RosieCotton's Scoreboard 2006

Re: 27: [*****] /Casablanca/ (Curtiz, 1942) [would get ten stars]
Exactly. It is amazing that, no matter the number of stars, points or thumbs, Casablanca gets the highest mark.

Best movie ever made.

Casablanca is a wonderful movie, no matter how often I watch it.

Haven't seen, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Do the Right Thing or Videodrome, but the grades for them are kinda picking the eyes more then my 70s. :) This will sound so random cause I haven't seen them ;), but, why so tough on them?

First off, I worship Cassavetes. But The Killing of a Chinese Bookie is the only personal (non-studio) work by Cassavetes I've seen so far that I didn't like. It was lengthy, and even boring at most times. Ben Gazzara is excellent, but he cannot bear the entire film on his shoulders. The story is weak, and it just didn't seem to fit Cassavetes' typical style. But maybe it is also the absence of Gena Rowlands which hurts so much. :) Anyway, it is far from being a bad film, and maybe I'll give it another go soon, as I can't tolerate 2 stars for a Cassavetes-film. I watched it on a very old VHS, and the sound quality was awful. Probably, hopefully, that was the reason why I didn't get into the film.

Do the Right Thing is an interesting film, and Spike Lee masterfully manages to transmit the film's atmosphere onto the spectator. But unfortunately that's almost all what is good about it. The movie just seems so...unreal, even theatrical at times. Maybe it was the director's intention, but the characters were just getting on my nerves. And it isn't funny when you hear the word "fuck" 3 times a minute. That's OK for a Scorsese-film like Goodfellas, but not for this one.

For Videodrome, it's more difficult to say. I'm pretty unexperienced when it comes to Cronenberg. The only other film I have seen by him is The Fly which I greatly prefer though. Videodrome could have been a biting and evil media satire, but instead it just seems so harmless during most of the time. I just feel that there was much more potential behind it. The film was too short. But this was probably due to the fact that I watched the cut German version (2 or 3 additional minutes wouldn't have saved the film anyway). When I now think about it, I might even pull the rating down to 2 stars. Hmm, I'll have to sleep over such a difficult decision. ;)

You put to words some quite ample arguments there. Good job. I'll be seeing those movies probably very soon but I'm still hoping for best though (You haven't shaken me, mister... ;)) Only the title Videodrome sounds so riveting to me...

PS. I'm not too a supporter of profanities in movies or anywhere for that matter

See them as soon as possible! All three of them are interesting films, of a high artistic quality, which just didn't grow on me.

love to get your thoughts on Crash (Haggis, 2004). i'll share my thoughts after, but i will say i liked it. thx in advance

Of the five "Best Picture"-nominees this year, Crash was the one that interested me the least, and that reveals being the best of the four I have seen so far. It is a masterful example of an effective and affective approach to the explosive theme of racism. Without kitsch or wrong sentimentality, director and writer Paul Haggis tells stories about various people living L.A. who meet each other within 36 hours. Even more enjoyable is the fact that the movie does NOT seem overconstructed, which is given through the excellent screenplay. With Matt Dillon, Ryan Philippe, Tony Danza, Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Terrence Howard, Michael Peña, Brendan Fraser and Thandie Newton, the mindblowing cast could give the wrong impression that this might only be an exhibition of overpaid Hollywood stars outplaying each other in hypocrisy. This is another reason to see this intense drama, because you will be very positively surprised by the honest and unvain performances. Above all, Michael Peña, Don Cheadle, Terrence Howard and Thandie Newton are terrific.Even though the storyline may be at times a little predictable and Haggis sometimes overeggs the pudding, Crash is all in all one of the most revealing and human films about racism of the decade.

"Tony Danza"! I can't believe I missed my chance to see him on the big screen.

You like Tony Danza? Really?

P.S.: I didn't see Crash on the big screen either, "only" on DVD.

I have a morbid fascination with Mr. Danza.

How can someone so untalented in so many art forms keep getting work? Can't dance, can't sing, can't act... even when all of his roles are good-natured loveable Italian-American men named "Tony" from New York.

Is it the different last names that are throwing him off? Could he be the greatest method actor ever with the narrowest range? What is it about his hands? Ever notice his hands? They move very strangely but consistently.

In fact, the entire cast of Taxi fires my imagination. They have to be the cast with the greatest (and broadest) post-project success.

Actually, I only know him from that TV series (I have forgotten the name, sorry).

What character was he playing? Tony DiMeo, Tony Canetti, Tony Micelli, Tony Banta or Tony Danza?

Hahaha, I think it was Tony Micelli. :)

good points. one of my favourite aspects of the film though was the way all of the narratives met and connected, i thought was brilliant. at first i wasn't too sure about the film as it wasn't very subtle about its target or meaning, but that works to its advantage. My favourite and i think the best performance was by Michael Pena. beautiful film

Yes, I agree!

