Ultimate Classic Trance List (1990-1995)

  1. Classic trance is not a real subgenre of trance, it's a name given to early trance music that wasn't strictly defined. And right because of that undefineness, it was the only real type of trance, since only music that is free of all limitations and formulas can entrance and hypnotize you - that is, achieve the true goal of trance music.
  2. The whole story started in 1990 (although there was a couple of trancey tracks in the 80s, but more about them later) with Age Of Love in Belgium and Dance 2 Trance in Germany and their singles The Age Of Love and We Came In Peace. But trance really kicked off a year later with the creation of two German labels that helped to define a unique sound, that will at first be called techno-trance or trance-dance and later just trance. That two labels were MFS (founded by Mark Reeder and based in Berlin) and Eye Q (founded by Sven Väth and based in Frankfurt). Both of them had the same goal: to produce and release hypnotic techno music that will take a listener on a journey.
  3. Trance got its distinctive sound and identity just a year later when Harald Blüchel joined MFS family and started to release his specifically melodic trance tracks. At the same time Sven Väth opened Harthouse, sublabel of Eye Q, which immediately generated success, because it offered some other types of trance besides the standard type (which was reserved for Eye Q), such as acid trance (Hardfloor), hard trance (Arpeggiators), tribal trance (The Ambush) and even some weird spacey type of trance that only one man know to do (Spicelab). Pretty soon trance become the most exciting sound in Germany (and wider Europe, especially after Jam & Spoon's remix of The Age Of Love) and everyone tried to make it (or at least incorporate elements of it in their own sound).
  4. But the real explosion happened in 1993 when Superstition opened its doors and Oliver Lieb started to release pure trance under his L.S.G. moniker on it. Paul Van Dyk also established himself on the scene with his remix of Humate's Love Stimulation, Pete Namlook released couple of his very influental trance albums and trance finally took off in England, mainly thanks to Caspar Pound and Simon Berry.
  5. In 1994 original sound of trance slowly started to diminish as epic type of progressive house (which will later transform to progressive trance) and progressive trance started to emerge. Some producers continued to release classic trance while other switched to sound that Perfecto and Hooj were promoting back then. Final kick to raw sound of classic trance came in 1995, when Robert Miles conquered the world (of EDM) with Children.
  6. Short list of people mostly responsible for creation and definition of trance sound:
  7. Mark Reeder - established the first real trance label (MFS), discovered Cosmic Baby, PVD, Effective Force and other well-known trance acts.
  8. Sven Väth - the main pusher of trance sound in clubs, founded Eye Q and Harthouse and was involved in first trance hit (Zyon - No Fate).
  9. Rolf Ellmer/Dag Lerner - duo responsible for creation of german trance style, involved in highly influental Dance 2 Trance and Peyote projects. DJ Dag was, next to Sven Väth, the most important classic trance dj.
  10. Harald Blüchel - introduced the more melodic sound of trance, created the first mixed trance compilation (Tranceformed From Beyond) and released Stellar Supreme, landmark album in trance history.
  11. Oliver Lieb - prolific artist that ruled the scene with his Spicelab and L.S.G. projects.
  12. Pete Namlook - although he's better known as ambient producer, he released some very influental trance albums as Sequential, 4Voice and Hearts Of Space (mostly in collaboration with other trance producers).
  13. Jürgen Driessen - king of acid trance, released more than 200 records on many famous labels. Oliver Lieb of acid trance.
  14. Ralf Hildenbeutel/Matthias Hoffmann/Steffen Britzke - trio that produced so many classics under various monikers, studio producers of Sven Väth and people responsible for establishing Eye Q as the premier classic trance label.
  15. Caspar Pound - founded Rising High (when he was only 19) and UK division of Harthouse. Rising High (along with Simon Berry's Platipus label) is one of the labels mostly responsible for breakthrough of trance in UK, thanks to licencing rare records from Fax +49-69/450464 label and The Secret Life Of Trance, seminal compilation series.
  16. Trance and trancey tracks existed even before 1990, and here are some 80s trancey tracks:
  17. Night Moves - Transdance (New York Disco Mix) [1983] - totally futuristic and hypnotic disco track that sounded nothing like other disco music of that time.
  18. The KLF - What Time Is Love? [1988] - especially the a-side of this vinyl, that employs the beats under the trippy acid loop at various stages of the track. It's the first record in so-called Pure Trance series, and many believe that the whole trance story started right here with this track.
  19. Space Opera - Space Opera Theme [1989] - Belgian new beat track from the end of the 80s, but more melodic and trancey than avarage new beat track of the 80s.
  20. And finally, here's the list:

Are there any good trance albums? I'm attracted especially to those that brought major innovations to the genre.

these old albums are pretty hard to get, if you find any of these in shops, you are really lucky:

1. dance 2 trance - moon spirits (classic trance)
2. art of trance - wildlife on one (acid, some goa trance)
3. young american primitive - young american primitive (ambient, breakbeat trance)
4. cosmic baby - stellar supreme (melodic trance)
5. union jack - there will be no armageddon (trance, some techno)

I have the Union Jack album on vinyl. It's probably hard to find now, you're right.

