Author Comments:

I adore Francis Strand's How to learn Swedish in 1000 difficult lessons, and I'm totally swiping this list off his site. I hope he doesn't mind. When I get time, I'll sort it a little better, I hope.

Very useful, i'm sure! The list is skitsnygg. So pain follows pruning shears. Saves getting a dictionary, phrsebook. But there's me thinking of moving to Portugal, working on that language. Looks like i'm headed the wrong way. Till now my Swedish has been limited to film titles; on holiday in Gothenburg i asked for pronunciations of Det Sjunde Inseglet, Smulltronstallet (now does this mean wild strawberries/ idyllic spot or both?), Tystnaden, Viskingar och Rop... And as Father Christmas i've found a few phrases of Finnish very helpful.

smultronstället means idilic spot, but i comes from the world smultron, and that means wild strawberries (a thing I didn´t now, as I think these are two widly diffrent things), and ställe which is another world for spot or place of intrest. Its an, what are they called, this things. Oh well I guess you can get it.

I guess you are looking for more or less the same thing as I have desribed below,
Solveig

Smultronstället is the very special spot were you (as a gatherer) allways find wonderful, red warm from the Sun, sweet and ripe Wild Strawberries,,, And they are yours and nobody elses, since you are the only one knowing where to find them...
Solveig

It's a good list... but "Lilla fittan på prärien"... Maybe that's not the right thing to put there. "Lilla flickan på prärien" means "The little girl on the prarie (?) and it's a serie, I don't know the right titel in english, altough it's extremely famous. But "Fitta" is NOT a fine word in swedish. Someone has got it a bit wrong.

The name of the film is "Lilla Huset på prärien" meaning "Little House on the prarie". It is about the Ingalls family.

Thank you. That's what I was trying to find out :)

Well, it's taken pretty much verbatim from Francis' site -- it's not intended to be a dictionary. I did at least take out the exact reference. ; )

But it's useful and funny. I'm not blaiming you, it's hard to get it all exactly right. It's a lot of words, I'm surprised that so many are correct. Thank you for bringing the list, it has come to good use from time to time :)

It's great... but I would have liked it to be in alphabetical order.. or something like that...

Alphabetical order would be nice, but on the other hand its not just word. Its fraces and expressions. It seems moore logical to divide the list in to those groups :)

By the way. "Schlager" is the contributions to the Eurovision Song Contest. In Sweden that contest is called "Schlager EM". Its not pop or any other translationable musicstyle, just the special kinds of music that has been played in that old competition (it dates back since 1956). http://www.eurovision.tv/english/ That explanation would be for those non-europeans wondering.

I don't think I would classify förlåt as an adjective. Isn't it a verb?
In English you'd say "I'm sorry", but in Swedish you'd say "Förlåt mig" (forgive me).

I would like to know what the Swedish word hemtagit means in English. I am trying to translate an obituary from my great-grandfather and am not able to locate the translation of this word. Thanks for anyones assistance!

Literally "taken home", since the context is an obituary my guess is it's an euphemism for "died" (as in taken home to heaven by the Lord). It is used that way, too, but it's of course hard to tell without having the entire text.

i know how to say "hello" in swedish it is "hej"

I'm doing some family history and have come across an entry that looks like ...och Otidigt sangelag. Can anyone help me with the translation of that phrase? Thanks! Also are there listings of old Swedish words and phrases found in parish records of the 1700's?

It sounds like an oldfashioned way of saying "sex out of wedlock". "Otidigt" would be "in the wrong time" (as in the saying "i tid och otid", literally "in time and un-time", meaning "in good timing and in bad timing" or, simply, "always"). Today, outside of sayings where a bit of archaic language sometimes remain, the word means "rude" or "rudely", but this is probably not the case here. Sangelag would literally mean "laying in bed". So, this gives us the meaning, "laying in bed in the wrong time".Which, given the time and place, I take to mean "having sex before marriage"

Otidigt sängelag = sex before marriage

How many views does this list have?

That was interesting. I find Swedish to be one of the hardest languages to learn, I think its structure and moreover its pronunciation are so tough to learn. I was trying to listen to their speech with free audio editor but still it was very hard for me. Thank you for this list a lot, I'll save it for my next trip to Sweden!

How lucky I am to have come across this post being a Swedish language student! I spent almost two hours on this page and learned quite a lot of new words... yes, Swedish is that addicting!
