These are books I started at some point and just put down before finishing because I couldn't bring myself to continue.

The only one of these I've read is the Silmarillion. I read it quite a while ago. I did find it a heavy read as well, but the history it offered about Tolkien's world sucked me in and helped me get through it.
I think I only managed to get about 10 pages in before I gave up. It's been awhile tough.
I started a similar list a while back. I advise thinking back to your assigned reading in college for more entries.
I didn't take a single English class in college so there weren't many then. I'm sure I didn't read all of all of my textbooks but they're not quite in the spirit of this list.
High school on the other hand ;)
War and Peace? Welcome in the club! I have already tried it twice, and really I don't manage to get through it.
How far did you come?
I don't exactly remember but probably not more than about 20 pages in.
Yup. The first time I read around 5 or 6 pages, and at the second attempt not much more. I was confused by all the names and characters in the book.