OMG :P I have maybe a third of these, possibly a bit more. My soulseek will be kept busy, that's for sure. Probably my favourite label for Classic Trance is Eye Q. They just seemed to churn out classics on a constant basis. Hmm, to argue no other trance would exist is a bit controversial. Its definately true about the ones you've mentioned but the Psytrance community would probably disagree.

Eye Q is my favourite label too. I pretty much love everything they've put out.
About other subgenres: I said that only for other eurotrance subgenres (prog, epic...). Psy is not eurotrance subgenre, and I have great respect for psy. In fact, I'm going to make another massive (200+ tracks) list about psy when I find some time

ppl, i have a very rare tune (as for me) on a tape, but i`m not sure about the artist and the track name! Is it possible to send a clip to someone of you to hear and to help me? Or to reccomend some forum where i can ask for help!
Many thanx in advance!!!

Trance 91-95 forever!!!

This is an amazing list. You have to have quite the music collection to have been able to make a list like this.

I share the same opinion with you progressive house list. Astounding.

Thanks. The hardest part was to choose only 200 for the list :)
And don't look at the prog. house list. It's shit. I'm making a new one soon.

Im very glad to see some people that appreciate the trance classics! I also think that the best electronics were made within that period!
I couldnt see "Pulse - Cariño (Silencio)" as well as "Guillaume La Tortue - Salinas" in your list! These are in my TOP10 ;)

Sljiva, where are you comming from?

Pulse - Carino: nice, typical Harthouse track. I never listened to it until today, because I only had an ambient version of it on some old compilation. But the Fourvoice Mix (that was released on vinyl) is indeed trance. So I'll add it later when I add some other Harthouse tracks.

I haven't heard that other track but I'll look up for it. BTW, I'm from Croatia. Bet you don't know where is that...

awesome list, i'm thinkin of doing my own classic trance one soon, it's such a great genre!
I really want to hear Emmanuel Top - Acid Phase! I have most of the other songs on your list and I've heard another of E.Top's songs but never heard this particular one, in fact seeing you put it so high makes me want it even more!! lol
anyway yeah, great list - keep up the good work

Nice list. I've heard quite a few of these, but there are a bunch I'm not familiar with that I'll listen to. I like the Harthouse and Eye Q labels, although they're not my favourite. I really like the labels Prolekult, X-Trax, React, and Choci's Chewns, to name a few.

I have a 2 Harthouse compilations you're probably familiar with,
Harthouse-Retrospective 2
Harthouse Compilation-Dark Hearts Vol. 1

and also
Synthetic Progress - Monotune/Acid Future
Hardfloor-Trancescript Mixes
Hardfloor-Into the Nature (the Remixes)
which are also on Harthouse.

You have a good taste:)
By the labels you mentioned, seems like you prefer the harder side of trance. I like some of it too, but it's generally not my thing.

And BTW, Reactivate is probably one of my favourite series from that time (especially the first ten instalments)

Thanks. You have good taste too.
Yes I prefer harder trance, esp. acid trance. Anything with a 303 in it I usually like. I love anything Tim Taylor has done, and also DJ Misjah.

But I also like a lot of melodic trance.

Do you have Reactivate Classics? It has almost all their hits on it.

How about Acrid Abeyance? They are my favourite acid trance act...
And I haven't heard Reactivate Classics, but I own the first 12 parts of the series (Everything after 10 is not that good imo)

Ab Chic - Nexus 6 (Acrid Abeyance Mix) is one of my favourite tracks of all time.
My favourite acid trance group is Hardfloor.
I found Prolekult was the most reliable label for good acid trance. I own most of the singles from that label. "Prolekulture" was their all time greatest hits compilation, which is great.

Reactivate classics includes:
Ramirez-La Musika Tremenda
Jens-Loops & Tings
Robert Armani-Circus Bells (Hardfloor Remix)
Second Phase-Mentism
Fierce Ruling Diva-Rubb It In
Abfahrt-Come Into My Life
CJ Bolland-Horsepower
GTO-Pure (Energy)
DHS-House of God
D-Shake-Techno Trance (Paradise Is Now)
Meng-Syndicate-Sonar System
CLS-Can You Feel It?
The Age of Love-The Age of Love
Phase feat. Dr. Motte-Der Klang der Familie

(sorry to take up so much room)
That's pretty impressive that you own all the Reactivate's. Do you have them on CD or vinyl. Mine is on vinyl.

