You jest, surely.
If it's Orwell - Homager to Catatonia (but notice how we now have CCTV everywhere and nobody seems to care)
If its Steinbeck - The Grapes of Wrath (I defy you not to cry at the end)
And what about - Gatsby, Lolita, Ulysses, The Good Soldier Schweick, Slaughterhouse 5, Cancer ward, Zorba the Greek........something ny Graham Greene (The Heart of the Matter?)....The Tin Drum (Gunther Grass)...hey...notice how I've snuck in a couple of non English-speaking authours? All male so far. So what about The Grass is Singing or The Good Terrorist (Doris Lessing?)
...apologies for the typos above. I can spell, but I cannae type.
I really should have been more specific. These are the best books I've read. I'm not all that old, and these are the ones that have stuck out at me.
Have you read Catch-22? If not, I bet you'd like it!
Also, while it took me a couple books to become a convert, I prefer Terry Pratchett to Douglas Adams. Funnier, more satirical, and a much larger number of books. :-) I'd personally recommend starting with the "Watch" sub-series of the Discworld books (Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, and The Fifth Elephant.
I have not read Catch-22 yet, but its on my short list of books to read. I will add your suggestions by Terry Pratchett to my short list as well.
Thanks for the comments!
Read some Milan Kundera.
Good God, I haven't updated this in years. Since the publication of this list, I actually have read some Milan Kundera. The Unbearable Lightness of Being would certainly make it into my top ten. Maybe I should update.
