I like The French Connection too. In spite of all the stereotypes, I think it is well-done action. Gene Hackman is cool.
Tonight K-1 shows the sequel by John Frankenheimer which I haven't seen yet.
Oh, and did you watch The Fly?
Basically The French Connection and To Live and Die in L.A. are the two movies from Friedkin I appreciate. Both are slick and engaging, and have good action sequences to boot. The "train chase" I find masterfully done. If you haven't watched To Live and Die in L.A. yet, I think it will be airing on Wednesday on HR, so you can check out the other masterfully done! car chase sequence.
I was out last night and haven't seen The Fly, but I got home at 3 am, and then watched Gummo. Hmmm... I thought it would be a good deal. I see you liked it... probably I would too. ;)
'Don't quite know if I will watch Frankenheimer's movie considering that sequels aren't always "the lively bunch".
OK, thanks for the tip!
HR is one of those channels I only get per satellite, and at the moment I have problemts with it. But I still hope.
The Fly is a great movie. And for Gummo, oh well, I recorded it, as I was too tired after The Fly. But I'm prepared for the worst. :-)
'Hope you catch a good signal. And Gummo... well... it's actually not that bad.
Thematically it reminds me of Larry Clark's Kids which I find great.
It exposes a lot of youth problems which is comparable with the plotline of Kids, and also a diversity of other problems, but... well... it's more bizzare and in my opinion more hearty than Kids.
Pah, no chance with To Live and Die in L.A.. I also wanted to watch Fallen Angels which HR showed before Friedkin's movie...
But at least BR will broadcast Fallen Angels this weekend again.
P.S.: I'm curious about your rating system. Why 7? Why not 10?
Because I was at first shocked when I saw a "5" for Lawrence of Arabia and thought it was out of 10. BTW, 5/7 is still a pretty low rating for such a masterpiece...
Ok, I'll shut up. :)
No, don't shut up. They're actually good questions. The odd rating was concieved as I just cut out some transition grades I always felt were just in the way. Silly as that. And Lawrence... well... in almost every aspect, every category of movie-making it is really good but it just wasn't engaging and gripping for me enough, and I tend to demand this from a grade 6/7, 7/7. And also I don't find 5/7 that much of a lesser grade with also some Fassbinder's movies I handed out 5/7 although I found them brilliant, and a lot of others.
Ah, Ok, thanks for the explanation.
Oh yeah, I taped all the Fassbinder-movies they showed last year, and I haven't yet watched them.
I see The Return up there which I taped too. So in the near or far future, I'll see it, and am glad that you liked it.
And tonight The Red Shoes... and again on tape, as I really don't feel like watching TV till 2:30 AM.
The Return you'll probably find somewhat slow, but more about it when you get there. Basically I stay up late to study and in study breaks I squeeze a movie or two in.
You seem to like 1941 much more than I did.
Yeah, much moore. :) It's a loony comedy I liked a lot in my childhood and 'still haven't shaken off my fondness of it. I like crazy and goofy comedies. ;)
Actually I find this much funnier than the praised Airplane!
Airplane! is one of my absolute favourite comedies. I love the ZAZ-humour. Leslie Nielsen was so funny. And all these memorable quotes! Wonderful.
As you often stay up till late at night, will you watch the Golden Globes- ceremony tonight?
I was never crazy about Airplane!, 'never dug into it's myth. It made me laugh, but it hat much more miss-jokes than the hit-ones for me. I like Naked Gun much more.
Golden Globes? Well, probably not, but if I do, I'll watch it for the jokes (like all other award-giving occasions I watch), 'kinda don't really care who wins. #)
So I stayed up last night and had watched the Globes. Wow, I'm totally unpredictable. :) The first half of it was the funny one. Every shot of goofy Ferrell made me laugh, Jason Lee with "My Name is Earl" look and moustaches looked dopey and funny, Geena Davis had a funny joke, Hugh Laurie had a very funny sketch-speech, and Steve Carell's "Hey, this is good, Nancy" speech was a riot and the funniest thing. Sandra Oh embarrassed herself but in a cute way :), and in the second half the only thing I remembered was that Harrison Ford was tipsy when presenting. :) As I said I watch this shows for the jokes, but still due to it I pushed up some movies and series on my to see list.
Oh yes, Sandra Oh was funny. But I think she deserved her award. I haven't seen her in that role, but I like her (and she was the only member of the Sideways-cast which was overgone last year at many award ceremonies).
In fact, I'm a little disappointed, because it was so incredibly predictable. Brokeback Mountain, Walk the Line, etc., but hey, if these are good movies, then it's fine.
Oh, and I think Ford is always a little "tipsy" when he has to present an award.
Np (bumping my head against the desk), no (bumping again a little harder), NO!!!
How the heck could I miss The Ox-Bow Incident???
OK then. But tell me what do you think of Peeping Tom?
I thought it was a roundabout well told story, and very well directed but I had't still quite "fallen for" the movie in general.
What's the problem with Saw 2?
It has another one in the raw of insipid twists (while the twist from the original I found rather good), a wide buch of lousy characters, implausibilities, and the "Jigsaw fuddles" were unimaginative except for the opening sequance and the "hole". I would forgive the movie a lot of these things if it only was fun, but it wasn't.