Do you like the "Secret Life of Trance" series? I think they're good.

I have Reactivate from 1-9 on vinyl (actually they are my brother's, I stole them from him), and 10-12 on cd (unmixed versions).
Also, I have Rising High's The Secret Life Of Trance 5, which is not really a trance compilation because it contains lots of techno, uk hardcore and even prog. house, but there is one track that is worth all the money I spent on it: Aura - Caterpillar (Kilner Mix). Huge and long forgotten track. I don't know why I didn't put it on the list, but when I put it, it'll probably end up in top 30.
Hardfloor is cool too, my brother has got pretty much their whole discography, but I can't get my hands on it. I've listened to TB Resuscitation and Respect, and they sounded very good. Although I'd say they are more (acid) techno than trance...

Is your brother a dj or something?
I have Secret Life of Trance 4 on vinyl. It's actually the first record I ever bought. That one is more ambient/trance imo. It has some decent tracks on it. I had a few more on cd, but they're lost now unfortunately.
I have all the Hardfloor albums on vinyl, but I don't like what they did after Respect. I agree it is more techno than trance, except for TB Resuscitation. You should make a list of your record collection, I'd be interested to see it. (:

Well, he was living and djing in Germany at the beginning of the 90s. And if it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't listen to this music
Hehe, it would be interesting to see my collection, but half of my cds are at his place, some are at my friend's, some are broken, some are in the shed... But when I collect them, I'll try to make some kind of list. Until then here are some trance cds that I'll never give to anyone:
Hallucinogen - Twisted
Cosmic Baby - Stellar Supreme
L.S.G. - Rendezvous In Outer Space
Resistance D - Ztringz Of Life
Paul Van Dyk - 45 RPM
Sven Vath - Accident In Paradise
Astral Projection - Trust In Trance
Doof - Let's Turn On

I was wondering, aren't Acid Air Raid and Access hard acid techno? I don't like Access for some reason, the pitch is varied too randomly. Else, I've barely heard any of this stuff. Quite a list though!

And, are hard acid trance and hard acid techno quite similar?

Technically speaking, Access is a techno track, but one of those techno tracks (like Orbital's Lush or Choice's Acid Eiffel) that could and were constantly used in trance sets, on trance compilations and everywhere else where trance was appearing. And that's a partial answer on your second question. Acid trance and acid techno are very similar (in fact, back then people called all acid dance music "acid techno" or simply "acid") because the line is very thin (acid sound itself is very entrancing, so a lot of acid techno sounds like acid trance). So it's not really a mistake when someone says that Acperience 1 is acid techno, or Access is acid trance. But since I want to keep this list as pure as possible, I'll delete Access from the list.

One the other hand, Acid Air Raid is a pure trance track

Blind had recommended the 12 minute Acid Air Raid version and it really blew my mind. Like that, would you have any no holds barred acid track recommendations?

I can't really, since I try to stay away or completely avoid that kind of trance. But you can ask lyceaum, she seems to be interested in hard/ravey/acid trance

I've pretty much finished the Goa list and I was wondering if you have any more recommendations for it, since I want to make it as comprehensive as possible and hunt down every last worthy Goa track there is.

Yeah, you can explore Technossomy, Psyko Disko, Darshan, X-Dream, and for the beginnings try some Eat Static, Timeshard and Zen Paradox

Thanks, I'll check them out.

After giving Blue Plant a few listens I'm beginning to understand why Blue Planet Corporation is your favourite Goa artist. That album has some of the best melodies I've ever heard.

I couldn't find any Psyko Disko, Timeshard or Zen Paradox, guess I have to look harder...but I added some of the rest. Looks much better now. Also added a short list of the best Goa tracks since the original was getting too long.

What a fantastic list.
Thank you.

You're going to wear my internet connection out with your lists :D

You seem quite knowledgable concerning trance records. I wonder if I could trouble you with an ID request. It concers a track I copied from a friend on a cassette back in 1995 (and he didn't know the artist/song - a dj made him a mixtape). Ever since (from time to time) I've been trying to ascertain the artist/song title. And unfortunatly, no luck yet. I've tried friends, acqaintances, forums, recordshops, but to no avail. When I stumbled across your list yesterday, I tried looking up (some of) the songs mentioned in your list (untill know I tried 50+), but still no luck :-( (but a lot of new and interesting records)

So, as a sort of last resort, I thought I'd ask you...

