Let me admit that some of the list ideas here are ridiculously ambitious and will never appear. [Yes, ridiculously ambitious, I said. Let that be a lesson: never underestimate ambition.] Others, however, are quite doable. I have already made good progress on A History of World War 2 Told in Movies (Part A: Atlantic Theater) (Part B: Pacific Theater).

Do you mean, a list of movies that already exist and illustrate the history of the world? For example, all the movies about the different wars, in historical order? That would be interesting...
Yes, that's what I mean, and it would certainly be interesting to me.
In fact I just this minute thought of another one that might not be too much work: A History of World War 2 in Movies. I believe I'll add that to this list.
I actually started work on the list A History of the World in Biopics, but it would have taken me more time than I was prepared to devote to it.
It would be fascinating to have two people do A History of World War 2 in Movies and then compare the different choices of movies they made.
The WW2 list could be subdivided into two lists, A: The European Theater and B: The Pacific Theater.
What do you say - are you up for it?
I'm flattered that you've asked, but unfortunately I haven't seen a lot of war movies (it's not one of my favourite genres) and I don't know much about war history... I was thinking that if someone else was to compile the list I could learn more :-) Sorry... but maybe someone else on Listology would be interested?
Can I tempt any of you to do a History of the American Civil War Told in Movies, or will I have to do that one too?
Jim, this list makes me think of a potentially killer Listology feature: Most Requested Lists. Users would submit descriptive titles for lists they'd like to read from a Listology knowledgeable enough with the subject matter to write it. For example, "A History of Science in Movies," "Best Classical Crossover Albums," "Greatest Technology Blunders," etc. Other Listologists could then add votes if they'd also like to see a particular list made, and the page for Most Requested Lists would be ordered by number of votes. Users could also comment on each entry if they find a suitable or similar list on Listology or elsewhere to link to, or if they think the list title needs clarification, etc. The page for comments on an entry could also show a more detailed description of the list ("author comments"). Once a "requested list" is satisfied (the list is written), that entry could be moved to another section of the Most Requested Lists section, or something like that.
There'd be kinks to work out, and implementation would have to be better considered, but I'm just thinking out loud. Is there any interest in this from Jim or the Listology community?
I think that's a terrific idea. Has plenty of potential to produce interesting lists.
For example, how would you like to do A History of Christianity Told in Movies? You seem to have the qualifications for that.
I don't know about "A History of Christianity Told in Movies." I haven't seen many movies about Christianity. And I certainly haven't seen many "Christian" movies... because I've never seen a good one. Maybe I'll do the list if it gets enough votes. :-)
Needless to say, it, and you, have got my vote. But if nobody starts it within, say, a month from now, I claim the right to start constructing it then.
Cool. But couldn't this be accomplished with polls as they stand without making it a dedicated feature? "Lists I Wish Lukeprog Would Make", or "Lists You Wish Existed, Please Contribute!"
Aren't votes cleared on a poll every time you add or edit an entry? And, users wouldn't be able to vote for more than one entry, for example if they wanted to see "A History of Pizza Told in Movies" and "Ten Greatest Scientific Texts Before Principia".
Ugh. Yes.
Even without polls though, isn't this a problem that is easily addressed by discussion? For example, your religion list doesn't seem to have any problems getting off the ground without a dedicated feature. :-)
Maybe I, bertie, or whoever will try something and save you many hours of trying to solve cold fusion!
Bertie, you interested?
Forgive my density, Luke, but I'm not clear on exactly what you're proposing I do. Can you dumb it down for me?
Would you like to maintain a list named something like Most Requested Lists (Please Contribute!)? Users could post their own requested lists (perhaps with a limit per user) or vote on others' recommendations via comments, and the list could be ordered by number of votes. Or something like that. Jim suggested we see if that works rather than have him code a dedicated site feature.
Okay, let's give it a shot. I'll get on it either later today or tomorrow.
A history of the world told in movies
Which is why I try to resist the temptation to go looking for lists on the web.
Upside: Clooney hasn't obviated all my list ideas: he's weak on science. And I think my WW2 lists are better than his. And it looks like his work is merely a list of movies - he provides very little historical detail - I mean less, even, than I do.
Still, it's quite a feat, and I applaud his work.
Each title on the list is a link to more detailed historical information and film comments.
Yes. I was so taken aback and envious of his list that I neglected to check his links. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
Now I don't want to hear any more about his damned excellent list, okay? [better add a smiley face :-]
"A History of the Twentieth Century Told in Movies" Sounds interesting, but how do you mean it? Picking a movie that is about a historical event from each year?
-------------------------------------------------
yocineo, ¿y tú?
It wouldn't absolutely have to be a hundred movies about a hundred years - just the high(and low)lights of the century. And that guy who's first on the list has already done it, but we don't need to even look at how he's done it. Just ignore him :-)
Getting back to this list has got me thinking about additions to it, and one [make that several] just came to me, so thanks for bringing me back here.
