Author Comments:

yeah, like i'll ever get them all. please suggest! several years ago, someone posted a query to a listserv wondering if there were any songs about Texas. Um, yeah, a few. Thanks to everyone who has and will suggest. I have posted as I get them. And ones I remember on my own, I'm adding at the top.

Seems to be a few in country music (surprise, surprise):

"T" For Texas - Jimmie Rodgers
Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Waltz Across Texas - Ernest Tubb
Dallas - The Flatlanders
Heaven, Hell Or Houston - ZZ Top
Galveston - Glen Campbell
El Paso - Marty Robbins
Amarillo - Emmylou Harris
Streets Of Laredo - Buck Owens
Luckenbach, Texas (Back To The Basics Of Love) - Waylon Jennings
Brownsville Girl - Bob Dylan

Way Back Texas-Pat Green
(if it wasn't for) Texas- George Strait
Somewhere down in texas-george strait
remember the alamo-george strait
austin-blake shelton

Livin' On the Edge (of Houston) - Reverend Horton Heat
Just Like a Texan - Laurie York
Memories of East Texas - Michelle Shocked
(Making the run to) Gladewater - Michelle Shocked
Lone Star State of Mind - Nanci Griffith

First five off the top of my head. Do the songs have to have the word "Texas" or the name of the city in the song title? Or can it be anywhere in the song?

Also, "All My Exes Live in Texas" by, hmmm, my mind's going blank. George Strait, maybe. Check allmusic.com.

Definitely George Strait; I don't have to look it up - can't believe I forgot that one!

I think I'll keep this list to Texas/city in the title. I'm sure the list of "about Texas" or "mentioning Texas" could get equally as long. Maybe I'll post one of those soon.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm definitely curious to go check these songs out now.

Aha! Knew there was another couple floating around in there somewhere.

Price of San Jacinto - Reverend Horton Heat
Texas Rock-a-billy Rebel - Reverend Horton Heat

People in Dallas Got Hair - Waylon Jennings

No really.

I certainly believe you as they certainly do. In Houston, in fact, there is an annual "Big Hair Ball". I've never made it, but it's on my list of things to do before I die.

This list rules. \m/

Also from the late, great Waylon:
Abilene
T for Texas (also called Blue Yodel No. 1)

This list haunts me.

Amarillo - Sideways Forest
San Antonio - Frank Black and the Catholics

And of course, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys: Home in San Antone
San Antonio Rose
Can't Get Enough of Texas
Texarkana Baby (?)

They had a theme, and they went with it.

Amarillo - Love Spirals Downwards

New song just came out by Bowling for Soup...it's kinda rock/pop called "Ohio" but it's about Texas...chorus goes "Come back to Texas..." It's a fun song with a bunch of references to Texas cultures (ie Willie Nelson, Rodeo, Blue Bell, NASA) check it out!

also, new song by George Strait "If it wasn't for Texas" also just came out.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the contribution - I've included the George Strait, but the Bowling for Soup song belongs on another list I should create - Songs that mention Texas or its cities (but have neither in the title)

A few more:

Texas Tornado (blowin' me away again)- not sure of artist
Dallas - Alan Jackson

Every Time That It Rains, Garth Brooks - mentions Austin
Rodeo or Mexico, Garth Brooks - mentions Waco

Thanks for the contribution - I included the first 2, but I'm saving the others for another list I should create - Songs that mention Texas or its cities (but have neither in the title). Another of those: Route 66 - originally recorded by Nat King Cole.

100% TEXAN- KEVIN FOWLER
LAREDO- CHRIS CAGLE
BLAME IT ON TEXAS- MARK CHESNUT
THE BLUEST EYES IN TEXAS- RESTLESS HEART
