Author Comments:

Music is good. I like music.

Yay! David Cross! I also own both of those David Cross albums... they are two of the funniest comedy albums I've ever heard... Nice to see someone else on Listology who appreciates him :)

Heh... yeah, just when we all thought Bill Hicks would be the last great American stand-up, along comes Cross.

Hey Cosgrove,
email me @ billythewalker@gmail.com/ I have some of hte albums on your wish list, notably arch enemy, arctic monkeys and muse, and would be willing to trade over msn or aim.
Thank you,
Billy

Wow, cool collection... I don't think my collection would be allowed in the same room. :-)

White Zombie, "La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1": Not my all-time favorite band (that would be Wire), but if I could only have one album, it'd be this one.

PWEI, "Cure For Sanity": Just put this on my hard drive, and it'd been a good ten years since I listened to it. "Dance of the Mad Bastards"--best groove ever.

Modest Mouse: If you like them, I recommend "Building Nothing Out of Something". It's not totally consistent, but it has some songs I consider absolutely necessary.

You're the only person I know who has complete collections of Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine and Therapy?, two bands I almost got into, but didn't. (I liked what I heard, but never followed through.)

Did you like The Young Gods' "TV Sky"? Cuz the album's not bad, but their two earlier discs are better.

I actually don't much care for "TV Sky". It's one of about 40 or so albums on this list that I plan to get rid of at the first opportunity. Maybe I'll post that list soon... it includes a couple titles you probably wouldn't expect ("Amnesiac", "The Man on the Burning Tightrope", most of the KMFDM stuff, all of the 22 Brides stuff).

Funny, your description of "Building Nothing Out of Something" sounds almost exactly like my feelings on "Lonesome Crowded West" -- it's worth wading through stagnant, self-indulgent messes like "Trucker's Atlas" to get to "Cowboy Dan", "Trailer Trash" and especially "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine" (my current favorite Mouse track).

If I was allowed just one album... I'd go crazy. No, seriously, it'd probably be "We're Only in it for the Money". Or "Angel Dust". And yeah -- "Dance of the Mad Bastards" officially has the greatest groove in dance-rock history. I think there was a big ceremony and everything when they announced it. :-)

Lastly, if you had any interest, I could send ya compilations of Carter and Therapy? so you can catch up on what you've been missing. Of course, it'd take a while to get there -- ask socialretard how long he's been waiting... :-)

Heh--I like "Trucker's Atlas" more than "Cowboy Dan". "Trailer Trash" is, of course, awesome.

"Angel Dust"--wow, haven't heard that in years. I really liked the first two singles, the names of which escape me right now. Appreciated their attempt to bring a crazy-ass Zappa sensibility to the masses.

I would love to have compilations of Carter & Therapy?! And I can wait as long as it takes... (Actually, I'm in the process of weeding through the songs on my hard drive, which is going to take a while, so I'm in no hurry.)

Man, that must've taken you awhile. I'm afraid to find out how many CDs I have. And then there's albums.

You've got a lot of interesting stuff that I didn't think anyone else liked (Silverfish!) and a lot of things I don't have but am curious about. So I'm looking forward to hearing whatever you burned for me.

Heh... one of the CDs (a revision of a CD I sent a friend earlier this year) has "Big Bad Baby Pig Squeal" on it. I musta secretly known or something.

Guess I need to get my CD list up now.... Good discs, by the way.

Yes, do that. At the very least, we need more Hicks love here.

It's up, at least partially.

I see you got the Circle Takes the Square CD. Man, I love that record. I recently got their earlier EP and it's pretty good too.

What do you think of the Madvillain record? I like it, but there aren't any particular songs that just kick my ass.

Honestly, I just bought the Madvillan CD this afternoon. I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I've heard it's pretty good, though, and I do like the MF Doom stuff I've heard previous (as well as the stuff he did with KMD).

Circle's pretty nifty -- makes me think of a more serious-minded Blood Brothers for some reason...

Okay, wow, you own a lot of CDs.

Ah, "The Shape of Jazz to Come". I love that album. It's the only Ornette I can listen to from start to finish.

Did you bother to count how many CDs you had ?
I 100% back you on Afghan Whigs
do not hesitate to purchase more Luke Haines's Auteurs, all three follow-up albums (Now I'm a cowboy, After murder park & That's how I learned to love the bootboys) are great
Hmm, seems we have a fan of Jello Biafra's here
How come you don't have Bjork's debut Debut album ?
You definitely lack in Bowie but you knew that already, didn't you ?
having all CUSM seems so wicked
I only have Nick Cave's Let Love In, what other albums of his should I, in your opinion, absolutely purchase ?
Buy Bringing it all back home and Blood on the tracks and added to those you already own, you would have all the Bob Dylan one really needs
Are other Cop Shoot Cop's albums comparable to Ask Questions later ?
Isn't it a shame that PJ announced she was retiring?
Ned's Dustbin ? All CUSM ? lots of PWEI ? Where's your Inspiral carpets, then ?
and finally why do you have Henry's spoken word works but nothing by Rollins Band ?
Thanks for sharing your cd rack with us...

