Updated March 2007
Limited to 7 per country. Phillippines miss out cos i've not seen the most admired films, like Manila in the Claws of Neon.. I'd love to see top Bulgarian and Romanian films. Many in Spain rate The Executioner as their best.

Maybe I can help with Belgium as it's my country :) top movies from this small country could include Man Bites Dog (C'est arrivé près de chez vous) (1991)/ Le Maître de Musique (1986) / The Lucas Belvaux Trilogy (2003)/ The eighth day (Le huitième jour) (1996) these won awards and/or were noticed by american critics so I'll stick to them and not go back before the 80's when belgian movies were either very "artsy" and deep but not very enjoyable to watch or very stupid comedies relying on jokes relating to the belgian society and therefore not movies that could be easily understood by foreigners... I hope I could help

2 i liked, both about children, are Toto the Hero (Van Dormael) and Ma Vie en Rose (Berliner). It's a pity more films by Chantal Akerman aren't available here.

Yes, Ma Vie en Rose was nice... I didn't like Toto Le Héros but Le Huitième Jour is the movie Jaco Van Dormael directed after making Toto

The Netherlands are bordering the north of Belgium as you most probably know... so I'd like to offer you these dutch movies to consider for inclusion in your list: Turks Fruit (Turkish Delight) late-70's Paul Verhoeven flick starring Rutger Hauer which opened both of them the doors to Hollywood and The Lift (De Lift) from the early-80's impressive low-budget but high-adrenaline horror movie, directed by, if memory serves me well, Dirk Maas.

I've seen Turkish Delight but prefer Soldier of Orange! I enjoyed The Vanishing (Sluizer), The Northerners (Van Warmerdam), and have also seen 2 of the Foreign Film Oscar winners from the Netherlands, Character and Antonia's Line (not yet seen The Assault). One film i'd like to see is Abel the Liftboy. Perhaps, as with Belgium, i should have added a few more to my list but i was concentrating mainly on a wide geographical spread.

I hope I don't bore you... the idea behind this list is great... in my opinion, you could consider these three movies for Australia: Mad Max, Muriel's wedding and Priscilla, queen of the desert.

Ah yes, i've seen them. Others i'd recommend from Oz: Babe, Gallipoli, My Brilliant Career, Walkabout, Celia, Rabbit Proof Fence. Chopper and Strictly Ballroom are popular too and Bad Boy Bubby has a cult following.

Two decent films for Iceland
101 Reykjavík
Noi the Albino

and one for Peru

Thanks for those suggestions; trouble is i've not seen the Icelandic ones (only seen a couple from there), but i will put them on my rental list.

And i'm tending to pick according to the films' official country of origin not setting or filming process, so i'd have Fitzcarraldo as German. Still, it would be interesting to arrange by setting. Trouble is, often the setting isn't where the filming takes place, eg Inn of the Sixth Happiness supposedly in China, actually in Wales, or How Green was my Valley, supposedly in Wales, actually in California, or Doctor Zhivago in Spain etc. So it gets complicated.

According to IMDb Fitzcarraldo is a Peruvian film and Stalker is West German. These might not be the country of origin, if you do that way that could be confusing. Andrei Rublev and Mirror are Soviet Union.

AFGANISTAN: Osama (2003)

Have you seen Moolaadé yet?
