Magnolia the best movie of the year with Being John Malkovich. American Beauty is 19 and it was on your over rated list.
I have not gotten to see Magnolia yet. Yes, American Beauty was on my overrated list because it was by no means the best of the year. It was not the worst film, it wasn't bad at all. It just was not as good as everyone made it out to be. I am looking forward to watching these 1999 movies: Magnolia, The Insider, Tumbleweeds, Sweet and Lowdown, Boys Don't cry, and All About My Mother.
Now this looks like a list I can jive with. You do like Blair Witch and Election a bit more than I do, and I shamefully still need to see Cookie's Fortune, but I believe this list is much closer to my taste than most lists I have seen for this year.
So when you start writing for Entertainment Weekly, let me know so I can subscribe!

Blair Watch is about to get bumped off if I see another movie I like. To tell the truth, I thought it was good, but it seemed more like a protoype of a film style, not the definition.
Election is another case entirely. I gotta tell ya, this was great. I thought that Reese Witherspoon was excellent, and the writing was smart and funny. And of course, as I like 'em, this one shyed away from the light and went dark.
Cookie's Fortune is worth rental. As an ensemble piece it works well, but as a compelling story, well, I've seen better.
Also, if you have not seen any others, I highly recommend them, they're all worthwhile.

PS: Thanks for the praise! Its always welcome and never overdone. :)
Mr. Bangs, before I forget again, do you have any interest in publishing your own Best of 1999 list?
Just curious.
Hmmm, let's give it a few days and see what I can come up with...

I agree with you for the most part. you have very good taste...but i think you should watch magnolia again....
Nah, he got it right the first time.
PT Anderson is very talented, but he is even more over-rated than talented. Still, I have some hope he'll improve until he is at least as good as he believes himself to be...
