Author Comments:

[month/day] Title (Year Director) rating based on personal enjoyment only

only feature length (40+min.) films that first played in a theatre (in any country) are numbered. All others are TV movies/serials/series, D2DVD, or theatrical shorts/serials

DNF: Did Not Finish (usually only watched the first half/hour)
00-19: waste of time
20-39: not recommended
40-59: mediocre
60-79: recommended
80-100: highly recommended

* = not first viewing (not that that means)

My jaw is on the floor. 14 movies in 4 days! Wow!

Let me know if you would like to join this list.

Yes. Thanks for the offer. :)

The question must be asked: how the heck do you manage to watch over three movies a day? :-)

no life no family no cable :) (actually a :( when i come to think about it)

Ah. Sadly, if I wasn't married and didn't have two crazy puppies to deal with, I'd probably be right there with ya.

I'm glad (and a bit melancholy) to learn that you have puppies in your life.

As am I, 0dysseus. Thank you. :-)

one of the most despicable films i've seen in a very long time

Have time to explain why? :-)

well my hatred has abated a bit...

i hated all the characters; the entire film feels like bad republican made propaganda about how a "common evil liberal new england family lives"...

the script is forced and obvious, the characters are so unrealistic and despicable - i only watch films for the story and characters). The acting is wonderful otoh (which in a way makes the entire ordeal worse).

but... (and it's so very subjective and probably the real reason i hate this film)
how in the name of whatever is Meredith cold or stuck up - i mean the others are hypocritical a******s. she's one of the closest characters that i've seen that i can personally relate to since Whit Stillman's bril Metropolitan.

[i can't write at all sorry]

Hmm, I wasn't planning on seeing this, but after your comments I might just check it out when the DVD is released. I was born in New England and spent many holidays there with my extended family.

Yeah, "State of the Union" is something, isn't it? Not quite sure what it is, but it is something...

Glad you hated Narnia.

heh...i'm not. I really wanted to like this film.

Well, at least you can be sure you haven't lost your good sense, then :-)

You flatter "The Chumscrubber" with your "1." I should have rated it even lower than I did.

Born to Fight goes to 10, eh? Better than Ong-Bak?

I thought so, but most people hate the film. Both are fun mindless entertainment. It's been awhile since I've seen Ong-Bak though.

Well, for me Tony Jaa made the movie (and Tom Yum Goong too) with his charisma and the way to stun me with his brawling-around. Hmmm...'can't think of that it can be as impressive without Jaa.?

I too thought of The Return to be quite soporofic, but also to be very meritable and that multiple viewings will somewhat kick it up.

Narnia a 2 and Disney's version of Snow White a 6. Hoo Nelly.

I'm not sure about Narnia, but I still enjoy Snow White even today, despite its outdated values.

i gave the first half of Narnia a 7...then it becomes a lil too religious for me. shrug. If you liked the books or are Christian you'll probably like it.
A 6 is a good score :) - anything 4 or over is a favourable score.

These movies that you have seen in 2006. Is it the first time you have seen them? or just any movie you have seen this year?

unless it has a [previously...] it's a first time viewing

Another "Let My Puppets Come" survivor. We should have, like, a support group or something.

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl (2005 Robert Rodriquez) DNF - i think it's very sweet he made a film for his child
Daltry Calhoun (2005 Katrina Holden Bronson) 1 - wonderful soundtrack & Sophie Traub is very good

Hehe, great short reviews. :)

His Girl Friday went from a 9 to a 1? That's quite a big jump? Did you have a severe ideological change since you last saw it?

i hadn't seen it since the early '90s. I thought it was hilarious then, but this time it felt like annoying brats screaming for 1 1/2 hrs - shrug. Will probably go back up next decade.

[03/08] Why We Fight (2005 Eugene Jarecki) 10 - should be seen by all Americans

Heh. Your politics are showing a bit. Though from what I hear about it, it shouldn't be a partisan thing.

And thank you for giving Fritz The Cat a 1. That is one of the most overrated pieces of crap ever. Since it's adult animation, people seem to give it a free pass. It's just bad animation with a poor plot despite the controversy it caused and still causes.

It's left leaning neutral.

Fritz the Cat was hilarious until it became silly softcore porn fluff (sadly about 10 minutes into it).

