 2nd- Tybee Island- Beautiful beaches. It is part of the Golden Isles.
- U- Underground Atlanta- Use to be better than it is now. It is a tourist trap, but got to see it once.
- V - Vortex has the best hamburgers in Atlanta and it has a really cool atmosphere. I have to mention the Varisty here because it is a historic drive thru restaurant that everyone lives. I think the food there is greasy....but it is a historic place.
- W - Warm Springs- It is home to what is known as the Little White House. This is where Rooservelt would come to relax. It is a beautiful place. There is the famous unfinished portrait here of the president. He suffered from a stroke while posing for the portrait.

- Z - The Zoo. The Atlanta Zoo has many wonderful animal exhibits. It is really a wonderful place to visit.








Thank you for the inspiration. I copied the idea of this list, but made it my own. It was harder than it looked. I had a hard time with Q, X, & Y. I also had a few places for several of the letters. And had a hard time coming up with others.
