i Recently saw Sideways, it has to be up there on 2004 list! its an amazing movie, its one of only few movies that made me want more after it had finished.

It is, just second to Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby which is even better. I'm glad to see that you enjoyed Sideways. Alexander Payne is indeed an interesting director. About Schmidt is also quite good.

yeah saw About Schmidt about 2 years ago and agree that is also very good. i thought that i would like sideways, but never knew i would like it as much as i did. Broken Flowers is on my too see list , mainly because of its quirky outline and bill murray, might buy the DVD from usa.

Yeah, I remember seeing Sideways in the theatre and laughing a lot. But somehow I was the only one to laugh. The zombies around me had apparently no humour, or had expected a movie about the new Merlot...

As for Broken Flowers, I just want to make you aware of the fact that it was directed by Jim Jarmusch (who also made Coffee and Cigarettes which you didn't like, if I remember well). I cannot tell you whether the two movies are similar, as I haven't seen C&C. But Jarmusch is Jarmusch. Moreover I tend to overrate it. Most people here around and elsewhere don't share my enthusiasm. So, not that you spend money for some movie you don't like. (On the other hand, it is Bill Murray at his best, IMO.)

How come there is Se7en, The Game, and Alien3, but not Fight Club, although you had room in the 1999 section? Didn't like it?

No, I didn't particularly like Fight Club. I prefer the other Fincher-films. Do you like it?

I love it, as you can see here :-)
It's not my favorite anymore (that changes every other day, hard to keep my list up-to-date), but I still think it's great. I love Fincher, the actors, the script,.. Se7en is really good, too.

I love your placement of C.R.A.Z.Y., an excellent film that no one saw.

Yes, indeed. A terrific film. Fortunately, it had a rather wide release here in continental Europe (at least, around France).

Babel, seems to be popping up on everybody's lists, i guess i should see it ?

No, not "should", but MUST see it. ;)

hahah fair enough :)

Great list !
I could never do a list like this because I doubt if I get to see 10 (new) movies a year. Mostly I just catch them on TV or satellite.
Two movies I would have included on my list (if I had one) but missing from yours would be:
Aliens (James Cameron - 1986)
The Outsiders (Francis Ford Copoola - 1986).

Ahh, professor, I haven't seen you here in quite a while. How are things?

As for Aliens, it was originally among the 1986-list, but was kicked out lately. The other one, I still haven't seen it.

The Outsiders (1983) is a must-see (IMHO), and quite possibly my all-time favourite movie (from any year). Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the cast list is amazing, the photography is fabulous, the story you'll love (compare it perhaps with Rebel Without A Cause) based on the great novel by S.E.Hinton, and the theme song by Stevie Wonder "Stay Gold" is so beautiful it should have won the Oscar. (My apologies - it should be 1983 - not 1986.)

Cast list includes: Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, (singer) Tom Waits, Sofia Coppola (daughter of the director, as the "little girl", probably about 12 years old at the time, later herself to become a director "Lost In Translation"), and novelist S.E. Hinton in a cameo role as "the nurse".

Just last night there was another of my favourite movies on late-night TV: Drugstore Cowboy (1989) also starring Matt Dillon, directed by Gus Van Sant, which might also deserve consideration on your list.

I've finished my contract in Glasgow (a week ago) so I'm working back at home now and I'll be around here a little more often.

wow children of men picks departed at the post, so thoughts on children of men?. i like both, fantastic films. woo i watched casino last night, my grade is within my movies seen list

How about Gone With The Wind or The Wizard of Oz for 1939 or presumably you've not seen those yet.

Actually, the list is not finished yet. 1940 and earlier still need to be completed. Both of the films you mentioned will be in there, but only behind John Ford's Stagecoach.

Last Year At Marienbad, huh? I could NOT get through that one. I had looked forward to it for years and I just thought it was a huge letdown. Good to see The Descent, Saw, Oldboy and both versions of The Vanishing on your list. Did you not like Funny Games "revisited"? I rate them both about the same. THere are a lot of nice ones on here. Never been a fan of Jarmusch or Allen (and you seem to have listed their entire filmographies here), but there are quite a few that I still need to see myself. Nice list. I have a list just like this - check it out.
