- James P. Hogan
- Asimov (his mysteries, mostly)
- Spider Robinson
- Gordon Dickson
- Philip K. Dick (his less weird stuff)
- Clifford Simak
Heinlein (all hail!) was the man who got me into SF, and was my favorite for the longest time. I sat in a restaurant the day after he died, re-reading that story about DD Harriman(?) finally getting to the moon, but dying because of it, and cried. The similarities between Heinlein and Harriman were incredible. I still miss him.
Then along came Hogan, and who is very nearly tied with RAH as my favorite. He helped me figure out what I want to be when I grow up -- a synthesist. (Read the Giant's novels.) He's also very grounded in computer science, so we don't have to deal with fanciful computers that do incredible (impossible?) stuff or -- even worse -- some sort of magic or something.
There are more, of course, but my library is mostly packed away right now (due to a 4 year series of Major Events(tm) in my life) so I'll add more as I think of them.
