Comments welcomed.

While I personally don't agree that it's the best album ever, I do agree that it's very, very good.

Albums of somewhat similar type I feel are superior are:

Astral Weeks-Van Morrison
Highway 61 Revisited-Bob Dylan

My ratings would probably go something like this for Born To Run:

Thunder Road: 9.75/10
Tenth Avenue Freeze Out: 9/10
Night: 9.25/10
Backstreets: 9/10
Born To Run: 9.75/10
She's The One: 8.75/10
Meeting Across The River: 8.25/10
Jungleland: 9.25/10

SONGS = 91.875

plus,

Track Continuity/Pacing: 9.25/10
Ingenuity: 13.5/20
Depth: 24/30
Artistic Conviction: 38/40

=84.75

91.25 + 84.75 = 176 divided by 2 = 8.8 overall rating

as opposed to Astral Weeks which I'd give:

Astral Weeks: 9.75/10
Beside You: 10/10
Sweet Thing: 9.5/10
Cypress Avenue: 10/10
The Way Young Lovers Do: 9.25/10
Madame George: 9.75/10
Ballerina: 9.75/10
Slim Slow Slider: 9.5/10

SONGS = 96.875

Track Continuity/Pacing: 10/10
Ingenuity: 20/20
Depth: 30/30
Artistic Conviction: 40/40

= 100

196.875 divided by 2 = 9.84375...probably the greatest rock album ever made. 400 listens on and it remains absolutely miraculous and stunning.

Bruce Springsteen was heavily influenced by Van Morrison, especially during his peak, so I think you oughtta give Astral Weeks a go (if you haven't heard it yet). It is truly amazing. TIP: Very few love it immediately, so give it at least 7 or 8 listens to let it sink in and gain familiarity before judging it. From there, it only becomes better with age.

I also like Highway 61 Revisited, for what it's worth. Another great album.

I've never heard Astral Weeks, but seeing as it seemingly comes so highly reommended, I'll do my best to track it down! 400 listens? That's a lot by anyone's measure.. I've only heard BtR as a whole album about 20 times!

Glad you like BtR though, anyway. As for those additional categories, I'd go:

Track Continuity/Pacing: 9/10
Ingenuity: 18/20
Depth: 30/30
Artistic Conviction: 40/40

So, 97/100 there.

I'm glad you like Born To Run so much. It's always nice to have "that album" to go to when nothing else quite compares.

For me, Born To Run isn't "that album" but it certainly is very, very good.

Let me know later what you think of Astral Weeks, after you've given it enough spins to judge it confidently.