A sound clip can be found here: http://www.watzatsong.com/EN/name-that-tune/90958.html (the latest site I tried)

I really hope you can help me out!

Thanks very much in advance for your effort

King regards

Sorry can't help you with that. Sounds like typical 90's breakbeat/electro tune...

Hello sljiva,

Thanks for your reply and pointer in the right(er) direction. The quest continues!

No Juno Reactor in your list???

I have hundreds of classic trance / goa tunes dating back to 1991 mostly around 92-94 would love to exchange some tunes I dont have with others in here, anyone interested email me at billfastr@yahoo.com

The rarest songs on this list are all done by Levent Canseven. I've been trying to look for them everywhere but they are really hard to find. Can anyone suggest where I might find them?

Those three are indeed ultra scarce. They can be found on Trance Vibes compilation, which was released by his label at the time. It's gonna be hard to find it (even I don't have it anymore since I deleted my whole illegally downloaded collection), but they are definitely worth seeking.

Why did you delete your collection? I cherish my trance collection as if it were my child! I did however manage to order the last copy of Trance Vibes off of discogs so when it arrives i can rip and upload those rarities.

Apart from those three, I pretty much have every track on here. Excellent list I must say (in spite of me having disagreements in places). I do recommend getting Mystic Force's - Frontier album (get the 2xcd one) and adding some more of his stuff on the list (such as: starburst, everlast, enigma/second wave) to name a few. Some singles I think merit a spot on the list are:

The Nights Of Pan - Far Beyond Space And Time
Brainstorm - Birdy
Emojonal - Make E Move
L.S.G. - Lonely Casseopaya
Cybordelics - Adventures Of Dama
Aura - Energy Transpose

I was planning to delete it for a long time, but never have the courage to do so, since I had some pretty rare releases that are practically unobtainable in any form these days, plus the whole discographies of some well established labels (in hq). So when I bought my new laptop, I simply decided I'm not gonna transfer it to a new hd. I sold the old computer to some guy who probably deleted the whole thing immediately, without thinking too much about the time, passion and work (and begging numerous known and unknown people over the internet to rip that and that vinyl for me) I put into collecting it. I know it's gonna sound strange, but I kinda felt relieved when I got rid off it. It's been more than a year, and I still don't miss it in the slightest. It helps that I pretty much don't listen to trance (or any dance music for that matter) anymore. I left this list here for those who are interested in it, and I don't plan to update or do anything about it anymore. I've think I've heard all those tracks you listed, and they are all all right. Brainstorm - Birdy I believe is more of a techno tune, released on R&S right?

Hmmm, not the smartest move on your part IMHO. The amount of work you put in should merit at least a back up drive (HDs are cheap these days). I would love to have bought your computer off you and gotten my hands on those rarities. Too bad it ended up going to a guy who didn't even appreciate it in the first place. Wasted talent...

Cygnus X & Simon Berry ftw!!! :D

1000 thanks for this listm. You sure seem to know a lot about trance. You've just enlarged my musical horizon with this list. Classic trance is my favourite genre by far. I'm going to download evey single song from this list.

Hello Guys...Where Can I Find Trance Compilations About 1993-1999?

The "Behind The Eye" compilations from Eye Q and "Trancemaster 1-10" are pretty good. Check those out!

It's very interesting how subjective people's interpretations of various dance music genres can be. Age is a HUGE factor in how people define them. This is particularly so with the word "TRANCE". Many younger people write with total conviction about it without realizing just how far back it really goes. I'd like to offer just a couple bits to suppliment your write up if I may. We were buying records we referred to as "TRANCE" as early as 1986 - long before KLF's "What Time Is Love". Ironically it was originally a spin off of the HOUSE MOVEMENT, not TECHNO, and referred to a minimal hypnotic sound. Also, you mention Night Moves' "Transdance" as a one of a kind in its time, (1983) but perhaps you've learned since originally posting this thread that there were actually tons of this music out at that time. Techno and Italo were easily out as early as the 1979, and 1983 was a peak year for it. There was Techno, Electro and Italo 'a plenty and even House was starting to rear it's head. I like your enthusiasm, and hope you find my input helpful! ;)

You're actually the first one who I hear claiming that trance is an offshot of house, not techno. Though it sounds interesting, I can't really buy into that. Can you elaborate it further?

And if you have some examples of tracks that sound as hypnotic as Transdance (and remember, I refered to New York Disco Mix, not U.K. Disco Mix which sounds different) from that time I'd like to hear them.

do you know this track?

Quality is bad as hell... :)

Great list, thank you !

Thanks for your help to find the name of the track ID (Before 2000 on Contact FM Radio):
