Not forgetting Zatoichi, Ring, Battle Royale, Sonatine, Ballad of Narayama, An Actor's Revenge, Firs on the Plain, Ikiru, Yojimbo...
O.K, my list isn't very balanced, misses out some fine/ famous directors and films altogether (mainly through ignorance) and won't appeal much to fans of manga, animé and modern gross-out splatter; but i hope it'll encourage some exploration, esp-ecially of older masterpieces.