Also i didn't like Sin city, pretty poor, i actually gave up watching it about 20mins in

Hehe, the first 20 minutes were the best part of Sin City. After that, it just keeps drifting off.

'Keeping fingers crossed that you won't get annoyed by the "100 rating" as soon as I was. ;)

Hehe, I change my rating scale like underwear. :D

I dunno, man. "Supervixens" is lesser Meyer, but it's not THAT bad. It's certainly at least more interesting than "The World Spits on Lilya".

Supervixens was my first Meyer-experience, and, while I expected it to be trashy fun, it was downright awful. It's sexist crap in my eyes, nothing else. The only positive aspects I could find were the hilarious showdown and the inventive variety of sexual images.

I suppose I can't really argue with you about the 'sexist' thing (Meyer reportedly used the film to work out a lot of issues involving his then-impending divorce). I agree that it's not one of his better films, but don't give up on him - wait for "Faster, Pussycat!" or "Vixen!"

hey 1922. just thought you may want to know i re-watched taxi driver (gonna every year) and its gone up from a C+ too B. it was deff the most i have enjoyed it. i still found it depressing but i enjoyed the charater of travis more this time. i think for the first 50 mins its very much a good movie, however for me, the iris storyline lets it down. i can see why it was in there, to display the lowest of the low and give value and merit to travis' eventual insanity. However, it seems to me it was strong enough with his pinning for betsy. his lack of social skills and love for betsy seemed enough without the extra subplot. but hey, i'm warming to it !

Ah, excellent! Very good brief analysis, indeed. I'm sure you'll find several other viewings rewarding. :p

Not big on Shaun of the Dead, eh?

Nah, I admit that 58 might be a little tough for the film. It is decent entertainment, but I feel that they could have made much more of it. Still better than the two other zombie-flicks I watched this year!

Dear Sir:

In going through your records, it appears that you have made a bookkeeping error. You have only included the right half of the first number on the rating for "Land of the Dead." Please attend to this grievous error whenever time permits.

Thanks,
The Mgmt.

Haha. :D

I see that you liked it very much, but I really can't see how. I mean, that film is just plain awful. I couldn't recognize much sense behind all these liters of artificial (hopefully!) blood. It felt as if a zombie had made this film...

Nice to observe your rating system 1922 :-) I can draw comparisons to my own now, as I have also changed to the 100 scale this year. I must say, this new rating system allows for the most precision. i was never really satisfied with the ten scale rating I did at first, and also the star ratings, even when broken up into smaller fractions never fully satisfied my needs. Ok, this isn't an advertising campaign, but anway. kudos! :-)))

Haha, thanks! I noticed your change in the ratings scale. Nice. :)

Seeing Vanishing first to Spoorloos wasn't a particulary good idea, eh?

Haha, no, really not. The original is much better than the remake. Seeing the Hollywood-version first spoilt the suspense a little bit. But it's still an absolutely fascinating movie. Have you seen them?

P.S.: You haven't been here in a while... Good to see you back again! :)

I totally forgot about my remark here. Thanks a bunch for the "good to see you back" part. ;)

I've seen only Spoorloos (but don't have the intent at all to see the other one) and I found it very good; I gave it a 5/7, but it's a really really high 5/7.

A "really really high 5/7", you say?

Hehe. The day where you give 7/7 to a film, I'll invite you to some cookies. :)

P.S.: You see? I watched 3 films today! Hah, I'll get you. ;)

We'll see... about that both terms. ;)

So where did the ratings go?

PS. Project off. MSN probably won't happen. Home enjoying summer. Waving and sending greetings in your direction. ;)

Haha, I'm getting too lazy to rate the (few) films I see. I might eventually switch back to a 5-star-rating-scale.

P.S.: :( Why that?

P.S.: :( Why that?
Laziness took me by suprise way heftier I thought it will be. The movie-seeing-part suffered too.

T'is a good list. I can't say I've seen all of these - how many of these did you fall asleep through at some point?

Thanks.

Well, contrary to you, I hardly ever fall asleep to any films, not even to the really bad and boring ones. ;)

18: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Tykwer, 2006)
And how was it? :)

Well, not bad, not bad. At times, it is great, at others, it is just mediocre.

I wonder if they cut the boring part of the book, where Grenouille is stuck in the cave for a few years.

Well, it is much briefer in the film. I don't necessarily think that it is a boring part. Rather I'd say that it is the moment where Grenouille's character (in the book) gains a lot of depth.

woooo you saw the departed!! it was on at my local cinema but i didn't go, how was it ?

It's a very interesting and thrilling film. Certainly not Scorsese's best work (nor the best film of 2006), but it is definitely grand cinema. It's worth it.

Frohe Weihnachten! Nice skeletonheads. ;)

Thanks. And a happy new year! ;)

To you too. ;)

dang, 1 star for saw 2, the Saw series is not liked on listology lol i feel so alone :) haha

Well, at least, I liked the first one.

I enjoyed the first "Saw," as well. It's not masterpiece or anything, but...that's obvious.
