  • I agree with sljiva that the first cd is the most Progressive House-ish of the 3. At this stage I believe it is slightly beaten by the 3rd cd in quality however. I say at this stage because having only had this album for a very short time the rankings are still fairly uncertain for many songs and are likely to change with time for better or worse. The first probably would be best if it weren't for the presence of Age Of Love (Watch Out For Stella Mix) on the third. The ranking for this song is unquestionnable as I have had it for some time. The second cd is a little worse than the other two but still good, I would have prefered different songs to the Virtualmismo ones though. Overall none of the cds strike me as absolute classics nor the album as a whole but this may change given time.

  • For whatever reason the second Renaissance one is only Mr Digweed. A very rough guide for Sasha and Digweed's sound is the former tends to go for a more Progressive Trance sound while the latter prefers a Progressive House sound. This is shown in Part 2 by the lack of dominance of what one might call straight trance, especially on the first cd. At times it begins to go a bit dark which i like, especially as it is Dark Trance rather than the more repetitive Dark House. Dark House is fine compared to the more repetitive Brit House which can get very tedious. Thankfully at this point in his career Digweed does not delve into the highly repetitive sound of Brit House too much and considering the very small amount amount on there I think the album as a whole is pretty good. I do not yet know how much this copies the original but I doubt it will be that similar. Both are meant to be much less Trancey than the Northern Exposure series. Ok I've found out there is actually a genre for a lot of these songs wich sound both Trancey and Housey, its called Deep Trance. And its good.

  • Possibly my favourite album of all time. Certainly in Trance anyway. The first cd is maybe the stronger of the two, being the best fitting ambient trance/breaks collection of tracks I've ever seen, but the entire thing is undoubtably a masterpiece. No Brit House on here thank god, although a very small Dark House presence with Pete Lazonby but its certainly the best Dark House I've ever heard. They've even managed to fit some Psytrance in here with Dusk :P . It's just so wow how they manged to cram all these elements and fit them together so seamlessly. Of course it can be argued that they've mixed seamlessly with a lot of their stuff but it's not hard to mix highly repetitive Brit House with yet more highly repetitive Brit House. This album represents the duo at the peak of their careers, certainly for Digweed at least. Some of my favourite Classic Trance songs on here as well such as Heliopolis and East.

  • Progressive whatever seems to be the main theme of most Sasha and Digweed works. However, other genres are usually present and most albums tend to have what I would call the 'main' other genre. For Renaissance Part 2 it was Deep Trance, for NE it was Ambient Trance and for this it is the presence of Breakbeat especially Ambient Breaks. In fact, around half of the first cd is Ambient Breaks and I'm not complaining. A nice start to the second CD with Positron but a slight dip with Humate, Dark House and not that great stuff, I usually expect better from Dark Trance than Dark House. In the context of the album it works I suppose, but it is one of the reasons why I prefer cd 1. It isn't so bad that i would skip it when listening but I certainly would not listen to it on its own. A lot of the second cd is Dark Trance and most is good and then you've got Panfried which injects the album with some Acid which can never go wrong. The second cd certainly improves as it goes on but I think it could have had better choices for Humate and Sven Vath. Cd 1 on its own is masterpiece worthy and cd 2 is just about so the album as a whole I would say is a masterpiece.

  • Northern Exposure: Expeditions (Sasha/Digweed) [Progressive Trance/Acid Techno/Dark Trance/Classic Trance/Deep Trance/Progressive House/Anthem Trance] {1999}
  • Once again the first cd is better than the second. Though to be fair I haven't listened to the second cd as much. Most of it is Progressive Trance or Dark Trance. With Union Jack using the same Acid as Acid Eiffel I suppose this is bordering on being Acid Techno rather than Acid Trance. Anyway its all good. The vocals in Silence (Sanctuary Mix) help to prevent the dark feeling in the song becoming too repetitive which I like. Vocal songs are being used more on this album than the previous NEs especially NE2 but I don't think they disturb the overall feeling of the Northern Exposure style. Blue Planet Corporation could be a little less dark but it works fine and the cd finishes with another reasonable vocal song. The second cd starts with a lot of average-ish Progressive Trance songs but the songs of the styles later in the cd are good and so the overall mood of the cd is to my liking. Although this album is good one can see the direction Sasha and even more so Digweed are heading. I don't know whether the rumours are true but apparently Sasha makes the track selection for the first cd and Digweed for the second. Although there is no concrete evidence for this I would not be surprised. Listening to the second cds it can be realised that they are more repetitive Progreesive Tranceones than on the first cd. Sasha tends to leave his subgenre (Progressive Trance/House) to try out other sounds more and this seems to be the case with the first cds of Northern Exposure series. Also from the individual work the two have done I tend to prefer Sasha's which correlates to these albums if the rumours are true. Don't get me wrong I like both artists (their 90s stuff anyway) a lot but i prefer the way Sasha likes to try new things. That is the reason why Oliver Lieb is possibly my favourite producer, he has so many aliases and delves into so many different sounds that it is hard to say what genre he belongs to. Most would say trance but there is so much techno sounding music he has done that I believe it is highly debatable. Anyway, I've rambled.

  • The reason why I was more sure NE was the peak of Digweed's career and not neccessarily Sasha's is this single. Err... masterpiece alert!!! This is an amazing cd, once again showing Sasha's wish for diversification. Each song on this cd is a different subgenre. Ok so Xpander and its edit aren't but stop being picky. Sasha demonstrates with this cd that he is able not only to mix and promote lots of different subgenres but actually to MAKE them as well, and some of the best of their relavent genres. Especially Xpander itself. Oh god do I love Xpander. It may be my favourite Trance song of all time, and that means its even being forgiven for not being Classic Trance. If I was to think of my top 10 trance songs, at least half would be straight or part Classic Trance. Anyway, like I said a masterpiece. There is certainly no question that from here on things just aren't as good from Mr Coe.

