Movie Moments - Romance and Heartbreak

  • Anne of Green Gables
  • Anne: I don’t want diamond sunbursts and marble halls. I just want you.
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • Harry: I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
  • Punch Drunk Love
  • 1) Barry: I have a love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can imagine.
  • 2) Barry: I'm lookin' at your face and I just wanna smash it. I just wanna fuckin' smash it with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. You're so pretty.
  • Lena: I want to chew your face, and I want to scoop out your eyes and I want to eat them and chew them and suck on them.
  • [pause]
  • Barry: OK. This is funny. This is nice.
  • Secretary
  • When E. Edward Grey very gently bathes Lee.
  • Titanic
  • When the ship is going down, and the briefest of scenes shows an old couple holding each other in their bed, waiting to face the end together.
  • High Fidelity
  • Iben Hjejle’s character’s father has died, and she gets in the car on a rainy night with John Cusack’s character. She tells him, “I’m too tired not to be with you right now.” I like this because it’s like that sometimes, where you realize that the person you’re with is comfortable, and comforting, and that’s not a bad thing.
  • Moonstruck
  • Near the end, Cher’s family are all at the breakfast table together, under strained circumstances.
  • Cher’s mother: I want you to stop seeing her.
  • Cher’s father: [Stands up slowly, slams both hands on the table, pauses, then says, “Okay,” and sits down.
  • Cher’s mother: Te amo.
  • Cher’s father: Te amo.

I'm finding this list surprisingly hard to put together. It seems most of my recent and not-so-recent movie viewing, as limited as it is, focuses a lot on horror. Not so much for the romance, those horror films. Even Shaun of the Dead, the Rom-Zom-Com has precious few romantic moments.
