Buddy Believes That...

  • Travel

  • That life is a book, and those who don't travel only read one page. (I heard this quote on Virtual Tourist, and I love it.)
  • That immersing yourself in another culture goes a long way towards gaining a true tolerance and understanding of people.
  • That tourists who want to go somewhere to enjoy another culture's beaches and weather (or anything really), while complaining about how they don't speak English and things aren't like back home, should go to an all-inclusive and remove themselves from the general travelling population. We don't need them giving travellers a bad rep.
  • That museums and galleries are interesting, but not necessarily the best place to experience a culture. Be among the people, do what they do, eat what they eat.
  • That most people can afford to travel who say they can't. They've just prioritized their ipods and widescreen tv's and cars.
  • That experience is more important than stuff.
  • Reading / Stories

  • That just as you are responsible for your body with what you eat, you are responsible for your thought processes with what you read. Trashy, unchallenging literature does not encourage smart thinking.
  • That fiction and non-fiction aren't hard and fast distinctions.
  • That, like eating, variety is the key to a healthy mind.
  • That children's literature can tell us a whole lot about society and the human condition.
  • That the stories people choose to tell say more about the person telling them than the content might suggest (referring to Urban Legends and such).
  • Food and Diet

  • That no one should ever, ever need to go on a diet.
  • That eating to gain or lose weight is missing the point.
  • That truly loving food and learning about it will naturally lead to healthier eating.
  • That paying attention to your food - every last bite of it - will help with portion control.
  • That your brain and body need carbs to function. Dr. Atkins was a very dangerous fool.
  • That creating a diet (lifetime diet, that is) around as much variety as possible is much more interesting, rewarding and healthy than any other scheme. This means a variety of foods within each food group, as well as a huge variety of national cuisines.
  • That being healthy is incredibly simple, but not necessarily easy.
  • Exercise

  • That exercise can come in any form, and the point is to just move your body regularly.
  • That people who don't exercise lack body awareness.
  • That people who don't like exercise simply haven't found a style that's fun for them.
  • That for serious exercisers, there's no reason to save anything for later. 100% effort, 100% of the time, or you're settling for less than your best.
  • That most people have no idea what their limit is, because they've never really tested it.
  • That you can probably get more out of the time you spend at the gym if you spent less time standing around.
  • That it's your body. Use it or lose it.
  • Misc.

  • That if you're having a discussion (or argument) with someone, it's best to try to understand where they're coming from. At the very least, it will help you argue better, and at its best will give you empathy and a broader mind.
  • That a conversation/discussion/argument should not be used to prove how smart you are. If you're not learning something, then you're not paying enough attention.
  • That love is worth the risk of getting hurt. That it's worth the risk of getting hurt more than once, twice, 3 times.
  • That if it's the love that's hurting you and keeping you from being you, than it's not really love, and you should leave. Now.
  • That pain is not something to shrink from or hide from. It's a part of life and helps you know you're really alive.
  • Corollary to the pain thing (above): that painkillers are extremely useful and necessary in certain cases, but that for most cases in which painkillers are popped, it's probably better to listen to your body than to shut it up and carry on with what you were doing. Headache? Slow down and relax. Foot hurting? Stop running on it for a while. Feeling flu-ey and achy? For god's sake go home and rest!
  • That if you need chemical substances to feel pleasure, than you're obviously just not self-aware enough.
  • That it's your brain. Use it or lose it.
  • That arrogance is not confidence. That confidence is beauty.
Author Comments:

A few Listologists have lists like this, but I'm a lazy git who isn't going to search for who all has them to give them due credit. Thanks to all of you, whoever you are, and thanks especially to whoever first came up with this.

I bet you're fun to be around :).

Er... I can't tell if you're being sarcastic.

Sincere!!

Oh, okay. Thanks! I like to think so! :P

No worries.

Love hurts, but it is the only way to life a full life...and (to paraphrase your first point) those who don't love live only 2 pages..(er...!)

And as for arguments, I believe, you can never win an argument 'coz as a wise man once said, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still."

Great list btw

I like that quote. It reminds me of a Paul Simon (Simon and Garfunkel) quote: "Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."

And I think you're right about love. The Barenaked Ladies said (on their recent album), "you can never love another until you love yourself - (well brother, I'm in love with everyone I see)". I think if you're the type to live life with passion, then you're probably the type to travel, and the type to fall in love.