In order:

I haven't counted, but thankfully Listology does that for me -- apparently, there's 612 items on this list.

It's funny... "New Wave" is one of those albums I tend to forget about until I decide to start pruning my collection and then I'll throw it in and listen to it to see if I want to keep it and find myself thinking 'Why don't I listen to this more often?'

Yep, big Jello booster. Ever since I got turned on to the Dead Kennedys back in middle school.

I got into Bjork late -- picked up "Post" used on a whim in '99. As a result, I still haven't gotten around to picking up "Debut" (when it came out, I remember liking 'Human Behavior' but finding 'Big Time Sensuality' boring, which is not the case now).

Yeah, Bowie's one of those guys I probably should have more of. But then, there's a lot of stuff I should have more of.

The next Cave album you should buy is "Henry's Dream" -- that's my favorite. After that, go whichever way you choose, since I haven't heard a clunker from him yet. (You can probably skip "No More Shall We Part" if you aren't a completist, though. It's not so much.)

Not much in my opinion is comparable to "Ask Questions Later", let alone other CSC albums -- I think "Ask" is one of the best albums of the 90s. But the others are still good. "Release" is a little cleaner and more commercial, with parts of it anticipating Tod Ashley's subsequent work with Firewater; "White Noise", paradoxically, is probably their weakest effort but would the album I would recommend after "Ask" if only because it contains my two favorite CSC songs ('If Tomorrow Ever Comes' and 'The Coldest Day of the Year'). And while we're here... anyone else find it mindblowing that Cop Shoot Cop is now being used to sell Nikes? And I thought Nintendo using one of the Butthole Surfers's most profane songs to sell Gameboys was bad...

PJ's retiring, Mclusky broke up and now we have Alter Bridge to deal with. Geez.

I've actually never heard anything from the Inspiral Carpets -- the Carter/Ned/PWEI love comes from my exposure to a local (and fairly comprehensive) alt-rock radio show that played every Sunday where I lived. The DJ played a lot of stuff(any album pre-1997 on this list can probably be traced to that program), but I don't recall any Carpets. What do you recommend I start with?

And I used to own several Rollins Band albums before I realized that Henry's musical career post-Black Flag has consisted of basically writing and releasing the same album every couple of years. So I sold all the Rollins Band stuff and kept "Hot Animal Machine" which sounds a lot like the Rollins Band except that it's also got the hilarious Henrietta Collins and the Wifebeating Childhaters EP attached to it.

Holy crap, you bought Ludicra's first record. I hope you like their prog/punk/black metal craziness. If you haven't listened to it yet, check out the scream at about the one minute mark of "Userpent." Just insane. And live they're even better.

Yeah, I found it used for six bucks at my local patchouli-scented indie record store. I remembered you being quite high on them, so I picked it up. If I do enjoy it, I think they had another album by them at the same price -- hopefully it doesn't disappear in the interim.

Another Great Love Song is better than Hollow Psalms, but they're both good. Let me know what you think of them.

Sorry to insist but I would really like your opinion on Nick Cave's albums and Cop Shoot Cop's....

Heh, sorry for the delay... I figured a comprehensive answer would take a while.

Steve, do you really dig King Missile? If so, you should check out their first three LPs. Much better than "The Way to Salvation" and that self-titled crap album.

I think the self-titled is underrated. A bit less quirky than their other albums, but it does have "The Commercial" and "The Dishwasher" and "Let's Have Sex" so it can't be all bad.

I take it you've not heard "Failure". It's aptly named -- I have yet to hear it all the way through.

Also, John S. Hall's album with Kramer is pretty amusing.

Oh man, you have the "66" single by the Whigs! Whooo, that's ... that's an amazing song, and I was sickened when I heard it used in that Rachael Leigh Cook movie.

It showed up in a Rachel Leigh Cook movie? Thank God I don't generally watch her films -- it was bad enough when I heard 'Somethin' Hot' during "American Pie 2".

Yup. "She's All That." The "You walked in / Just like smoke / With a little come on, come on" etc. opening starts when Cook walks down the steps in slow motion. At that point, I was so appalled I put the TV on mute. You don't ruin a great song like that. What's next, U2's "One" in a Jennifer Garner movie?

If I remember correctly, the Whigs (or at the very least, Dulli) were in "Beautiful Girls," but I don't recall what they were singing.

Like I needed another reason not to see "She's All That". That's worse than Ludwig Van getting the Ludivico treatment.

If you had to choose what do you think your 10 favorite albums are?

Nice CD collection! I saw your Nirvana cds, and I saw two that I never heard of, Incesticide and From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. When did those come out?

Incesticide is a B-sides/rarites collection released as a stopgap disc by DGC in between Nevermind and In Utero. Wishkah's a live album released in '96.