Brittas Empire better than Red Dwarf. I don't know.? :)

Better than seasons 7 & 8 (actually i had never seen season 8 before since the local PBS at the time didn't get the rights and i had heard very negative things about it)

I guess in the last seasons it did had gone a whole lot sloping, but it's still Red Dwarf; Brittas Empire, no matter how good the jokes were, it doesn't have that something. For me at least. ;) I remember that you've put a nice grade for League of Gentlemen a while back. Awesome!

Ut oh, went to the 100 point scale. Be prepared for the backlash. :)

I'm hoping it will mean less 1 stars. It also seems to give more freedom than the 10 point scale i was using.

It totally gives more freedom than the 10 point scale. You don't seem to have that small a range on the 10 point scale though. Nearly every rating I give would be 5-8 on a 10 point scale so I couldn't dream of using it.

I find your small add-on capsules very eloquent and nice, sooooo, don't brush them off every day that swiftly, ok? ;)

Why the super-downgrade of Quick Change? That was one of my favorite movies, but I'll confess it's been quite a while since I've seen it.

i hadn't seen it since it hit vhs (1991?). didn't find it that funny this time (amazingly fast moving film though)

Ouch... The Maltese Falcon takes a hit! What did you think corny about it?

I can't imagine an answer that would satisfy me. If it's because of clichéd characters I'm going to protest. As the culmination of original noire I'd have to say that everything that followed is cliché and, by comparison, corny.

If it's Bogart then something has gone seriously awry.

actually i meant sappy (probably the same thing)

essentially just the final few minutes - the fact that he's in love with her after only a few days and the final line (but i gave it points for being so classic).

it's technically well done (excellent acting, direction, sets, etc.) with wonderful characters, but it's so self censored that it's a shell of what it may have been.

the 9 [90] rating comes at a time when i was trying to be objective and rated films after i watched it (new rating is very highly subjective and rated during the viewing)

I'm not sure that he's in love with her. I think that Spade is sticking the knife in and twisting it. Brigid tries to use their (presumed) physical relationship to manipulate him in the name of "love."

Spade not only doesn't fall for it but he throws it back in her face. If she truly loves him then the most important thing should be how he feels, not the time she will spend in prison. He teases her with the prospect that he will be waiting for her in twenty years when she gets out. If she has been using sex to manipulate him (I say yes) then she realizes that in twenty years she will have lost that ability. The fact that his sleepless nights will pass in a matter of months just highlights the many nights she's going to spend wasting away in a jail cell. He has completely turned the tables on her.

I actually think that this helped to make Bogart a star with audiences of the time. In Casablanca Rick is in a similar position with Ilsa. He even makes a similar accusation of prior sexual relationships/manipulations.

The same character who said, "I don't care who loves who. I'm not going to play the sap for you. I won't walk in Thursby's -- and I don't know how many others -- footsteps." could also have delivered the lines, "Tell me, who was it you left me for? Was it Laszlo, or were there others in between? Or aren't you the kind that tells?"

When Bogart (as Rick) gives up the girl for a noble cause his transformation from escaped convict in High Sierra to shady private eye in The Maltese Falcon to noble stoic (and leading man) is complete. This would not have been lost on audiences at the time. True love demands that Rick gives up Ilsa. The absence of love demands that Spade turn Brigid in to the cops. In both cases Bogart's character lies to the woman. In Ilsa's case it is to soften the emotional blow and in Brigid's case it is just the opposite.

I might be misinterpreting your use of "self censored" but I want to point out that The Maltese Falcon was literally censored. The Hays Code particularly required that "The sanctity of the institution of marriage and the home shall be upheld. Pictures shall not infer that low forms of sex relationship are the accepted or common thing." I think that director Huston did a brilliant job skirting this rule. Although never confirmed (and certainly never shown) Sam Spade is depicted having two (possibly three) affairs including one with his partner's wife. There's no way that audiences of the time could have failed to recognize this.

The first commandment of the Hays Code was that, "No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin." This, along with many other rules and prohibitions, helped to create and shape film noir. I can't think of film that does it better than The Maltese Falcon.

In this day and age where drinking, gun shots, sex, sympathetic villians and the like are common (even anticipated) I can absolutely understand it if The Maltese Falcon didn't meet your expectations.

Thanks for the very detailed reply :)

How did you see The House is Black?

download, it's on DVD too (in the US at least). Netflix never made a tempting rental - very short film and the reviewers there hated it.
