Author Comments:

...with [Release Date] where applicable. Recent additions are highlighted in yellow. I'm also keeping track of the cheapest prices (including shipping) that I can find for these discs.

In case it might influence your purchasing decisions, the Fight Club DVD is marvelous (although the only other ones I've seen so far are The Matrix and Men in Black). The verbal annotations by Fincher, Pitt, Norton, and Bonham-Carter are very entertaining and informative (the movie is on disc 1 along with 4 (!) annotated versions - then there's a bunch of other stuff on disc 2 that I haven't fully explored yet).

The thing I find remarkable about the various deleted scenes and "making of" features you get on DVD (speaking in general now - not just about Fight Club) is how unbelievable it is that the raw footage ends up looking like the final product. There's lots of magic that happens in editing and post-production that I'd always taken for granted.

Hey, Jim! Yeah, I've heard many good things about The Fight Club DVD. They always have it close to the top of must-have DVD lists. Hopefully comprehensive packages like this are the wave of the future. Thanks for the input!

I'm betting there'll be a "collector's edition" or equivalent of Memento within a year. I'm holding out for that.

Yes, Jim! On many of these I'm hoping there'll be something really special down the road. Fortunately my current rule of thumb is that I'm only allowed to buy DVDs if there total cost (including shipping) is less than $15.

I might make an exception if there was something really super-duper special that I wanted but so far I can't justify paying the high price for normal movies which might even drop in price in the next few years. Plus right now I'm super-duper poor so that helps, too! :-)

Wow! You got all the DVDs on your own 'em list for $15 or less, including shipping?! That's great! Care to share your shopping secrets? Or do you just keep a close eye on eBay?

Well, I usually start with DVD Price Compare and almost always DVD Price Compare leads me to Deep Discount DVD. I don't know remember the prices on all of them but I do know for a fact that the last 7 DVDs I bought (highlighted on my DVD Own List) were all under $15. In fact Take The Money and Run was under $10.

Woo-hoo! And The Usual Suspects: Special Edition the same day! It pays to wait. I just got burned on Groundhog Day. Bought the regular edition 'cause I didn't think it was popular enough to necessarily warrant a special edition. Like a month later the SE was announced. Curses...

I don't know Mr. Show or Samurai Jack. Would you be willing to tell me about 'em?

Mr. Show was a short-lived HBO Comedy Series starring David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, http://www.bobanddavid.com/. Tenacious D was sort of a spin-off from it if not directly at least thematically. I haven't seen but a few episodes but a good friend of mine saw many and said they are all equally hilarious. They show the occasional episode on the HBO Comedy channel. It has a very Kids-In-The-Hall sort of feel to it. But more American.

The guys from Mr. Show made a feature film called Run, Ronnie, Run which premiered at Sundance this year. It's supposed to be in theathers (probably limited release) in April. Quoted from the official site: "This is an epic tale that follows the rise of one Ronnie Dobbs (Cross), a belligerent loudmouth who becomes famous after his multiple arrests on a COPS-style TV show. A nation that comes to love him, later abandons him. Along the way, much like the Mr. Show HBO series, the story spins off to unrelated satire touching on everything from music to politics to sports..."

Samurai Jack currently plays on The Cartoon Network. It's a very stylishly animated show and (from what I can tell) completly dialogue free. Check out the tidbits on the official site I linked above. You've got to see it to believe it. Knowing about your like (love?) of animation I think you'd enjoy it substantially! It's on Cartoon Network Friday at 7pm and repeats at Noon and 9:30pm on Saturday. I think they're up to Episode 16 now.

Do you have cable, Jim?

Cool, thanks for the writeups! Alas, we killed our TV 4.5 year ago (but who's counting?). We were expecting our first baby, and didn't want her exposed to commercials, and it also sucked away all our time, as we lacked the willpower to only watch a little TV.

I understand completely about the TV thing. The great thing is now that they're releasing many TV shows on DVD you can watch the content without the commercials and at your own pace. Check out the Samurai Jack website sometime. If you have a fast connection they have a video clips on there that I found last night as well.

Jim, here's a review of the Samurai Jack DVD if you are interested.

Jim, I noticed that Netflix has the Samurai Jack DVD. You should check it out sometime if you feel so inclined. :-)

Already in the queue and looking forward to it!

A bit of news you might already know, but since I see the first season above...

Yes indeed, HBO has officially announced the DVD release of The Sopranos: The Complete Third Season for August 7th ($SRP 99.98). All 13 episode will be included in the 4-disc box set, in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Extras will include three exclusive audio commentaries delivered individually by writer/actor Michael Imperioli (Episode 9 - The Telltale Moozadell), episode director Steve Buscemi (Episode 11 - Pine Barrens) and series creator David Chase (Episode 12 - Amour Fou), a behind the scenes featurette (a day on the set of The Sopranos), recaps of seasons 1 & 2, episodic synopses, video previews and recaps, cast and crew bios and a web link.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Thanks, L. Yeah, I had already heard about that and added it to my Upcoming DVDs Of Note list earlier. Thanks, though!. I just started watching the 2nd season last night on a tape I got from the library.

I'm not sure I remember this correctly, but I think the last time I checked this list Samurai Jack was the lone "Tier One" entry. What brought about its fall from grace? Or am I not remembering correctly?

It wasn't really a fall from grace. I just thought I would have to buy it to get to see it. And then I found it at the library. Now that I've seen it I don't feel the compelling need to have it. If that makes sense.

I have seen Monsters, Inc. twice now, though. So I don't know exactly why I have it up in Tier One except that it's a great movie and I can imagine many repeat viewings.

If I had my druthers I'd have all of the DVDs that I'm interested in owning ordered by preference. But I'm afraid that my mind changes too much so it's easier just to have two tiers.

My Tier One is sort of my "realistic" wish list. If I had a little extra money this is what I'd buy. Or if my girlfriend wanted to buy me a DVD I'd suggest that one.

This rest of the list is sort of like my "dream" wish list. Everything on here I'd like to have eventually but most of it I'm content to wait on.

Ah, that makes perfect sense. I got to see it through Netflix. I do envy you and kbuxton, whose libraries stock DVDs. 'Round here they don't.

I have the Monsters Inc. DVD and I haven't checked out all the features yet. I did laugh heartily at the short "Mike's New Car" though.

Jim, I'm curious. Does your library stock VHS tapes?

Nope, they leave movies in all forms to the video store. The library just has books (some on tape), music, and periodicals.

Well, even though it's nice to have DVDs and the like, I always though it was odd that the library carried them. I wonder what percentages of libraries natiowide carry VHS and DVD? I'll have to find a reference librarian and ask...

Do you want to own two editions of Amores Perros? Are they complementary?

No, I don't want necessarily want to own two copies of Amores Perros. I just can't figure out which version I want. It seems like each might have features that the other doesn't have. I just put them both there to remind myself that I need to do some research about which one is best. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any decent DVD reviews about either edition. Does anyone here on Listology own a copy of the Amores Perros DVD? If so, let me know.

Rushmore (1998) (Criterion Collection) i got that from import (im in Uk) and it was well worth it. really good menus an extra features a great buy
