Author Comments:

I learned how to read at 3 years old. As a child I loved reading but as I got older it started to feel more like something I had to do and became less something that I wanted to do. I began avoided books as much as I could and somehow managed to coast by through school and college without doing much reading.

A few years ago I decided to try reading one of the books from Oprah's Book Club. The book was The House of Sand and Fog. Looking back that's not one of my favourite books, however if it weren't for Oprah and her enthusiasm for reading I probably wouldn't have begun reading for pleasure again and would have missed out on what I think are some of the greatest books ever written.

This list is all the books I've read since I rediscovered books as an adult. Some are fantastic, some are fairly average but I always finish every book I start. I think I gained something from reading all of them.

Oprah has slowed down a lot on her recommendations lately and I'm always looking for suggestions from other readers.

Oprah also starred in the film version of 'The Color Purple'.

I can recommend very highly:
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton (also a favourite film of mine)
Rosshalde by Hermann Hesse

Don't take my word - read the reviews.

Since Professor mentioned "The Color Purple," I recommend it for reading as well as watching. The story is told completely in the form of letters written by the main character. Excellent execution; you totally get the story line. Another Pulitzer prize winner (1983).
