Floating Weeds.
Good movie, but for Ozu I favor Tokyo Story and Late Spring.
I just read the book that Woman in the Dunes is based and and did a search to see if anyone had recommended the movie. I'm going to take this as a yes, I should try to rent it.
How was the book? I need to read it, as I would love to compare it to the film. The author of the novel also wrote the screenplay for the film.
Yes, definitely give the film a viewing. It is a masterpiece. Surreal, sensual, and stylish, the film not only drives home interesting points about Japan's relation to the rest of the world and about fate, but also stands as one of the greatest art house films ever. A neglected classic that more people should be seeing.
I hope you enjoy it! I know it is available on both videotape and DVD, so hopefully you can track down a copy without too much trouble.
