Author Comments:

This is a ranking of all music albums released in the year 2006 that I've heard.

A work in progress.

You need to stop listening to so much Euro-trash

But the Euro-trash is so good!

Any plans on branching out into metalcore or post hardcore? I don't recognize more than four of the bands but it's good there's someone reviewing metal releases on here now!

There's always a possibility, but I'm not much of a fan of metalcore or hardcore.

Picked up Terrorizer magazine and they have a CD sampler that comes with it. Heard "Wound Upon Wound" off the Gorgoroth record and was pretty blown away. Is the rest of the record in that vein or is there more variety to the sound? I heard it's like 8 songs and around 30 minutes. Pretty short songs for a black metal record but I like that. Also, have you heard the new Celtic Frost?

Ah, haven't noticed this comment until now. Yeah, the Gorgoroth album is mostly in that vein and runs just over 30 minutes (31:35). One song, "White Seed" is a little too, I guess, atonal; I just don't care for it. But pretty good album. The new Celtic Frost I have not heard. I don't think I ever cared too much for their earlier stuff, but I'll probably check it out anyway if I come across it.

Got a couple you might wanna look for:

Striborg (one man black metal a la Leviathan, but this dude lives in a shack in the Tasmanian rain forest. Tasmanian rain forest black metal, really bizarre mix of weird ambient synth stuff and the whole horde of bees guitar sound and inhuman vocals).

Nachtmystium (black metal from Wheaton, IL on a label called Battle Kommand. They have a new record out called Instinct=Decay that's pretty good).

I'll be on the lookout for these, especially the Striborg, which sounds interesting. I have a couple early Nachtmystium demos. I'm listening to the "Unholy Terrorist Cult" demo now to recall what it's like, and it's not bad considering it sounds like they recorded it in a garage (and probably did).

Another suggestion on the black metal front, the new one by Heresi. Only 5 songs, but damn it's good. Disappointed to see you rank Vreid so low, since I was thinking of getting that one. I recently heard a couple songs and was considering getting it on the strength of those. I guess I kind of like the whole black metal mixed with rock sound, most likely cause it's something I haven't heard much of outside of recent Satyricon.

I'll be sure to check out Heresi if I come across it. I find one-man black metal projects are usually good. I guess it's due to their being no other personalities to get in the way of the intended vision.

If you like the couple songs you've heard from Vreid, I'd get it. It's not really my kind of thing, and not what I was expecting considering it developed out of the ashes of the great Windir. I prefer my black metal with folk rather than rock it seems.

The End records is having a big Halloween sale and a couple Windir records are available for around $10. Between Likferd and Soknardalr can you recommend one?

It's a toss-up; I think both albums are great and you can't go wrong with either. Soknardalr is more melodic and consistent. Likferd has a more polished sound and production and incorporates dashes of tasteful electronic and progressive elements.

Wow, you hated the Striborg pretty hard. I like it much more than the Xasthur record which had a couple amazing songs and a bunch of stuff that just did absolutely nothing for me. The wildly different subjective reactions that black metal fans seem to have for certain records is really interesting to me cause I also like the Antaeus record a lot and couldn't get into Summoning (admittedly not really a black metal record at all) yet we have some common ground in stuff like I and Agalloch.

It's funny that when I've made recommendations to you in the past about things, you've not liked them. I can usually peg my friends indie rock and punk tastes and recommend stuff I know they'll like. With metal, it's like a roll of the dice even when it's people with whom I seem to have somewhat similar tastes. Sorry if I steered you toward some stuff you hated, man.

The production/atmosphere and vocals is what ruined Striborg for me. What I like about Xasthur is how the vocals meld with everything else, creating a kind of misanthropic/suicidal atmosphere. Striborg sounds flat and the vocals stand out too much from the rest, which, to me, makes it sound silly. If you like the Isle de Morts material (tracks 6-16), you might want to check out some of the USBM bands like Krieg and Kult ov Azazel. The first thing I thought upon hearing track 8, "Descending from the Blackened Sky", was how much it sounded like Krieg (or perhaps I should say, how much Krieg sounds like this since Isle de Morts predates Krieg). But I may be completely wrong and you might hate Krieg.

No worries though, I saw the Striborg on Usenet and remembered you recommended it, so I downloaded it (along with Spektr, which turned out to be quite good).

I noticed you got the new Summoning and was wondering what you thought of it. I can't get enough of Summoning. Oath Bound took me a while to get into, but Stronghold and Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame I seem to listen to on a daily basis.
