Have you read other Pratchett? If you like The Fifth Elephant you'll probably also like Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, and Jingo. Based on your liking PKD's short stories, have you tried Alfred Bester's Virtual Unrealities? Finally, Owen Meany is the only John Irving that's really stuck with me. Nice list!

Pratchett and McMurtry are my two favorite authors right now. I've read every Diskworld book except the Maurice/Rodents book that just came out. Have you read it? Even though it's supposed to be a kid's book, I'm sure it's good if it's Pratchett. For a while, Pratchett books were coming out months later here than in England. I'd take a road trip to Toronto to get them. Now it's pretty much simultaneous.

Haven't read the Bester book. I'll look it up. Thanks for the suggestion!

Owen Meany, I'love. I've tried a few others (including Garp) and I agree, just didn't have the same effect on me.

I've read a good number of the Discworld books, but not as many as you. I favor the "Watch" books, and the "Death" books generally. The "Witches" books are pretty good too. Don't generally care for the "Rincewind" books. I haven't read the Maurice/Rodents book, but I'm sure I will!

Maurice was fun :) I don't necessarily see how it was any more meant for kids than the rest of them, but perhaps it was just a lack of oblique references to prostitutes and drinking and so on :)

Thanks for the info! I don't know if I could do without oblique references to prostitutes and drinking though. I assume they don't sing the Hedgehog song. ;) I've seen on your profile that you've pretty much read everything under the sun. I admire your love of the written word.
