  • Gravity - Our Lady Peace
Not quite as good as some of there previous work but I think it will grow on me if I listen to it enough. I guess the trick will be listening to it enough for that to actually happen.
  • In Violet Light - The Tragically Hip
I found this to be a lot like almost all the other Hip albums. There are four or five songs that you know from the first listen are great, but it will take a while for the rest of the album to grow on you. Recommended if you are a Hip fan but if you are just starting out find a copy of Phantom Power by far their best.
  • c'mon c'mon - Sheryl Crow
My wife bought this one for the single soak up the sun. I think this is the best album of Ms Crow's that I have heard, but that does not really say much the only other album of hers we have is The Globe Sessions.
  • Hard Candy - Counting Crows
My sister-in-law is absolutely mp3 crazy. She has a huge amount of mp3s and tries to get as many full albums as she can. I think she has raided the CD collection of everyone of her friends and ripped them in entirety onto her her computer. I have no idea how she listens to it all, or even if she does. How this all relates to this CD (Hard Candy and the Ron Sexsmith below) is that every now and then she mails my wife and I a CD or two full of freshly acquired albums that she believes that we will like. Mostly we just listen to these in MP3 format when at the computer but occasionally If we like something enough will will burn it into audio format for more portable listening. Hard Candy is one such album and in my opinion the best work from the Counting Crows since August and Everything After. I was not really all that impressed with the albums in between, but I think this one will end up getting more time in the CD tray.
  • Ron Sexsmith - Ron Sexsmith
As inferred above this is another CD burned from my sister-in-law's collection. It is a very good album that I quite enjoy. Sexsmith has wonderful songwriting ability. My only complaint here is either the ripping or the burning process put a few blips into some of the songs which I did not notice the first few listens at the computer. This is the danger of not paying for my music I guess. I think I may have to put this one onto a Christmas or birthday list, until then I will just have to learn to enjoy the blips.
  • Palace of Gold - Blue Rodeo
Blue Rodeo without a doubt my wifes all time favourite band. With the purchase of this album. We have all but their greatest hits CD. (Though the double live Just Like a Vacation is another of the burned CD's in our library). Blue Rodeo is also tied for first as the musical group I have most often seen live (Great Big Sea would be the other). Suffice to say that this album was purchased the day we heard that it was in stores even though we had said we were going to cut out our CD purchases until after we figure out our fiances now that we bought a new house. Plus it was even more then our traditional rule of not buying a CD until the price drops below $15cdn before taxes. I guess favourite bands break all the rules. Palace of Gold sounds great and any fan will definitely enjoy it but it is not the album to start with if you are just starting out with the band. Go with Lost Together or Five Days in July instead.
  • A New Day at Midnight - David Gray
David Gray is my wifes current favourite singer. Last Christmas she got a copy of White Ladder and by the end of March she had all but his Albums except The EP's 92-94. So the other day when I had a few minutes to kill between getting a hair cut and arriving at my job interview I stopped by the music store that is in the same mall as the barber shop. As I was browsing through the CD's with no real intent to buy anything the CD currently playing in the store was sounding quite good. So I went to check out what it was and low and behold David Gray had a new CD out. Now I haven't bought my wife a present in a while and we did just finish moving into our new house last weekend, so I thought hell she deserves a nice house warming gift so I picked it up and bought it. After just a few listens we both think it sounds like a very good CD. Not quite as good as White Ladder or Lost Songs (my wifes favourite) but none the less a good addition.
  • Maybe This Christmas - Various
This is an alright Christmas album. I really liked some of the renditions of the songs but others while good were not really great. My favourites were Ron Sexsmith's Maybe This Christmas, Jack Johnson's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and of course the best track is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan, but that one was also on the album Christmas Songs[2000] we got last year (a much better compilation in my opinion).
  • Sleepy Eyed - Buffalo Tom
  • Duncan Sheik - Duncan Sheik
  • Daylight - Duncan Sheik
  • Ten New Songs - Leonard Cohen
  • One All - Neil Finn
  • Way To Blue, An Introduction To Nick Drake - Nick Drake
Author Comments:

90% of the CDs bought in our house are by my wife, but we have similar enough taste in music that it works okay for me. Actually before I met my her I don't think I bought any CDs, tapes or records.

A new batch of Christmas CDs I will post my thoughts soon

re: our lady peace... i agree with your comments about taking multiple listens--that is something i've found with all the albums by that band. they're also a band that i would say i like, but i couldn't really sing along or anything. a strange phenom...
