Author Comments:

Started rating all the movies I saw starting with Sept. 1st... the good ones(rated over 60) make the list, the rest don't.

100 = Perfection
99-90 = Masterpiece
89-80 = Great
79-70 = Very Good
69-60 = Good

I don't think you have particularly weird taste. I applaud many of your selections, and I have great taste :-D I'm not as big a Sergio Leone fan as you, but your numbers 1 and 2 are both great movies - 2 is probably under-appreciated as gangster movies go.

as far as i'm concerned the only leone movie that gets it's due respect is the good the bad and the ugly... other than that they are all underappreciated... once upon a time in the west is coming around though... and i'm glad i could get an aplaud from someone with great taste

you have a great taste in movies. nice too see snother Wes Anderson fan.

and i've never even seen rushmore... anxious tho

Ooooh! The Green Berets, the 'Nam movie liberals love to hate. Did you notice that at the end the sun is setting in the east?

no i didn't... but i did love the movie... it's the only nam movie that really seamed to be about nam and not overdone with anti-war bologna... it's really a shame... it's a pretty good movie... and not exactly pro-war or gung-ho.

apparently there are evergreens in nam too... well in the movie anyway.

The evergreens were no doubt a mistake, but I think the sun setting in the east was quite deliberate - a bit of political imagery.

never really even thought about it... though it makes sense.

Oh, I see you are a fan of Sergio Leone. Once Upon a Time in America is great.

saw high noon again... What a film! had to rearrange some stuff near the top.

Finally enough films to start sorting them by year as well.

Great list. My personal favorite Leone film is Once Upon A Time In The West, with the rest close behind. I like the name "Once Upon A Time... The Revolution" better then "Duck You Sucker" too.

as did leone... it's the english title he supposedly preferred... glad you like the list

It's good to see Take the Money and Run up that high. "After fifteen minutes I wanted to marry her, and after half an hour I completely gave up the idea of stealing her purse."

oh i love it... definitly the funniest movie i've ever seen... "It's not that virgil couldn't be trusted... he... well... just lied a lot... in fact just about everything he said was a lie"

off the top of my head of course^

Wow, methinks you enjoyed Diggstown much more than I did, though I did admire the ending...

I love it... james woods is always great... the con on top of con on top of hustle that the final fight turns out to be is just great... and the boxing action ain't that bad.

Major spoiler, as much as I enjoyed the movie, I really didn't think there was much of a con. Lou Gosset just beats everybody. I kept waiting for the twist that never came. Sure, there's the prison fighter, but there's no way Woods could have known Dern would pick that guy to fight, so the idea that he would have hinged his whole plan on that is just plain crazy. Still liked it though.

well obviously they thought they had won the match... and gosset did just flat out beat about 5 guys... but i think it's pretty obvious that woods thought that the final prison guy was going to be his opponents ace in the whole and probably thought that he would be coming up before because he thought the 9th fight was really the 10th... the fact that woods knew that his opponent was picking from the county and seeing the prison guy fight in prison he must have known he was the best in the county and probably going to be his opponents final chance.

i just saw your list! man that is a work in progress. its got to progress a long way mister. sort it out. conan the barbarian aint a touch on masters of the universe. plus do you even study film. what make you think any of sergio leone films, even though they are great, can touch the supremecy of RAGING BULL. that film is so tight in script, cinematography, performance, editing, sound, character development, camerawork, music!!, direction, casting. its so watertight. watch it and try to defy me you poor excuse for a film fan! challenge me if you dare, or kneel to my great power and knowledge of film. the revolution is here. the king is dead, long live the king!!!!! hahahhahahahahah, c'mon have a go if you think your hard/clever enough

what leone movies are you referring to... because i don't think many would deny that the 4 I have ranked above Raging Bull are right up there with it in the supremecy area... not to mention everything that is so "tight", which it is, in Raging Bull is much tighter in OUATITWest, and i will take arguments on anything BUT the music, the rest is just a matter of opinion.

Mr. chum, I can just agree with you. Raging Bull is certainly an excellent film, but OUATITW and OUATIA are just better. Take the acting performances for instance. DeNiro was great in Raging Bull, yet he was even better in OUATIA. And BTW DeNiro (in Raging Bull) was not as great as Henry Fonda in OUATITW.
P.S.: I see you liked Million Dollar Baby by Clint Eastwood? Why?

First off all i've been a huge eastwood fan as an actor since i've seen the dollars trilogy and as a director since i've seen the outlaw josey wales... the problem is prior to the 90's for every good movie he directed, he directed 3 shitty ones... but that's beside the point, I don't know if i can explain why i loved million dollar baby, I am a sucker for an underdog sports movie, and at the same time i'm a sucker for a tragic ending, but i've never seen the two put together before so beautifully... Basically eastwood is an amazing director, and he finally got his hands on a top notch script... don't get me wrong mystic river was great, but it wasn't quite as solid... basically the only difference between the two is the script though, the other strengths are almost identical... i know you probably here this alot... but eastwood is one of the most realistic directors i've ever seen, and at the same time he makes the movie interesting, one of the few directors who can genuinely make you feel like your not even in the theatre, like your watching a documentary or something... of course the acting helps.

James Woods is tons of fun in the film.

I think you have excellent taste. and it seems you put a lot of thought and effort into this list. It's a very good one.

hey thanks... you have some great ones too... i love your incredibly specific top 10 lists and such.

i definitly never thought when i started that i could find 50 movies that i could deem worthy of masterpiece status... so either i'm soft or there are a lot more masterful movies out there than i expected.

i too really enjoyed Reality Bites, a good film from stiller though i disagree with the ending, that was stupid. Stiller should of got the girl ;-)

haha... i agree... although i'll admit to never having seen the end, i knew the outcome before I watched the movie, and although i wished stiller got the girl, i don't think it took away from the movie knowing he didn't

lol Hawk's character was an A*%hole though, Ben was nice and put up with hawks rubbish. he was to conifident, i couldn't get into his character, i couldn't feel sorry for him, but Ben on the other hand :(

i don't disagree, i just think the ending worked... "reality bites"

lol True.

wow... I officially saw 312 movies that I enjoyed watching in one calender year... 365 days, 312 different movies I enjoyed... fantastic.

Nice to see Saving Silverman get a 77, very funny movie.

indeed, steve zahn and jack black playing neil diamond enthusiasts... does it get better?
