Robert Mitchum has always been one of my favorite Actors. I always though him a really cool John Wayne. A tall, laconic product of the Hollywood Studio system, Mitchum is one of those guys women lusted after, but men liked too. He usually disdained his acting skill and the pretentiousness of artisitc film making, but made some great movies that have lasted as artistic milestones.
Mitchum rose to fame with his first oscar nominated role in the 1945 Story of GI Joe. For the next 40 years Mitchum was one of the busier actors in Hollywood. He is also one of the safer bets in Film history. If Robert Mitchum is in the movie the chances are it is at least watchable. Night of the Hunter is a cinematic masterpiece and if you have not seen it, I highly recommend. His Film Noirs from the late 40's; Out of The Past,CrossFire and Pursued were some of that best of that genre. His Max Cady from Cape Fear is one of the scariest roles in film history and right into the seventies Mitchum was making classics like Firends of Eddie Coyle and Farewell My Lovely.
This is my first entry into a collection of lists I plan on doing for some of my favorite actors and actresses. Top Ten is self explanatory. Honorable Mention is my sneaky way to get some other good movies mentioned and Danger List is ones to avoid. As always discussion is encouraged. I am only commenting on Films I have seen

One of my favorite Mitchum movies is a little-known western called BLOOD ON THE MOON which dates from 1948. The opening sequence is very memorable: Mitchum is dozing by his campfire when he hears a deep, rumbling sound that keeps getting louder. Suddenly he springs up and leaps into the lower branches of the nearest tree, just in time to escape the stampeding cattle that wipe away his camp site as if it never existed..
