Author Comments:

Slightly more difficult than identification by screenshot, I think, especially for older films where the poster doesn't look anything like the actual film.

16 ===> Invasion of the Body Snatcher
2. ===> All quiet on the western Front
5. ===> Casablanca
10. ==> Forbidden Planet

yes, indeed! Say, is ekovacs a friend of yours that you 'converted'?

Oops, lol, you just answered that a second ago on his list's discussion. I was only asking because he had your endorsement so quickly :-)

No, but we have very similar taste, so I see your point.

#7 Cleopatra
#8 Father of the Bride
#9 Flash Gordon
#17 The Ladykillers [original]
#20 Psycho

nice

Okay, peoples! Tell me, which do you prefer: guess movie by screenshot, or guess movie by poster? Apparently, the latter is much more challenging, but perhaps the former is more fun?

I like both, although I suck at poster IDs (I do think #4 is Bridge on the River Kwai, which I coincidentally saw for the first time today - great movie).

Speaking of visual film identifications, have you seen Filmwise?

yeah, with the 'invisibles'? It's amazing how many films use invisibility ideas!

Yup, it's for Bridge on the River Kwai. How did you like the film? That was one I used to always watch when my parents would drag my to grandma's house as a child - I loved it then and still do. Probably my favorite D. Lean film, though I love Brief Encounter as well.

Oh, and they have tons of other visual quizzes as well! How fun!

Well, now i found out that this game IS fun, but that I SUCK at it :-)

Lol! HAHAHAHA. I'd only spent about 5 mins on the site before, now I realize that those shots AREN'T all from movies with invisible people in them, but rather they've Photoshop-ed them out of regular movies :-)

Wow, SO many top-notch games there, they put my to terrible shame! Oh well, I did mine on a smaller budget :-)

:-) Did you find the ones yet where instead of making the people invisible, they Photoshop in Oscar the Grouch? Great stuff. Glad you're enjoying 'em!

Yeah, they have a huge variety of themed visual puzzles!

Liked it a lot, probably even loved it. I understand this, Lawrence of Arabia, and Brief Encounter are Lean's big three. I have yet to see the latter, but I'm looking forward to it.

I majorly screwed up my first viewing of Lawrence of Arabia. It was two tapes, and I put the 'top' one in. I left the screen to grab a snack and came back, figuring I would miss much with the credits (this was years ago). So, when I came back, I didn't realize there had been no credits, because it was the second tape! So, I watched the movie starting half-way through and then came to the end of the tape, and it was the end of the movie, and i was like - d'oh!!!! So I didn't like the film at all because I'd missed the first half.

I've since rewatched it, but I think it'll always be slightly tainted in my mind due to that early mixup! :-)

19. Metropolis?

I like both the screenshot and poster games. They're not mutually exclusive are they.

yes. no.

18- A Lost World

you bet! Have you seen it? I'm getting it from Netflix in the next couple days. I'm intrigued because it came before Metropolis.

Nope. It is all reflected glory. I've read the Conan Doyle book. I really like Ray Harryhausen who was influenced by the film (as well as King Kong.) And I know of it as source material for The Dread Spielberg and the Jurassic Park movies.

There's a great Ray Bradbury short story called "The Prehistoric Producer" (sometimes it's called "Tyrannosaurus Rex") about a stop motion animation artist that led me to his friend Harryhausen and, again obliquely, to "The Lost World." I hope you enjoy it. The film, that is. I believe it cost some insane amount of money to make back then. Willis O'Brien, the James Cameron of his day. Plus ca change....

#3 Battleship Potemkin [?]
#6 Citizen Kane [?]

indeed!

The trouble with doing so well in a game like this is that you begin to worry about being suspected of cheating. So I'm going to explain how I arrived at each of my guesses.

The Battleship Potemkin poster shows what is obviously the mast of a modern ship crowded with figures waving their arms excitedly as if in mutiny.
The male figure on the Citizen Kane poster bears a resemblance to the young Orson Welles, and Kane is involved with two women in the movie.
The Cleopatra poster is easy - a female Egyptian with the obelisks known as 'Cleopatra's Needles' behind her.
I admit that I zoomed in on the Father of the Bride poster. In the top left are the words "The Bride gets the thrills, father gets the bills" - not too hard a guess after that. I hope zooming in isn't considered cheating.
Flash Gordon was as easy as Cleopatra - colliding 30s-style spaceships - Ming the Merciless looking on at the young hero and his girl.
I have a set of four Ealing Studios comedies on dvd. One of them is The Ladykillers and the dvd set actually has a mini-copy of this very poster included (and for the other three movies too).
The Psycho poster was perhaps the easiest. I recognised Janet Leigh and, yes, even Anthony Perkins.

Btw, is #1 El Cid?

How exactly would you 'cheat'? Look through all of allposters.com until you come across the right ones?

Zooming is not cheating. It's detective work.

It was fascinating to hear how you arrived at each conclusion, but you weren't obligated to do so.

Sorry, #1 is not El Cid.

Hints:

1. There is a 2004 release with a similar title to this one.
11. A silent, what many would call a masterpiece.
12. As a young child, I used to confuse this title with 'Ghandi'
13. Come now, what other old movie shows a battle between fighter planes and a giant blimp?
14. remade this year!
15. a silent which also appeared in 'guess movie by screenshot #2'

Let me know: am I giving out hints to early on these games? Should I wait a little longer?

I wouldn't have gotten number 12 (Gunga Din) without your clue and the mention of Rudyard Kipling on the poster. Only you can decide whether that's a good thing or not.

Oh, I left certain pieces of the posters (somewhat) readable so that some detective work was possible, so good job! I think that makes it a little more fun.

Is #12 Dracula?

No, but you'd think so, wouldn't you. It's a very strange poster, really, and not terribly representative of the film, except that the image of a withered hand grabbing at something might be suggestive of [movie title].

With that clue, I'm going to guess the movie is Greed.

yup!

I'm considering providing year of release for the remaining entries due to their apparent difficulty. Good idea/bad idea/wait a little longer?

#15 House of Wax

yay!

I will guess on a couple of the remaining ones. Well I am pretty sure 14 is Hell's Angels with Jean Harlow's blossoming bossom. And I think 16 is Griffith's intolerance at least that is the tagline for his movie.

yes!

oops, sorry, numbering was off. Fixed.

Because it appears no one will get it, here's a hint that makes #1 really easy: it's an Eisenstein film.

And, be sure to check out my new game, which I think is pretty cool (and different).

Alexander Nevsky?

hurray!
