I'll try to update this every Friday.

Of this list, I've only seen Master and Commander, and it was one of the biggest surprises for me in some time. While not great, it's quite good, and I really expected it to suck. I hope you get a chance to catch it!

Yeah, responses from friends (such as you!) have really changed my attitude about the film. I hated the trailer, but I like the cast and director, and I do love a good ship tale (did I mention I read Joseph Conrad's short story Youth last year and loved it?), so I no longer am dreading the film.

Besides, since it is up for best picture, I know I'm gonna have to see it any way. At least now, I'm looking forward to it!

PS - Over the last few days, I've ceased to receive emails when many of my lists have been commented on. Not a big deal, but I know you'd want to know.

Oh, yeah, I was going to say something about that, too. I signed up for the one email a day thing for new content when I went on vacation, and I *think* I'm still signed up for it. I haven't gotten them the past two days, though.

Hmm, I know those messages (or some of them, at least) were sent because I got bounce messages from the usual crop of people with obsolete e-mail addresses in the system. Can anybody out there confirm that they got last night's automatic message? LBangs and Geek, definitely drop me a line on Monday if you still haven't gotten anything.

You bet. I'll add that I am signed up so that I usually get an automatic message when somebody comments on my lists. Oddly enough, I think I did get the new Listology content message last night, even though I didn't get the automatic emails. It is the automatic messages I have stopped receiving.

My, I hope that made sense. I'll shoot you an email if this is still the case over the weekend. Thanks!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Gotcha. So, for example, you did not get a message for AJ's post to your "Great Film Challenge" list that starts, "I'd vote for expanding it, personally...", right?

I don't know why that would be. You are still signed up for it, as am I, and I've gotten notifications for posts to my lists today. Weird! I hope it fixes itself, 'cause my first impression is bafflement. :-) Definitely let me know if the problem persists! I'm hoping for some random mail relay delay along the line.

That's correct. I'll keep you posted. My email account could always be the culprit as well.

Does the OSU have a film school or venue that shows the good stuff? My parents are in Lincoln, NE and UNL has a great theatre where they saw The Cooler this weekend, and are going to see The Fog of War pretty soon. They decided against The Triplets of Belleville (too busy), but it showed there (and probably nowhere else in Lincoln).

D'oh! I misread the title to your post. I thought it was the "Wish" category, not the "actually showing". Sorry.

No problem. OSU does have a satellite campus here in Tulsa, but it does not have a theater, only a once a month program that shows films on DVD.

We did have a one-screen art theater for about a year, but Tulsa's been hit by incredibly hard times, and it closed around two months ago... :(

Spider-man 2? Really? You aren't plunging into masochism, are you? (knowing how you feel about the original n' all)

Ah, it is simply shaping up to be one of those films I have to see. Everybody around town seems to want to talk with me about it, and I am mute on the subject. For a buck, surely it won't hurt too much. Besides, I hear it is even more stylized and over-the-top than the first one, which I suspect might actually help it. Part of my problem with the original was the (to my eyes) uncomfortable swings between realism and silliness, and an all-out melodramatic mood might solve that.

Or, I might just hate it. With the films above it on the list, I might not even get the chance to catch it!

I only have a so-so feeling about Ray too...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Well, as much as I enjoy your rants I'll still hope you enjoy it if you get a chance to see it. :-)

I don't. I want another rant. No offense, lbangs. :-)

Oh, dear. I shudder to think what a rant from me in my mood would look like.

I was pretty chipper when I wrote that Chicago piece...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Did you guys ever get Primer? Of course, it never made it to New Orleans. Also, dollar theatres are cool (there used to be one three blocks from where I now live); too bad the last one around here closed five years ago. Enjoy them while you've got 'em.

Unfortunately, it sneaked by me on a week I could not catch it. It looks like DVD for this one!

I love dollar theaters. My parents recently moved to Louisiana, and they bemoan the lack of buck movies there. I feel for you!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Just received an email - both Kinsey and The Machinist arrive here Friday.

Groovy.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Whoops! I actually did see La Dolce Vita, but somehow I forgot to review it!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Why do you want to see Birth?

I find it interesting that Birth is expanding. Why now, I wonder?

I guess I find the plot ideas intriguing, and I know a few people who nominated it to my attention.

I can't recall; have you seen it?

I wonder if there is a bit of a belated push behind Kidman for the Oscar race... I went to see this film a few weeks ago, and it had left the theater overnight (on a Thursday night at that!). Now, it is back.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I guess you're right.

I haven't seen it, but I've been thinking I should.

We'll see if I get around to it. As you can tell, there are at least two other films here I'd rather see first, and I have a few other plans this week as well.

If you see it, be sure to let me know your thoughts!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

YAY! Ghandi.

The theater is showing the film on Sunday, but on Saturday, they are going to show it with an Indian food buffet, and they will donate all proceeds to tsunami relief. I really hope I can make it Saturday, but I might have to settle for Sunday... :(

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

What is Mondovino? I may be butchering a foreign language, but does it translate "World of Wine" or something?