  • I was bought this cd by I friend. I wish they'd given me the receipt. I'll start by saying this: even the song that is remixed by James Holden is farely average. The entire album is sooooooo boring. Yeah, i could accept the use of Brit House now and then but seriously more than two thirds of this album is this shocking genre. I don't care that you've got normal Progressive songs on there, they aren't good ones anyway. If I was being forced at gunpoint to listen to one of the cds I'd listen to the second cd as that is only half Brit House unlike the first one which is ALL Brit House bar one song. The rest of the second cd is average to rubbish Progressive Trance. Do not get this album. Probably the only Sasha/Digweed album I have that I would never listen to. Dunno why I leave it on the computer really. Anyway, when I first got this album I hadn't read Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music and was left thinking "this isn't the Progressive House I know". His invention of the Brit House genre allows me to label these franky appauling songs. Oh Digweed... Btw for those wondering what his radio show sounds like now, this is it. Don't listen to it if you don't like the sound of a monotonous drone.

  • Ok, scrap the bad review I previously gave Involver, I would now put it above Fundacion NYC as an album, though I still like the latter. This is an album that requires a particular mood to listen to, more so than Fundacion. Although as before I stand by the idea that not all the songs are must have classics, they nearly all fit together in the seamless way we are used to from Sasha productions. The exception being As Cars Go By. This song in fact is probably one of the individual tracks that I would listen to over many others on the album. But it feels out of place given the style of the remainder of the album which is is predominantly Ambient/Progressive Breaks. Were it to include a slightly varied tracklisting I would rate this reasonably highly. As it is, I would still consider this an album worthy of a listen from time to time.

  • Yay! Sasha's back on form. This album I may have considered a masterpiece were it to come out before Nu Electro was the thing to do and before Balance 005. Still the man has impeccable track selection and this is no exception (I suppose Involver was an exception, meh). At least he's got onto the Neo Trance/Nu Electro bandwagon rather than stay firmly rooted in Trance like oh I don't know a certain Mr Verwest. Nor diversified into one of the worst forms of House like his good friend John. The first song is probably made specifically for the Mix, another technique I like which is employed by Holden every so often. I suppose it was predictable Sasha was heading towards this scene with the inclusion of a Petter song on Involver, even if that particular one wasn't really Neo Trance. But like I said, predictable but not unwelcomed! I got given this cd at the same time as GU19. Needless to say which I have listened to more.

Bear in mind the average score for the songs on the album does not represent the ranking of the album as a whole. I'll probably do a seperate score for that at some point, which takes the individual song rankings into account.

Renaissance - The Mix Collection is pure perfection. Especially first cd. The best collection of progressive house tunes on one place. Listen to it, you won't regret any second of your free time.

Seeing the track listing makes me want the album to finish even more. I believe it could possibly be pure perfection considering the presence of Sasha. Whether I'll like it more than Northern Exposure is questionable. NE has Ambient Trance which I love, and Progressive Trance which I generally prefer to Progressive House. Strange considering as entire genres I prefer House to Trance i suppose. Anyway, I'm sure I won't regret it and I may well consider it a classic.

I never understood what's the big fuss about Watching Cars Go By. Seems like everybody love it, and even you gave it 8.5. What's so good about it??
On the other hand Dorset Perception is pure bliss. I would give it at least 9.5, maybe even 10. It's my favourite Shpongle track, along with Beija Flor.

Personally, I believe Watching Cars Go By is mainstream accessible, for one reason: Guitars. Mainstream loves guitars. I love the tune, myself.

I wonder why you didn't give These Days and the UNKLE track the same rating? UNKLE's tune is These Days plus words.

Hmm I just couldn't really give them the same rating. I haven't heard the original mix of What Are You To Me, apparently its only a bridge track. All the actual song is are the vocals. I'm therefore gonna be picky and knock off 0.5 cos strictly speaking it is still These Days playing, with the vocals. It still gets 8.5 which is very good and does sound good with the vocals. Incidently, Petter- These Days gets a 9.5 in its orginal mix but this mix isn't quite as good.

Actually I dont' know what i was thinking giving Dorset Perception a 7.5! I love the inclusion of Spanish guitar and its so funky i wanna get up and dance. Though I wouldn't give it a 10 lol. 8.5 more like, very good but not a classic. I don't give 10s anyway, the closest thing in Trance to a 10 is Xpander and even that isn't perfection. As for Watching Cars Go By that is too funky to be anything below an 8.5! Not a classic but again very good. More House than Trance really but could be put under either.

NE1 = pure perfection.
They'll never equal it, noone else will equal or surpass it, and none before equal it or even come close. Yes, Renaissance is good, but NE is revolutionary.

And you own NE? Like, on a CD?

I wish! Sorry the title is probably a bit misleading. The ones I own on CD are Sasha - Involver, Fundacion NYC & Global Underground 009, John Digweed - Global Underground 019 and Sasha & Digweed - Renaissance: The Mix Collection (10th Anniversary Edition). I wish they'd released a 10th anniversary edition of NE so that there was an affordable copy available for purchase. I haven't actually updated this list in a while. Other ones I have which are not on this list (though not on CD) are John Digweed - Bedrock & Sasha - Airdrawndagger.

Probably the hardest to find CD that I own is Spicelab - A Day On Our Planet which my brother got me for my birthday but I don't think he found it that hard to track down though I know some have trouble finding it.
