  5. Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo (1966) (aka The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) [08/10] ~ Since this is a really long movie I ended up watching an hour here, a half an hour there, over the course of three or four nights so I didn't get as contiguous a feel for the story as I would have if I'd watched in one marathon sitting. And I haven't watched enough Westerns to know, specifically, why Sergio Leone's epic is considered such a classic of the genre but it sure feels like a classic when you are watching it. Explicitly defining the three main characters as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly within the context of the movie and then turning that on it's head by having each dabble in the forte of the others is an inspired bit of characterization. Eli Wallach's performance alone is reason enough to watch this film. Probably the one issue I had with the film is that the characters seem, basically, oblivious to the Civil War taking place around them so near the end their involvement with in a Civil War battle seemed contrived and inserted just to make a statement about war itself. All in all I thought this movie offered up a credible example of what things were like in the days of the Wild West.

Author Comments:

My ratings system is explained here. Recent additions to this list are highlighted in yellow.

I've been wanting to rewatch Leone's spaghetti westerns for awhile, and your review here might be just the impetus I need. As always, I really enjoy your comments. I was also surprised to hear the movie is so long, as I really don't remember it that way. Sure enough, after I clicked on your link, was brought to The Pink Panther, and then searched for the correct movie ( :-), the re-release clocks in at three hours. I had no idea!

See what happens when I try to add fancy-shmancy extras to my lists! It's fixed now.

Unless I watch the movie theatrically or it's short, i.e. 90 minutes, I've been watching most movies in 2 sittings lately. For whatever reason it's been hard to get two contigious free hours of late.