I have seen none of the two films, so it wasn't meant to question your low ratings. Your arguments sound excellent.
Ahh, I know that (about questioning). Did my reply sound that abrupt? I didn't wanted that, I never don't want that. ;)
As for Saw, unless you're a "junk flick" addict and 'enjoy camp and likewise, Saw franchise is, I guess, not a way to tread.
Now, 70 is really not a worthy rating for Keaton's The General.
I don't know, for me the grade fits. :) In the first half I was thinking to myself that it was material for the 80s, later it got boring at some spots so I thought of a 75, and then when at the end people died at a joust of a comedy (which I don't like) I left it at 70. I was kinda expecting it to be more funnier. :|
And also I must say that I didn't grade it much from the history/importance aspects, so maybe when I rewatch it the rating will go up.
Well, I can see your point, I think. So, whom do you prefer, Keaton or Chaplin? (Personally, I'd go with Keaton here.)
P.S.: Where are Blue and White?
Keaton is downright funnier, and his movies are among the funniest stuff that graced the screens, but Chaplin has more heartfelting movies and I can't pull out a destinctive favorite here. :)
Blue and White are among the last-summer's-seen movies. Aaaa, summer. ;)
Don't tell me you missed Supervixens on arte! ;)
Yes I did. Missed it, that is.
Did you enjoy it? I mean I saw you gave it a diminutive grade, but did you enjoy it? ;)
Bah, it was awful, awful, awful. These were 115 minutes of wasted time actually. :)
Well it's not called an exploration flick for no reason... wait... how much sense does that make. ;)
Shockingly low ratings for both King Kongs!
Wait, they're typos. Now it is right. These things happen, you know. ;)
Still 'spite the 4/7 that stands, I more-or-so loathed the new one. It was done in a so uncaring manner complete with characters out-of-place, bad acting, and dry uninvolving story. The visual side was ok I guess, but only that does make a movie.
On the other side seeing the original Kong was a treat.
Still not satisfying, but it's at least that. I know that you're stingy with your ratings. :D
P.S.: A day late, but anyway, Happy Birthday! :)
Hey, muchas muchas gracias! How about you come by on some home-made cakes? ;)
Just today I rewatched Airplane!. I love that film. ;)
Zany. But now was that a good enough reason to skip me cookies invitation? ;)
Hey, JayBamBaLam, do you have MSN? If so and if you want to talk, let me know in a Mail. :)
Actually 'never had an account of that sort (nor ICQ, nor MSN...), but I'll tell you if I make a large step as that :). I'll be doing soon a somewhat of a project in that waters so well it's a good chance that I get an account at MSN.
Excellent! Don't forget about letting me know as soon as you have MSN. ;)
Curse you! Because of your huge update, you beat me again. 133 vs. 119.
But I'm glad to see that you enjoyed Fireworks! I taped it. :p
Haha, don't give up, you still have a good chance to catch me if an alien race attacks Earth. ;)
Now 134! That doesn't help it very much. :)
And then American Splendor. I know it was on WDR, and I actually wanted to watch it, but then I forgot. :(
And plus I'm like planning a big pure-enjoyment movie matinee today. You're doomed. :D
I see. 3 movies in 1 day...that really hurts! :)
14/06/06 Tears of the Black Tiger (2000) 4
09/06/06 The Breach (1970) 4
How that? No movies in 4 days? But I'm not better anyway... :D
As I said... foooooootball! ;)
Awww, just a 4 for Shadows? :)
It was really boring in its "experimentalneshisness" and nothing really special.
Oh, you watched Dreyer's Gertrud on arte yesterday! Instead I was in a bar with some friends to watch the football match. :) Viva España!
Correction, watched Gertrud and then had to study. Jay's Big Jolliing Up Football Day = Thursday. ;) Are you seeing that game?
Watched first half of the Furies game, put some money on Torres to score - won that, so I was not much disappointed. :)
Nice to see you're also having a load of good time with the WC. ;)
Nope, I won't see any matches until June, 28, as I'll be in Scotland! :D
Torres did a great match,, sure.
P.S.: Good luck for your exams, I suppose. [And when school is over, you'll have enough time, I hope, to get MSN. ;)]
Than have yerself a braw old time. ;)
Count ye on that MSN.
You'd better get MSN soon, or...no cookies. :)
Ohh, I haven't seen any films since June, 16. :(
Now when you say that I know I should've used to better your absence. :) How was Shhhhcotland?
Shhhhcotland was fantastic, and probably worth skipping some films. And of course World Cup still paralyzes my movie viewing too. And tonight, Italy vs. Germany.
Forza Italia! :)
Well, I'm rooting for the better team; none of the favorites here, not even in the second match. All teams I kinda was rooting for didn't managed to pass. :|
You're seeing the match out or?
I saw most matches at home, jumping around in the living room. ;)
Ahh, I was so happy to see Germany being eliminated yesterday. :)
I would've liked to see Germany win. Sixteen years after Reunification (and their last Cup) I was looking forward to the kind of nationalism a win would have created. It also would have had a good affect on style/tactics.
