Authors I'm Interested in Trying

  • Joyce Carol Oates (in particular, her book "Beasts") - Tried, couldn't get very far in several of her books because of an "artsy" writing style I'm not really used to. She seems to like to use run-on sentences and doesn't use punctuation as much as I'd like for her to.

Sorry for the short list. I just started it but it will continue to grow. If you've read any of these authors feel free to share your opinion. Thanks!

Start with a short story collection to get an idea of her writing style. Oates is a tremendously satisfying read because she's very willing to write fiction using varied writing styles she admires, especially early 20th century fiction.

I've glanced at the titles and synopsis of some of her other books and she does seem rather prolific. The titles alone are enough to catch my curiosity. I've now got a list of about five books by her that I'd like to read. My best friend is "scouting" her out right now and is almost finished with Rape: A Love Story. She says she enjoys Oates' writing so whenever I'm finished with the Mozart biography I'm going to test her out myself!

Here are some authors you should really try:
- John Steinbeck (Of Mice and Men, East of Eden)
- Paul Auster (Moon Palace)
- Ephraim Kishon
- Albert Camus (The Outsider, The Fall)
- Max Frisch (Andorra, Biedermann...)
- Franz Kafka
