My comments on Penny's 50 more specific things to eat or drink before you die

  • What I've tried:
  • Quiche
  • Banana bread
  • Sour cream and onion potato chips - mmmm... I'd forgotten about these. They don't really have this flavour in the UK!
  • Reuben sandwich - yum! Coincidentally, I was just researching corned beef on the internet today.
  • Chocolate souffle - meh. I'm not a massive chocolate eater.
  • Fettucine alfredo - meh. Give me gnocchi al gorgonzola over fettucine alfredo any day of the week.
  • Marzipan - ew!
  • Peanut butter cookies - as they're about the easiest cookie in the world to make, there's no excuse not to try these.
  • Sushi - ohhhh, my beloved sushi. How I miss thee!
  • Belgian waffles - with fruit topping. Sinfully good.
  • Roasted lamb chops - I had some roast leg of lamb just this weekend. Try it with a bit of anchovies, fresh rosemary sprigs and some slivers of garlic stuffed into little slits you poke randomly around it. The anchovies sound weird, but just add a nice savouriness.
  • Vanilla custard - the English love of drowning their desserts in custard is kind of putting me off the stuff.
  • Bartlett pear
  • Roast duck - Hoa yeah.
  • Lemonade - I assume you mean North American style, and not just Sprite, as it is here in Europe. Minute Maid is the best!
  • Mango
  • Gratin dauphinoise
  • Egg-drop soup - seriously. I often finish a lot of my Chinese soups with a scrambled egg.
  • Shepherd's pie - just, no. Boring.
  • Clam chowder - the red or the white? I like the white.
  • Samosa
  • Smoked salmon - you kidding me? I'm from Vancouver - the stuff is issued to you at birth.
  • Cajun coconut shrimp - *smiles at memory of a wonderful meal on a near-perfect weekend*
  • Chai - nice, but it's tea at the end of the day.
  • Roast beef with horseradish - meh.
  • King crab legs - half the fun is cracking the suckers.
  • Tiramasu - heaven.
  • Salt-water taffee (preferably peppermint)
  • Bread pudding - this is nice. One of the few English desserts that doesn't give me Adult Onset Diabetes.
  • Kalamata olives stuffed with feta cheese - or just plain. Mmmmm, olives.
  • Cinnamon-baked apples - the ultimate comfort food.
  • Asparagus - One of my favourites.
  • Champagne - Essential at least once in any life. The quintessential symbol of good times.
  • Gulab jamum - one of the few Asian foods I've tried and not been all that fond of.
  • Haven't tried:
  • Doro wat - I'll keep an eye out for this, or maybe google the recipe.
  • Gang keow wahn - Don't know what this is.
  • Rugelach - I've heard of it.
  • Chess pie - what the hell?
  • Cocoa with a dash of Fontainebleau - Interesting. I may give it a go.
  • Schaumtorte - according to the internet, it's a strawberry and ice cream filled meringue cake. This doesn't really sound all that appealing.
  • Mixed baby green salad with chevre - Sounds lovely.
  • Venison chili - I've had venison, and may have had it in a chili. Venison's nice, but I had it so much growing up.
  • B&J From Russia With Buzz Ice Cream (White Russian mixed with Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz) - this sounds like hell.
  • Slaw dog (hot dog with cole slaw) - Why? Why would you do this to a hot dog?
  • Dr. Pepper with lime - Ooh, I'm intrigued.
  • Palm fruit - Don't know why I haven't tried this. Just fell below my radar, I guess.
  • Beef Wellington - Meat and pastry. I should have tried this by now.
  • Sweet potato souffle - Sounds really nice.
  • Palm fruit - so good we're supposed to try it twice?
  • Scupperning berries - I've never seen these before.
Author Comments:

This is what I've tried of Penny's list. I guess I'm not doing too badly, all things considered. Since I'm on an endless quest to widen my gastronomic horizons, I'm guessing I'll run into the rest of these somewhere in my travels.

Perhaps I should add some comments to my own list to explain mysteries like the (accidentally misspelled) scuppernong, a Native American berry that I think is only found in the southern U.S.

Gnocchi al gorgonzola? Sounds wonderful. I've yet to meet a dish with blue cheese I didn't like.

I take it you had a bad experience with the marzipan?

By the way, I'd love to read your list of culinary suggestions.

Yeah, I looked up "scupperning" on Google, and it corrected me. Still, never heard of them. As I'm a fan of all things berry, though, I'm sure I'll like them. I think my favourite are huckleberries.

Marzipan is something that sounds like it should be wonderful (almond paste? sign me up!), but its execution just doesn't work for me. At all.

Perhaps I'll clone your list, then. I do so love my food, and I'm quite certain I could come up with 50 items. I think the problem would be limiting myself to 50.
