Author Comments:

The are ranked very roughly by preference within each group (favorites are towards the top of each group). Games that I haven't played enough or haven't played in a long time are italicized. Favorites of the moment are bolded.

If you're interested in buying any of these Funagain Games is a wonderful online store. They have *almost* every game I've ever tried to find (I've never really looked for any out-of-print titles there though).

We've bought Apples to Apples (a fantastic game) for both my parents and my wife's parents. Terrific for a crowd! Sadly, I don't have my own copy.

I also bought 25 Words or Less for my parents, and I also enjoyed it.

Your list reminds me - I should probably add Taboo to my other list!

I love Apples to Apples as well. It's best after you've played it for a while and everyone has stopped taking it seriously, so the judge just starts picking the most ridiculous answers.

Oo, Apples to Apples fans! Excellent! Great game. But I'm telling ya guys, check out Time's Up. You'll both love it, I suspect.

Regarding 25 Words or Less, it's another one I really like, but it helps to add a little time pressure to the bartering "how many words can I do it in" phase. Otherwise folks just stand there and try to plan out *exactly* what words they're going to use for each clue. Not that that's inherently bad, it just slows things way down.

Yes, we also found that a timer helps 25 Words along.

We really love Apples. We get quite a large gang going, and Apples is one of those great games that many of the younger kids can play along with the grandparents. Everyone stays happy!

The variation where you choose the best opposite is quite fun as well, as is switching which color of cards you use for you hand and for the 'played' card.

Great game, even if I had to twist arms to get people to play it for the first time. I've found you get more initial takers if you explain the game without using the words 'noun' and 'adjective'! ;)

Ha! Yes, a game of nouns and adjectives would scare me away as well. I've never tried the variations; we'll have to give them a shot next time!

Let me see what I have already played here.

Taboo- That was fun.
Trivial Pursuit- That was fun too.
Boggle- That wasn't. I lose, get a headache, mess up with the other players, and don't talk to them for some hours or days.
Chess- The classic, of course.
Backgammon- That is a game I really want to learn some day, as it isn't played very much here around.
Abalone- See Boggle.
3 Stones- Ditto (I cannot remember having won one single time.)

Conclusion: It's never good to play these games with me. I lose, and then the fun is over.

But say, no Monopoly or Scrabble?

Nope, I don't own either of those. As much as I'd like to enjoy Scrabble, I could never get into it. As for Monopoly, I actually played it a few months ago for the first time in many, many years and I noticed the "auction" clause in the rules (if you land on a property and don't want to buy it then it immediately gets auctioned off). How could I have missed that oh-so-long ago?! I bet it makes the game worlds better than the "you have to land on it to buy it" rule I always played by.

I didn't know that either. I also played it as you did. Good to know. Thanks for telling me.
