Academy Awards 2009- Predictions

Tags:
  • Best Motion Picture of the Year
  • Slumdog Millionaire
  • Ok, this is a sure bet, unless the Academy has a similar surprise as 2005´s ´Brokeback Mountain´-snub on its hand.
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
  • Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)
  • This is perhaps the most interesting major category of the ceremony. Sean Penn is a very closer runner-up, but I am nevertheless going for Rourke, perhaps also because of a personal preference.
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
  • Kate Winslet (The Reader)
  • Ok, I´m going with Kate Winslet and the long overdue-theory here, but I am nevertheless hoping for Meryl´s third (hugely-deserved) Oscar. And after almost three decades since her last win, this is equally overdue.
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
  • Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)
  • There is no doubt here. And any other name than Ledger´s in the winner´s envelope would be the most scandalous snub in history. Period.
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
  • Penélope Cruz, (Vicky Cristina Barcelona)
  • OK, I liked Viola Davis and especially Amy Adams in ´Doubt´, a film much underrepresented on here. Nevertheless I hugely favour Penélope Cruz. First, because her performance in Allen´s most recent masterwork was astounding. And second, because I simply love her acting.
  • Best Achievement in Directing
  • Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)
  • Although I really liked the film, I am not particularly rooting for anyone here. Danny Boyle did a good job. But David Fincher would be alright as well. Not so much because of this particular work for ´Benjamin Button´, but rather for his whole, so far overseen and underestimated body of work.
