Nothing like having The Iron Giant bump off Magnolia to make my evening. :-) Thanks! (even though I know you didn't do it for my benefit)

It's true that it wasn't expressly for your benefit, but I do remember reading that you had a fondness for it.

The Iron Giant is a wonderful movie. Absolutely wonderful. One of the best recent animated films, if not the best.

finally someone who realizes that shawshank redemption was the best movie of '94 not pulp fiction... not by a long shot.

Urgh. Urgh.

The Shawshank Redemption may be one of the most overrated movies of all time. Treakly story, uninspired filmmaking, and average to overbaked performances.

An inspiring story does not equal a good movie.

Sorry, just had to get my resentment of that film out. All better now.

I concur with AAA. Shawshank is very over-rated.

treakly story? what the hell does that mean and are we watching the same movie... it's a great story with imo great direction... being a stephen king fan probably helps... but i'm not insane... i realize outside of this movie darabont sucks... and what you're describing sounds more like the green mile than shawshank redemption.

Um, hey y'all, fascinating discussion and what not, but don't forget that this is a list of my favorite films, not the best ones. At least not best by any scale other than my own personal enjoyment of the film. Quality is a slippery concept anyway.

Oh, and I assume treacly to indicate cloyingly and sickeningly sweet, which in reference to Shawshank is a point about which AAA and I can agree to disagree. As for it being over-rated, that's largely a moot point as regards a list of this nature. Sometimes I like what others like; sometimes I don't. Sometimes I even like treacly; I'm a real sugar fiend. My opinion is only tangentially based on the opinion of others anyway, mostly insofar as it helps me select films about which I might want to have an opinion of my own.

That said, Pulp Fiction currently stands as my second favorite film from that year, narrowly beating out films from the Trois Colours series and Clerks.

I have always said that I am a poor critic; for pete's sake, it says right up top that I'm clearly no connoisseur. I tend to like things and I tend to go easy on things I didn't. Hell, I gave Garfield two stars out of five!

I'm sorry if I came off as mean-spirited. I didn't mean to demean any taste you have. Usually, when I disagree with people on movies, I really don't mean any harm.

I completely understand your points, and I think we can agree to disagree.

Not at all mean-spirited. This is a forum for discussing opinions after all. If we all agreed, what fun would it be? I just thought the direction of the conversation had moved a bit outside of the context of the list, so I opted to throw my two cents in. As I'm sure I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm always good for a bit of dissension.

Still, I appreciate your sentiment.