...and I don't like the way the Azzurri went through the Socceroos.
That's right, but I prefer the Italians to the Germans, because their game generally seems more passionate and also fairer. And lets face it. Italy's victory against Germany was well-deserved.
Well (the part with Socceroos) is as it is now. Australia was better, but Italy got lucky (getting Ukraine in quarterfinals counts as luck too), and referee is to blame. May the better team win in the finals. :)
=)
Yes, =). ?) I'm only a bit sad that it's all over. Oh, well, fun times. ;)
And Le Tour all day.
All italofanatics I see. :)
Oh, the Tour de France, of course. As you probably know, it also passed through Luxembourg. :)
...and Boonen has the yellow.
Oops, I thought it was Giro d'Italia in this time of the year. ×)
Congratulations!
Fränk Schleck is in yellow... just thirty-one short days after doing this.
Assault on Precinct 13, rating down, eh? ;)
Oh, and curse you for seeing so many movies. So far, you are ahead of me by 43 movies... :p
I felt the dialog was so terrible. Brrrr.
I'm pretty sure my "movies seen" ratio will go down in the next two months, so you can still bump me off there. ;)
Please turn numbering back on.
About The Perfume:
At the time I read the unusual and intoxicating novel by Patrick Süskind, I heard about a cinematic adaptation being announced for it. I couldn't imagine how anyone could possibly manage to catch the book's essence in a film, as cinema could never reach an olfactory dimension (except for John Waters' Polyester at the beginning of the 80s, an ephemeral experiment). As the producers declared that they planned to cast Orlando Bloom as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, I was sure that the movie was doomed to fail.
Now, some years later, the film has eventually been released, as an American-German coproduction, and my misgivings were partly justified. First off, it was a clever move by the producers not to cast Mr. Bloom. He would probably have assured the film's success, but he would have been one of the worst miscasts ever. Instead, they rooted for Ben Whishaw, an (at least, to me) unknown actor. While he is not always able to develop all of his character's complex outlines and facets, he does a rather good job. He is assisted by a notable range of remarkable actors, with Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman at the spearhead.
Furthermore, the film cashes in on the sumptuous décor and equipment. Like that, Tykwer catches an interesting, though a bit habitual (except for the beginning) view of Paris, France and its society during 18th century.
The off-commentary by John Hurt is at first a bit bothering, but, once you get used to it, it becomes a nice companion into and through Grenouille's world. At the same time, it prevents any too profound involvement of the spectator into the main character's adventures, which is most probably intended by the director, in order to keep up the novel's esprit. The spectator is not supposed to suffer with Grenouille. He may feel for him, but then it is always a rough mixture of pity and disgust.
Talking of which, the protagonist seems different when compared to the novel's character. He is less fascinating and vibrating, which is not due to deficits in the leading actor's game, but rather a mistake of the screenplay. The middle part, which is in the book a bit tedious, but absolutely necessary to Grenouille's development, has been mostly left out in the film adaptation. Instead, Tykwer arbitrarily stresses some other, often secundary, parts of the story, which eventually gives the impression of a lengthy and overlong flick.
The adaptation completely fails towards the end though. What is, in the book, a critical approach to society and its system of values, just appears laughable and one-dimensional.
The film is ultimately saved from being yet another failed literary adaptation only because of Tykwer's skills to catch the impression of the smells which appear throughout the entire story. Without special effects, he focuses on camera, editing and some other visual aspects, such as colours, etc. While seeing the film, especially during Baldini's segment, you cannot get rid of actually smelling the perfumes and the other olfactory marks.
:)
Wow, fantasicaly written. Could've mistaken you for a real critic here. ;)
Hvala.
Zdravo!
Sada ja živim u Koelnu. :)
Vidimo se.
Woooow, you've learned another one, fantastic! 'Learned just a few words or? And how come in Cologne? ...are the questions that bongle the mind. ;)
:)
Nope, at the moment I am learning Portuguese and Serbian (with the Croatian variations to it).
And I study (and live) now in Cologne.
Anyway, it's good to see you back here.
My questions now:
Is "puff" your new magical word?
How about MSN? :p
Most definitly it's good to see you back here too. Wow, you'll become uber-linguist if you keep this language-acquiring up. Cologne is nice, and people too there, eh?
Puff, magical? Well yes, I felt like changing something, for no apparent reason. ;)
MSN, well, I'm this close *shows a small measure* to it. ;)
Afraid that I might beat you this year? ;)
Afraid? Hahahahaha. How about a small bet this year around? ;)
Oh yes, sure. What should the bet be like? :)
P.S.: May I ask again about those three magical letters? (*M*S*N*) :p
I don't know... how about let's leave it on "a small bet", and later see. :)
I forgot totally about those 3 letters... I'm hopefully getting it among tons of other stuff... keeping fingers crossed. ?)
"A small bet", sounds good.
As for MSN, it's very easy actually. If you use Windows, MSN should be installed on your PC already. Then all you need is an e-mail account with hotmail, yahoo or gmail (all free). ;) But I keep my fingers crossed anyway.
I'll do this soon, I must I promised... ;)
