Author Comments:

THANKS VERY, VERY MUCH FOR YOUR COOPERATION AND CONSTANT INTEREST!

List compiled from 11/04/05 till 04/04/06 = 5 months of work by 23 people

'1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' is a great book. No doubt about that. Yet, I'm pretty sure each of you misses at least one good film that is not in there.

Therefore I now really need your help to put a list of 1001 alternative movies...

Please report any errors or mistakes (especially movies that are already in one of the published '1001 movies'-editions).

This list is due to the co-work of these 23 people:
Conall, ThereThere, ogamiitto, pianoshootis, Oedipus, stennie, russa03, WB, baker, grandpa_chum, umbra, CaptMal, cosmovern, grantica, JayBamBaLam, Wezzo, ephender, RosieCotton, jeff_v, Cosgrove, kaplan, Imposter, 1922

Conall's list may be very helpful.

Thanks to ogamiitto for the list of the additions in the most recent edition:

Hero (2002; Yimou Zhang)
The Two Towers (2002; Peter Jackson)
Oldboy (2003; Chan-Wook Park)
Good Bye Lenin (2003;Wolfgang Becker)
The Return Of The King (2003; Peter Jackson)
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004; Michael Moore)
The Passion Of The Christ (2004; Mel Gibson)
Collateral (2004; Michael Mann)
The Aviator (2004; Martin Scorsese)
Million Dollar Baby (2004; Clint Eastwood)

N.B.: If a new addition to the original list corresponds to a movie on this list, it will be removed.

Great idea. It'll take a while to get to 1001, anyway here are a couple of suggestions:
Stromboli (Rossellini, 1950)
Un Coeur en Hiver (Sautet, 1992)
Les Nuits de la Pleine Lune (Rohmer, 1984)
Dead Ringers (Cronenberg, 1988)
Key Largo (Huston, 1948)
Punch-Drunk Love (Anderson, 2002)

The Kid (Chaplin, 1921)
Rififi (Dassin, 1955)
Malcolm (Tass, 1986)
Baraka (Fricke, 1992)
Falling Down (Schumacher, 1993)
The Station Agent (McCarthy, 2003)

Another suggestion:

Bowling For Columbine (Moore, 2002)

Ten suggestions

The Avenging Conscience 1914; D.W. Griffith
The Man Who Laughs 1928; Paul Leni
The Tales Of Hoffman 1951; Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger
Park Row 1952; Sam Fuller
The Criminal Life Of Archibald De La Cruz 1955; Luis Bunuel
Would You Kill A Child? 1976; Narciso Ibanez Serrador
The Stuntman 1980; Richard Rush
Careful 1992; Guy Maddin
Crimson Pig 1992; Hayao Miyazaki
Lost In Translation 2003; Sofia Coppola

I'll try not to use more than my fair share of suggestions. I think these were all omitted.

Life of an American Fireman (1906, Porter)
Unknown (1927, Browning)
Cat's Paw (1934, Taylor)
Drunken Angel (1948, Kurosawa)
Forbidden Games (1952, Clement)
Les Carabiniers (1963, Godard)
Fox and His Friends (1975, Fassbinder)
Testament (1983, Littman)
End of Evangelion (1997, Anno)
Warm Water Under a Red Bridge (2002

Thanks. I think you can suggest more if you want to, because if everybody suggests 'only' 10 movies, I'll need 100 contributions (which will be rather difficult).

I have not put up 'Unknown', 'Forbidden Games' and 'Fox and his Friends' as these are already in the book.

I meant to ask earlier, are you working from the latest edition of the book? Because there's been a recent updated one published that now contains films like Oldboy, The Aviator, Passion Of The Christ etc.

Actually I wanted to consider all of the different editions. (I own the one with Janet Leigh on the cover.)

Would you like me to put up a list of the new films in the third edition?

That would be great, if it isn't too much work for you.

No, not at all. From what I can see the new films are just in the years 2002 - 2004

Hero (2002; Yimou Zhang)
The Two Towers (2002; Peter Jackson)
Oldboy (2003; Chan-Wook Park)
Good Bye Lenin (2003;Wolfgang Becker)
The Return Of The King (2003; Peter Jackson)
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004; Michael Moore)
The Passion Of The Christ (2004; Mel Gibson)
Collateral (2004; Michael Mann)
The Aviator (2004; Martin Scorsese)
Million Dollar Baby (2004; Clint Eastwood)

I'll have a double check to make sure I haven't overlooked anything when I have a bit more time. Think I've got them all though. I'll add some more suggestions for your alternative list later as well.

Thank you very much. That's definetly helpful.

No problem. Some more suggestions

A Woman Of Paris 1923; Charles Chaplin
The Shop Around The Corner 1940; Ernst Lubitsch
Curse Of The Cat People 1944; Robert Wise, Gunther Von Fritsch
Green For Danger 1946; Sidney Gilliat
The Queen Of Spades 1948; Thorold Dickinson

Jigoku 1960; Nonuo Nakagawa
Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders 1970; Jaromil Jires
Punishment Park 1971; Peter Watkins
A Scene at the Sea 1991; Takeshi Kitano

Well here's more then. If Unknown etc were in the book, I guess I'm looking at the wrong list. Some of these might be duplicates as well.

Quite a few of those are in the book. Here's a list of all the films that appeared in the first two editions of the book.

I've put up your link into the 'author's comments'. Thanks.

Also "Life of an American Fireman" should be 1903 not 1906. My mistake.

168. Young Frankenstein (Serious, 1988) - this movie should be Young Einstein. Young Frankenstein was directed by Mel Brooks in 1974.

Also, 24 Hour Party (Winterbottom, 2002) should be 24 Hour Party People
.