Johnny Waco

Your translation is correct. The film is a documentary of the European wine industry, with special attention to the business side and the effect of the booming California industry on the Continent. It is only showing Tuesday night, so I'll report back if I get to catch it.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

That sounds pretty interesting; I wonder if the success of Sideways helped this film get a theatrical release (no matter how small)?

Johnny Waco

I hear Sideways had much to do with the distribution the doc has received. Sadly, I am a liar. I will not be seeing this film tonight, as my VCR does not record, and I cannot miss the season finale of Gilmore Girls.

Alas...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Did you like La Dolce Vita? (I really hope so, as I somehow feel on lonely post, when I tell that I admire this movie so much).

P.S.: Just saw Batman Begins yesterday, and it definetly lives up to the anticipations. I'm looking forward to your thoughts about it (and I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.)

I like La Dolce Vita, especially on the big screen (which actually makes a big =giggle= difference with this film), but I don't go ga-ga over it the way some critics do. I greatly, greatly prefer 8 1/2, but still, it is a good film.

I am anticipating Batman Begins, though I am not expecting any miracles. I am not a fan of any of the film versions of Batman so far, not even the Burton film of the 80s (which started well yet refused to die), so it wouldn't take much to be my fave of the series at this point!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Howl's Moving Castle... is that the new Miyazaki? If so, then it is probably pretty interesting, as Spirited Away was excellent.

Howl's Moving Castle is wonderful!

Agreed!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

That's the one! I dug it.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Yes, and it was quite good, even if it didn't quite equal Spirited Away. Of course, not too many films do...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Ah, gee. I just discovered that there are three indie films I wish to see arriving this Friday. I'm doomed...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I can't wait to see Murderball, "Charlie and the Chocolate" was excellent.

Hopefully, I can catch them both this weekend!

Thanks!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I'll be very curious to read your OldBoy review, if you get to see it. Very polarizing movie, I hear. I just bumped it to the top of my queue, but there's a "short wait".

My review for Oldboy is now posted!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Pride and Prejudice got very positive reviews by critics here around (Luxembourg, Germany, France).
I haven't seen it though, but maybe it could turn out quite interesting.

I know many around here have sniffed at the trailer, but I think it looks terrific!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I might have started the bad press rolling on the trailer (at least 'round here), but I certainly hope I'm wrong!

I trust you will not take offense if I assure you that you were indeed very wrong.

Very, very wrong. The film is incredible and trumps the beloved 1995 BBC version.

Yup, it is that good.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

You trust correctly. I'm psyched to be wrong! I am not going to share the heretical "better that the BBC version" sentiment with my wife though, until after we have a chance to see it. Based on her reaction to the trailer, that would be an automatic credibility-trasher. :-)

You don't want to see the Chronicles of Narnia on opening weekend?

I'm too scared! They've been marketing the film to local churches, and Tulsa has a billion churches (give or take one or two). I suspect opening weekend will be a madhouse, and I am certainly not one to attack even anticipated blockbusters on opening weekend even under sparser conditions!

Me fraid.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I have no choice. If I do not see Narnia this weekend, there will be dire consequences.

You tell me you have seen too many 2005-films, and then you want to see Chicken Little? :)

I don't think it is going to happen. I caught The Matador and Rize, but I now believe I have seen all the films I will venture out to the theater for this week.

Yeah, it probably is pretty bad anyhow...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I'm really glad that didn't get nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. Ya know, back in MY day, EVERY CGI-animated film was good. We didn't have the Chicken Littles, the Madagascars, the Valiants, the Robots...es. Nowadays the three Animated Feature nominees are two claymation movies and one hand-drawn anime film - but I tells ya, I remember the day before it was even possible for a CGI movie to suck.

You're not going to sneak out of reviewing The Matador and Rize, are you?

Of course not! As soon as I nab a second to breath today, I'll try to bash them out, along with my thoughts on Pancho...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

:-) Excellent, I'm quite curious about all three! I particularly hope The Matador lived up to the trailer, which gave me a fair bit of hope.

Oo, good use of the new, non-automated approach to highlighting what's new! It's going to be a struggle for me to remember to use it.

Thanks! We will see how long I can remember to do it! ;)

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Where are you?!

Hey there!

I just ran back into town after an extended vacation! :)

I'm back now, though, and once I whittle down the pile of work that swallowed my desk up whole, I will be round! As a brief update to this list, I plan on watching Brick tonight at the local theater!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Welcome back!! It seems like you were gone forever.

I want to know what you think of Brick.

Thanks!

I'll have to write up the film tomorrow. I've been horribly lazy; I have several I need to review, although none that were noteworthy...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Yes, yes! Welcome back, and definitely curious about Brick! I hope that 24-hour editing embargo (see the home page) doesn't mess with you too much.

I've posted a hurried Brick review.

Thanks! It is good to be back, even if my vacation has left me rather busy catching up here at work!

Shalom, y'all!
