imo... death should be the punishment for comparing eyes wide shut to full metal jacket... i still don't get why people don't think eyes wide shut is as good as his best.

After I had first seen it, I was disappointed. But I promise you to re-watch it (in the next weeks, or months). Yet, I'm sure that it won't top The Shining.

Well, go on and shoot me 'cause I think "Eyes" is a damn sight better than "Full Metal Jacket". That's right, better.

I think eyes wide shut is better than full metal jacket too... but it's not even close.

btw, although it's been 6 or 7 years since i've seen the shining, i do think dr. strangelove is kubricks best, followed closely by eyes wide shut and paths of glory.

Wait... so you got it backwards and what you meant was that you think people who bring "FMJ" into any discussion of Kubrick's best should be killed? Or did I miss something?

i don't even know what i saying... but what i meant was that the two movies should not be uttered in the same breath because FMJ is not worthy of the praise Eyes wide shut should get.

see... that's what happens when i try to be witty or humorous... I F it up.

I think grandpa chum has been pretty consistent with his support of EWS. Did the double-negative throw you off? "i still DON'T get why people DON'T think eyes wide shut is as good as his best."

Damn you, double negative! DAMN YOU!

Thanks, chum for mentioning Dr. Strangelove, which I have totally forgotten!

I think Dr Strangelove is the best Kubrick film i have seen, with Lolota and The Shining tying for the worst, and the first half of Full Metal Jacket is amazing, its just than the second half is so average.

I'll definetly rewatch Dr.Strangelove, 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut.

I cannot understand why you think about The Shining as one of his worst. It is amazing.

But I absolutely agree with you on Full Metal Jacket.

yeah... i would suggest a rewatch... Strangelove and eyes wide shut in the "good" range is completely unacceptable... may have to add torture to that death sentence.

Yes, I'm guilty of this... blasphemy!

I felt The Shining was overlong, the kid was annoying, and Shelley Duvall way too ugly ;) .

Hehe...some interesting points here. Everything OK, but overlong?

just saw the first half of lolita... and so far i was pleasantly surprise... it seems as good as some of his best... i don't see why it's looked down upon as a lesser film

I've noticed that they have it in the library, so I think I'll take it as soon as possible.

a friend of mine just got the kubrick boxset... i'll probably have all em watched within a week or two... i'm so excited for the rest of lolita and barry lyndon.

Hmmm...yes, so am I. I really try to watch Barry Lyndon, The Killing, Paths of Glory and Killer's Kiss within this week!
Lolita and those to rewatch (Eyes Wide Shut, 2001, Dr. Strangelove) for next week...

Here's the order I'd pick them. A Clockwork Orange, 2001:A Space Odyssey, Spartacus, Paths Of Glory, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket.
A Clockwork Orange stands out as being my favorite while 2001 through The Shining were a little harder to separate and place in order.
Kirk Douglas has said that Kubrick had wanted to make Paths Of Glory a more commercial movie but that he (Douglas) fought to get the movie we ended up with.
The Shining was remade for TV a few years back. Despite what Stephen King says, I strongly favor the Kubrick version.

After having read King's novel, I can, to some degree, understand why he doesn't like Kubrick's version. But I think that the film is an interesting additional interpretation to the novel.
