darktremor's list was very helpful in creating this list.

Comments welcomed.

I just can't understand how people can tell which song is which genre.

How do you do it? How do you know it's a normal rock song or an alternative rock song? Or jangle pop? How?

Honestly, I can't always. Often, I look it up on Wikipedia, and assign any songs I hear in the future that are similar to the same genre. And sometimes I still can't decide between, say, rock and alternative rock.

But, I suppose, for the most part it's just one of those things that you figure out over time. Reading a lot about each genre, what instruments are prominent, etc., plays a part too. And indeed, sometimes it's clear whether something is more "aletrnative" or mainstream, hence the difference between rock and alternative rock.

Well, I guess I should try reading something about genres. It'd help

But I'm awful at recognising musical styles and similarities between songs

You've got New Wave on that list, but where's Next Phase, Dance Craze and Anyways?

It's all under 'rock and roll' for me. ;-)

Seriously though, I think that was a very good effort in listing all those genres and sub-genres, when really, I just use a vague description. It's usually just "pop," "rock," and occasionally "classical" for me.

Yeah, well pretty much every song on my computer is tagged as one of these. It was a big effort to try and differentiate a lot of them, I must admit..