Thank you for the correction too.

Dang, a typo. The funny thing is that I have seen Young Einstein, but (unfortunately) not (yet) Young Frankenstein.

Thanks for correcting me.

Very original choices. Thanks, and welcome onboard. :)

I have found no 'Springtime in a Small Town' from 1948. Sure that the year is correct? The only movie I found with such a title is this one.

Springtime In A Small Town is a remake of 1948 film called Spring In A Small Town.

Should also have mentioned that Spring In A Small Town is actually in the original 1001 book. Sorry, mind is all over the place today. Also meant to ask are Short Film About Killing and Short Film About Love valid? They're both part of The Dekalog which is also in the original book... feel like I'm being very picky.

OK, I see the point. I have taken out the two Decalogue-parts, as this'd make it too easy... :)

Ok, if the 1948 version (which I meant - sorry for the wrong title) is already listed in the book, you can add the 2002 remake, which is imo maybe superior to the original.

I'm having a slight problem as to who should be listed as director for 11'09''01 - September 11 (2002).
It seems rather ridiculous listing all 11 directors on here, so perhaps it could be shortened by listing it as "various" or "various directors"? I'm not sure...

Thx. "various" is indeed a good solution for 'September 11'.

Mary Poppins (Stevenson, 1964)

The Four Troublesome Heads (Méliès, 1898)

I'm not familiar with the original list, so some of my alternatives may have already made the first list. Some of them may be guilty pleasures (particularly the comedies) so feel free to pick and choose which ones you add to your list.

First of all, thanks for your contribution.

Why shouldn't I add the Italo-westerns? As a subgenre the spaghetti-western deserves its place in film history.

The only movie I have not put up there is Spielberg's Duel, as it is a TV movie and the original list doesn't include (as far as I know) any TV movies. If I'm wrong, than I'll certainly put up Duel.

Tough call. Duel was made for the ABC network and ran as a movie of the week in America, but it earned a theatrical run (in a slightly longer form) in Europe...

Since, I believe, it is that longer version that is on DVD, I reckon that cut is officially a theatrical movie, but I'll let you make that call. :)

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Ha, thanks for making me aware of that. I have added Duel to the list.

Oh, and if you have some suggestions than you are welcome, as we (at the moment) still need 543 movies...!

I only meant that my opinion that they are must see's might not be credible, but as I now notice you are not turning down qualifying suggestions there is no argument here.

As for duel, I'm not sure it makes any difference(because it was made for tv, no doubt about it) but it did have a US theatrical release in the 80's(after spielberg got big). As this is an alternative list I would include it simply because it did have a theatrical release, which technically makes it a movie and different from just a long television show... but that is completely up to you.

Well, I think Duel is valid. Thank you.

Vetting: these were already on the list: Spring in a Small Town (1948), Daisies (1966), Tampopo (1985).

Still feel free to add more, as every contribution is welcome to reach the aim.

And welcome on Listology.

Good to see how well this is going. A couple more suggestions:

Shrek (Adamson, Jenson, 2001)

A View to a Kill? Really?

Wow. That really seems like the odd man out on your list...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Yes! A View to Kill is one of my guilty pleasures, and IMO the best 007-film starring Roger Moore (maybe among the top 5 of 007-adventures, after From Russia with Love, which is #1, and Goldfinger). I liked both, Christopher Walken as Max Zorin and Grace Jones as Mayday. The last really good James Bond-film.

P.S.: This may shock you even more: I think that Roger Moore was the best James Bond, even better than Sean Connery or Pierce Brosnan. But lets forget about Lazenby, or Timothy Dalton (the latter being a */#@*x#*&*@#*).

Your love of A View to a Kill shocks me a bit, but not your choice of Moore as the man. I'm meeting, er, more and more people nowadays who favor him.

Me, I'm a Dalton man, but I seem to be the only one! : )

I do really enjoy the supporting cast in that film, especially Walken and Jones.

And I agree about From Russia with Love, although you know that you and I are in the slight minority on that one (most of the supreme love flowing Goldfinger's way...)!

Lazenby was fine, but his tenure was all too brief. His film was one of the better ones to these eyes.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Agree on Lazenby. Maybe he should have done one more film. Maybe.

For the popularity of the actors, I'd say that it generally goes like that:
Sean Connery
Pierce Brosnan
Roger Moore
Timothy Dalton
George Lazenby

It will be pretty difficult for Daniel Craig as Brosnan's successor.

Good to hear that for From Russia with Love, I'm not alone. I love Rosa Klebb with her cool shoe. :-)

As for Dalton, you ARE alone. :)

My guess at popularity would run:

Sean Connery
Roger Moore
Pierce Brosnan
George Lazenby
Timothy Dalton

...but I am not the best at measuring these matters... Younger folks tend to skew toward Moore, but older people tend to swear by Connery.

Crazy people dig Dalton. Yup, that's me! : )

I am very curious to see the new Bond. If Naomi Watts accepts the lead female role (as the rumors are now running) and the film really does hold true to the first novel (which is great), the film might be one of the very best. I remain a little skeptical, but oh, I hope...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

OK, at least we agree on Connery being the most popular Bond-actor.

After having seen her in King Kong and Mulholland Dr., I begin to like Naomi Watts, and think she'd be a great Bond-girl.

P.S.: Munich-release for Luxembourg: January 27. YES!!!

Despite any lesser films she may have starred in, Naomi Watts has certainly earned her day in the sun. She is a terrific actress. She certainly would be a nice step up from many recent 'actresses' in Bond movies.

I'm very glad you will get to see Munich soon!

Shalom, y'all!

I dropped off some films that are already on the original list.
